New SF2000 - SNES - Retro Nostalgia - Unboxing & First Impressions

Finally got my SF2000! Very very impressed by this unit, for it's price. The D-pad is very decent, like that of a standard ANBERNIC D-Pad (RG353P). The handheld has a bit of weight, hard shell doesn't feel cheap by any means. The display is quite clear and vibrant, like high resolution. What stands out the most with this unit is the XYBA and start/select buttons which are just as large as that of an actual SNES joypad and I like that! I had no issues with the XYBA buttons getting stuck in the face of the handheld, though the buttons are quite low compared to those of the RG353P. All the buttons of the SF2000 look well and work well! Battery life remained at full after playing for an hour or so, so battery life is on point. The A/V out port is not a standard sized headphone jack port it's the mini headphone jack port. Adding roms is fairly simple. When you connect it's micro sd to a PC you will notice a folder among other folders named ROMS. You just add your own roms in that folder, all consoles go into that one folder. The remaining folders like the MD, SF, FC, GBA folders that are already on the micro sd you cannot add roms to those. They won't show up if you do add roms to them. I also noticed this unit comes with the majority of the roms library preinstalled so it comes with a great deal of roms. The roms that come with the unit on the micro sd have a "z" in the extensions. For an example the .gb rom extension is .zgb . Most games work on the SF2000. Some SNES and GBA games don't load or when they do load there is mad glitches. These are the SNES games that are more complicated to emulate like F-Zero, Top Gear 3000, Top Gear 2, Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island. Hardcore Pool, Killer 3D Pool and Multicarts don't run or don't run well with GBA emulator on the SF2000. The games that didn't run at all or don't run well on the SF2000 is what I pretty much expected before purchasing the unit so no issue for me. All NES, GB, GBC and GENESIS games seem to work very well on the SF2000! The main games I wanted the SF2000 for, work with no issues! Those casual games being Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend (GENESIS), Scrabble (Game Boy Color), Wheel Of Fortune (GENESIS, NES, SNES, Game Boy Color) and Wheel Of Fortune Deluxe (SNES). It is a big win that Minnesota Fat: Pool Legend (GENESIS) works well on this unit because I have ran into countless issues with many cheap emulation devices not running this game properly. Either no music, music and game lag or the game just wouldn't load at all. The music is missing a few piano key notes when running it on the SF2000 but the music is playing at normal speed sounding like a more simplistic revised version of the actual soundtrack! The music sounds pretty good on the single speaker system of the SF2000 and it's quite loud enough. Other things I like about this SF2000. It comes with a micro A/V cable for hook up to TV and also a USB type C charge cable. I also like the fact that the unit has a battery compartment door and I plan to search online for an even higher compacity lithium battery to install in my SF2000 console. The save/load game function on this unit works very well (Press Start + Select during gameplay to bring up the Save / Load and quit menu options). The micro sd card is kind of sunken in the slot so I have to use a small flat head screwdriver to tap down on the micro sd card to eject and inject it. Would have been nice if the console came with a hard carrying case but I'll just have to go online and search for one. I wish the SF2000 had a normal headphone jack but it has the mini instead. I suppose you can get an adaptor. Overall, I'm very glad I purchased this SF2000 handheld console from Aliexpress for $24! I got this SF2000 as sort of a backup or extra mini handheld to my ANBERNIC RG300X which is about an inch shorter in length than the SF2000. Both handhelds have the same display size and are the same height. The SF2000 is thicker by about 1/4 of an inch due to it's protruding battery compartment. Based on the measurements of my SF2000 handheld console, I believe I may have found the best fitting hard carrying case for it on Amazon! I just ordered the violet one to match the AB buttons of the handheld (it comes available in many colors). The brand is iMangoo. I went to Amazon and found the hard case with the following item description: iMangoo Shockproof Carrying Case Hard Protective EVA Case Impact Resistant Travel 12000mAh Bank Pouch Bag USB Cable Organizer Earbuds Sleeve Pocket Accessory Smooth Coating Zipper Wallet *The type of rechargeable battery the SF2000 uses is the 18650 3.7V Li-ion (one end is flat, the other end has a tip) By default, the SF2000 comes with an "HC" brand 15000mAh 18650 3.7V Li-ion battery. Amazon and other places have this battery type in higher capacities up to around 30000mAh. *The SF2000 by default comes with an off-brand generic 16GB micro sd card. Before purchasing my SF2000, I purchased a 32GB Sandisk micro sd card from Amazon for about $10. I used Mini Tool Partition Software to copy the original 16GB micro sd card to my 32GB Sandisk micro sd card. This copies over all the folders, bios and other files over to the new card. Then I just simply placed the new sd card into the SF2000 unit and it works with no issues! I took the original micro sd card, placed it into a Samsung micro to standard sd card adapter, then wrote "SF2000" on the outside of the adapter. Afterwards, I just placed it in storage in case I may need it later. After running my SF2000 for a few hours, I've come to the assumption that this handheld is primarily a Mega Drive / Game Boy Color / Game Boy / NES retro handheld. While being able to decently run about 70% of the SNES library and about 70% of the GBA library (the program aboard the SF2000 is the equivalent of Open Dingux firmware). That's pretty darn good for a $24 retro handheld! Consoles such as the Powkiddy X16 can only run GBA, GBC and GB. While a majority of cheap emulation devices glitch out at any rom you throw at it. The V90 is a tad bit more powerful than this SF2000 when Adam Image custom firmware is installed onto it.

