Weird that Thurston said nobody wanted to sound like Evol or Sister, because those were definitely their most influential albums in the long run.

Sister and Evol are also my favorite albums by them. I think influence like that is not always noticed. For example The Velvet Underground & Nico also proved to be incredibly influentual in the long run into the cult status album it currently is. When the album came out however, reception was incredibly poor for years on end. I think the album sold 40.000 copies when it finally came out, with current artists saying that everyone who bought that album started a band later. I think it was the same for Sister and Evol. I guess you could say the influence was very much delayed, or slow to pick up and in a very specific small group. I can understand that a band might conclude that no one wants to sound like them if that is the case.

When I was 12 I really started to fall in love with music and discovering new stuff. I lived in a really small, rural town in southern Ontario and didn't have any sort of access to a real record store or any places to get albums. On a family trip to Toronto, I have saved up some money and my Dad took me into Sam the Record Man. I bought the Head on the Door by the Cure, Lumpy Gravy by Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground and Nico, and Goo by Sonic Youth. I didn't really know what I was buying at the time but I feel so lucky that I was able to. Those albums really changed the way I looked at what rock music was could be.

Skaterbun Nah it sucked pre-Internet. I remember having to sit next to my radio with my hand bending the antenna so I could tune in to college radio. These days kids have SoundCloud, KZbin, Spotify. Anything they could possibly want to hear at their fingertips. And if they are lazy they can just stream everything that Fantano loves and get a instant crash course in any genre imaginable.
@STONESGAM
@STONESGAM 5 жыл бұрын
True. Being a music buff back in the day meant a lot more when you actually had to watch shows like 120 minutes, alternative nation, or Headbangers Ball and then take a chance with your own money on buying a new bands cd based on 1 or 2 songs. You actually had to do some research to find cool, indie buzz bands. Now you can just click on spotify. It's not the same. I really miss those days..even going to the record store and buying a new album was an adventure. I don't miss having to spend all of that money on cd's though...that would usually end of skipping at some point. I almost feel like bands don't put as much effort into making epic albums anymore because of the way most people consume music.

I was then and still am into 70’s music of a few genres. Believe it or not, a lot of kids are listening to 90’s music now. Amazing band but the distribution deals in the early days was hard to get tapes of early Sonic Youth from the 80s.. this is why my garage days one of my buddies and i did a TOTALLY Fucked Song ourselves. But Sonic Youth also did not tour often where the younger fans of the scene were waiting to consume them we did not have alot of sonic youth cassettes floating around. The radio was being flooded with classic rock and hair bands. Definitely generational i wish we herd more in Providence RI..

@@mwhite6522 don't want to say it but you have a very solid point. And I don't hate on Thurston just don't understand, I mean its Kim Gordon 🙏 But I don't much appreciate the cheatin, who does right? How about this..Thurston: hey Kim I'm sorry but I met somebody else and I really want to be with her, and give it a go with her. But we sure did have a great run me and you.( Said before he indulges in carnal pleasure) Kim: you fucking suck Thurston, you weren't supposed to take our cover 'I want to be your dog" so literally but I'm down with it if you are to at least try to keep the 'noise' going...meh in a perfect world. From what I've read about Kim's feelings Thurston's approach would not have mattered

@jasonpeters9716 they are not nirvana. That's right, there is no better. You aren't arguing something I don't understand. But nirvana is not a musical representation of the human spirit. Nirvana is a different entity. It's a Rockstars dream, a product of suburbia. Sonic youth is a MAJOR reason nirvana existed. Nirvana are a dropped tuned rock band. A former credence cover project. Sonic youth used so many Alternate tunings It's mind blowing. Kurt played backwards, as he was a right, and that is amazing... but it's not alternate tunings aligned with the true human spirit.

@@JokersNtheOddball I think Pixies are more of a reason for Nirvana & middle/upper middle class suburban kids tastes? Are how bands get huge/popular. Fr mid 1960s-late 90s (Maybe not anymore. Cuz 97% music has sucked for last +25yrs.) *SY esthetics imo were more of an influence on Nirvana than actual Music. I think Pixies have more of an influence over Nirvana music
