Hey, MainMemory! Long time no see! I don't know if you know, but Sonic 3's Sound Driver has a tempo change modifier controller. The maximum the Sound Driver ever reaches is $01, which is equal 4 times the original song tempo ($02 being equal to 2, $04 = 1.5, $08 = 1.25, and so on). The Special Stage has 5 tempo stages: 1, 1.0625, 1.0833, 1.125 and 1.25.

Picture it, it's the mid 90's, you're out of school for the summer and playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the fourth time despite having other Sega games and maybe even a Nintendo 64 or a PlayStation already because it's just that good. You got all the regular Chaos Emeralds during the Sonic 3 portion and had gotten all but one Super Emerald in the Sonic & Knuckles portion and you're now in Lava Reef Zone with one last chance to get that last Super Emerald to unlock Hyper Sonic. You're doing it, you're doing great, but you're missing just four blue spheres and as you run around looking for them, the music just gets faster and faster and Sonic just runs faster and faster and you know that when you find them, that's it. All or nothing, do or die, you know that if you mess up, if you fail to pull it off and get those last four blue spheres perfectly, you won't get that last Super Emerald and you'll have to reset the game and run through Lava Reef Zone again to get to that giant ring to try again.