To bad on the snes front, but yeah, many cheap handhelds dont run them at all and many cther cheap handhelds that cost even more that this one are far worse. Nice that your buttons dont sink in, Creative Gaming has a vid on it and his buttons sink in like Sonics.

It’s a definitely a mix bag of sorts with emulation sadly but the screen is so good for that price…and I have had a few people saying that there SF2000 is fine button wise, but some are having the same issue..shame really but I think with that price it’s inevitable

@@reesemartin3285 the are lithium cell designations (batteries, the GOOD ones, Tesla's literally have a plate of about 1200 21700s under them) it's just their size 18mm diameter 65mm length 0 just means it's round, 18650. 21mm Diameter, 70mm length, 0 means it's round. 21700. There's also LiPo, or lithium polymer cells, those are the squishy-ish square flat ones that phones, etc. Use. Power tools and most older laptops use several 18650s, the best flashlights use 18650s, and generally speaking 21700s are considered to be the best size to power storage ratio

What i really love about it is that they finally use 18650 batteries. There's good brand batteries available at an affordable price like f.e. the LG INR18650-MJ1 (3400mAh), costs about six or seven bucks.Those will last WAY longer then the ones that come with the handheld.

@@Yixdy exactly, same here. I#ve got quite some 18650 batteries, left over from vaping. But as most of them are flat tops except of two which came with a flashlight, it depends on how they realized the battery compartment, if they thought about to make it compatible with button top AND flat top 18650s ... to find out about that was actually the main reason for me to order one of those handhelds, just to check p and play around with different 18650s. It makes so much more sense to use widely available good quality round cells instead of those crappy stone age Nokia BL-5c batteries that many chinese cheapo retro handhelds come with, usually these are even below 1000mah - if authentic Nokia. And over here those BL-5C cost about 6,- what is the same price as a new button top round cell from a major brand. If this 20-bucks-handheld even can take flat tops, i'd get two Samsung 30Q for the price of one crappy BL-5C

My Silver ANBERNIC RG280V just came in today. I usually dislike smaller display handhelds, but this one is quite a gem! Love the craftsmanship, love the button layout, overall compact design. I realize Adam Image is a good firmware option but I really like the Open Dingux stock firmware. Just discovered the stock firmware includes a pretty impressive video media player called FFPlay! I can actually load movies on this compact retro handheld and play them along with music files. Had I known this, I would have gotten a 1TB micro sd instead of a 256GB sd. I can do the same things with my ANBERNIC 300X, which has the same Open Dingux stock firmware. You know, people often complain about ANBERNIC charging a higher price over other handhelds, but I think they have to because of the quality you get from their handhelds. This Data Frog with the buttons getting hung under the face of the handheld is an example of what I'm talking about when it comes to quality. I've never had any buttons getting hung on any of my ANBERNICs, the buttons are always raised up quite a bit. So, the ANBERNICs are worth the price!

I think with a light mod you can sort the buttons plus there are plenty of sellers out there for buttons that would also work on it but you are right Anbernic have good quality and that’s what you pay the extra buck for man. I do the love the 35XX and the mini plus but the rg280v is so unique love it

If you're worried that this $20 price point is all you can afford, don't be. In my 4 years of collecting hand helds, this is the best value I've seen by far. Now a $100 dollar hand held should be moderatly better but not by an enormous margin. The construction is better than almost all my handhelds and it's the most comfortable one i own. Now there is a little screen taring in some games but not a big amount. The thing to remember is that most SNES games will play very slow Unless you restart them by going to the first entry in history and restart the game,which is not a big deal to me. Also the search and history are great features to find the games you like which are not available on many other handhelds 5-13 x the price. Yes you can buy better with a bigger screen and processor but it will cost much more. I find this pretty adequate for these lower end games.

I can play all these games on my Android smartphones and modded PSP and Vita. Yet, I still dig it! SNES had my favorite controller ever. It's why I got an 8BitDo SN30 Pro. I just love the idea playing games on an SNES controller. I don't mind the glitches here and there if it's only $23. This really isn't bad for $23 USD. 'Pilotwings' and 'Super Mario World' seem to run much more smoothly for you than for me. I have a new version of the console (and the operating system), but 'Pilotwings' doesn't work for me at all, which means that complete graphics (like the landing field for a parachute jump) aren't displayed at all, I just see blue sky. Does anyone have any idea why this could be?

Welcome are well known for making very cheap devices and they all display the word "welcome" when it's turned on (no matter if it's a phone, camera or MP3 player) and I suspect this might also be a welcome device

Welcome screens are specific to stock firmware on Actions Semi SoCs, and not a characteristic of any manufacturer at all. True that they never got any CFW (the platform is closed as hell with binary blobs everywhere, heavily encrypted firmware and Windows only tools), but there's actually a way to get custom software running discovered around Christmas 2012 by ULi (look up JXD A3300 Spectrum emulator). Aand this one can't be Actions' based, those use specific closed-source (while some originally GPL licensed!) emulation libraries mandated by the platform which have quite specific observable quirks not present in this video. GBA, for one, usually runs very smooth likely because it's a heavily optimised custom job, not a stolen open-source one featured here.

That being said as a tinkerer (but not a content creator) I'd probably try trashy things like lining my wall with blankets or something. a trick for if the games dont run fast. close out of the game with select+start and then reopen the game. for some reason they play 200% faster if u do this. i really like aerofighter for snes with this handheld

Don't beleive them. There is a bug that games run slow when you turn it on...after exiting and restarting, they improve but its still not great.

@@peejae082004 got mine meanwhile and can report that flat top 18650 batteries also work fine in it. There's a spring on the " - " side and the " + " - connector just sticks out wide enough to make good contact.

FC3000 has AllWinner F1C100S with 64 MBytes integrated SDRAM (SiP), SF2000 is confirmed to have hynix HY5PS1G1631C (128 MBytes) external, thus the chips are definitely different.

Interesting. Is it a great handheld, no. But take into account the price and what it can do its defo worth considering, if you like these sorts of small handhelds. To be honest, I expected worse emulation and there are plenty other cheap handhelds that are far worse, and plenty cheap ones that still cost a little more than this are and worse even. Screen looks good and while sound quality isnt 100% perfect it seems to go plenty loud and still good. Also nice its using this diff battery. What I wonder is how adding your own games works via sd card, the folder structure, can you add your own box images etc.

Totally agree with you, the pice is so cheep and to have some games playing really well, is a bonus at that price point! Not sure if it will happen but some custom firmware would sort out a lot of the issues, the buttons I think it can be sorted with some lite modding and the battery is definitely a good thing as long as you keep the voltage you should be able to get a huge battery for it, am actually thinking of trying to mod it with a pi4 lol and I will be doing another video on adding games…well if that’s actually possible

I think you gave this the fairest review. Others acted as if super and advanced wouldn't play at all, which isn't true. Maybe reviews need to take into account that people are first-timers on this one. We haven't played the 5 star systems. This is a good beginner. In the US, I got mine with one controller off ali, with discount and shipping for 10 dollars, in a week. I'm thinking of ordering a couple more.

Just dropping back to say, it looks like you got an unfortunate sticky button there. Mine just arrived today and first thing I did was repeatedly press those action buttons, mine luckily all ok. So hopefully you were able to open and sort that out

So my only complaint so far is with Megadrive, it seems that what would be Button C is mapped to the R trigger button on this. Sonic and Wonderboy are ok as just use jump and jump with attack. So on an MD controller B and C would be same actions and work ok on this. But games like Altered Beast, the Jump action is mapped to R button, what would be MD controller C button, and not easy to do. Same issue with other games which uses the A, B and C buttons. So some of my favourite MD games which use 3 buttons I'll not play on this. But Strider, only uses 2 buttons, so happy can play that on it 👍

Why should they have bothered devising duplicates? with the 16G card they are shipping, whole romsets are possible. I'd advise backing it up immediately on arrival though, those cards are usually of extremely low quality, and they usually ship the games in cryptic custom format glued with a preview.

@@bnister I meant that sometimes these cards which come with the roms often are not clean sets and it's a bit lame having multiple game titles showing for same game in the wheel/list. It's good that this card seems to be pretty clean and looking nice. I'll definitely be backing up that card though yeah, had that happen once to me before with my Anbernic RG350m and I hadn't backed it up and it corrupted almost soon as I got it. I've had shipping update today for this Frog and should arrive on 2nd May 👍
