I forgot to mention it in the video, but if you notice the satellite count isn't as high as it should be with the V2 GPS using Glonass. The UBEC I'm using is a bit noisy and preventing it from getting more. I may swap over to using one of the internal BECs in the ESCs for the next flight. Using that one I can easily lock 15+ satellites on the ground. I usually prefer an external one, but not if it's going to reduce my GPS precision and reliability... lol This being a relatively smaller airframe, and my decision to install everything in the fuselage means I need to be diligent in selecting "clean" components (EMI wise) and spacing them as good as I can to make the most of it.

That's def one of your best video's, the info and relaxed way you did the initial flight with the Vector showing setting up trims and the explanation is spot on, I am about to maiden a Skyhunter with a vector and you've just given us all a perfect How-To for anyone doing it for the first time.Also that plane does look really good, I am seriously considering one as a twin is on my bucket list, and I have a spare Vector too. Design is pretty much a scale model of a Tecnam. Good place to start in the design process. Counter rotating twins will be more efficient than most comparable models with only one motor/prop, especially pushers due to lower disk loading.. handling will be better too due to no slipstream effect, no torque effect, no P effect, and no gyroscopic precession, only gyroscopic stabilization... not sure why anyone flies single motor aircraft these days anyway.. cost of two smaller motors is the same as one larger motor. same goes for ESC's. nice setup!!
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
Right, there's so many benefits to the way a twin handles in the air... lol I was always under the impression that they are not as efficient, but apparently it's not a big loss if any. I always like your input on airframes like this! Someone else pointed out that this was similar to the Tecnam P2006T. It's very close, apart from the retracts, winglets, and it seems this wing is tapered less than the full scale Tecnam as well.

I notice you really like the runcam eagle, at least you did awhile ago. I am looking for a decent dedicated flight cam, any suggestions? For me all the detail i can get is priority, old man eyesight and slow reflexes are setting in. Flights can happen anytime of day... actually i would be ok with a day cam and a low light cam. Or if you have any other ideas. Its all going onto the AR Wing Pro so there is a so many cam options. I do have a runcam 2 4k for the HD, and i will incorperate a pan and tilt at some point. Kinda sounds like i dont know what i want but i like diversity. Great video, thank you

Hi Keith, thanks for the awesome coverage. My Binary is almost complete identical to yours. One quick question: may I able to set up manual dual rates (50%, 70%, 100%) on my transmitter without affecting the Vector? Do I need to change anything on Vector settings or is just happening between the transmitter and the receiver? Thanks a lot!
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
You can use rate in your transmitter like normal, just be sure to have 100% rate when you run the wizard in the Vector, otherwise it will think your reduced rates are full throw and treat them as such. ;) Once everything is set up though, you're free to use lower rates, that's what I have set up too, triple rates on a switch... lol

The Vector logs a bunch of data that you can review later if needed. That display on the OSD is just a percentage of the space used, just a reminder to clear it before a flight if I need/want to. Look on page 82 of the current manual (www.eagletreesystems.com/Manuals/vector.pdf) for info about the data logging. Page 119 mentions the OSD item "Logger Buffer % Used"

Hei, great video as always! I have a question about the Binary. I was thinking of ordering a spare pare of wings for it and planing a mod: Lengthen the wingspan about the area of the flaps of the spare wings. Idea would be, that it could fly slower, when needed and maybe carring a little more. Do you think, that would make any sense - you have flown it several times... Is it a stupid idea? ;)

Hi pirate, just curious, how did you mount the motor from the wooden plate? Did you use the metal X mount or you screw the motor directly to the wood? The issue for me is when directly screw it to the wood, the circular clip in the shaft is touching the wood. Did you have the same issue?
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
The motors mount directly to the wood firewalls without using X mounts. The clips did contact the wood a bit on mine too, so to be safe I removed a little material from the wood plates so there was enough clearance. I just used a small round attachment in my Dremel if I remember right.

I am planning to use the Eaglepro 2, an ImmerionRC 5.8 ghz vTX. The only question I have is on what channel do you put the control for the pan and tilt? Thanks.
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
I usually just put them on the next two in line after everything else... lol On this one I have the Dragonlink receiver set up with all channels on sbus, the last one (ch.12) being RSSI. That runs into the Vector for the main 4 channels controlling ailerons, elevator, throttle, and rudder. 5 and 6 are mode and submode. 7 and 8 are pan and tilt, those two are also mapped to two of the PWM outputs in the receiver with the servos plugged directly to it. 9 was used to turn the lights on and off until I pulled the controller out... lol I'll see if I can get that sorted and back in the plane soon. The only thing to consider if you have a receiver with limited outputs that you can't configure, you might want to move pan and tilt down to lower channels that you can run directly off the receiver, say 5 and 6. Then use some of the higher channels in the sbus stream for mode and submode in the Vector.

I have that same issue with my Vectors - course corrections with aileron always feel a bit odd and jerky. I've tried reducing Stabilizer Responsiveness to 2 or 1 and it has no impact. I really kind of wish ETS would look at that and try to fix the smoothness with aileron adjustments.

Yeah mine have always done it. I just kind of got used to it, there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of that I've found. I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly larger version either, but this does seem to work... I can't say at what point you'd start to "feel" the weight. This one as flown here is about 1770g. Sonicmodell did say they've flown one loaded down at 3Kg and it flew, but I'm guessing it was heavy at that point. lol I did make it a point to keep this one somewhat lighter, I left out the flaps, landing gear, etc. for now. If you really wanted to you could use a smaller battery, leave out the lights, etc. to save even more weight. I don't think I'd worry too much though, it flies so good like it is I wouldn't try to improve it!

I was really interested in the Eagle 1.3 vtx. You decided against installing it, did you have any issues with it our just wanted to go with something else. I noticed they use a switching reg to buck the voltage down, do you think that would cause issue on the 433 and/or sat acquistion?
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
I actually did install it first, but had some issues so I swapped it out with the 800mW Partom. With the Eagle, I was having trouble getting a good GPS lock. To be fair though, I ran into other issues with this build and RF noise. The LED light controller cuts the UHF range down a lot, so I took it out. The first UBEC I had in it was also hurting the GPS performance. Being a relatively smaller fuselage and the way I laid out the gear in it instead of moving parts out in the wings, any noise will be a bigger problem than if it were on a larger airframe with gear spread out better. I will try to use that vTX in a different plane at some point, where I can get it out in the wing away from other gear.

I'm currently flying freestyle quads, but I have my bixler hanging up. I'd like to get that back in the air again before we lose the summer. I had a pan and tilt fpv on that one too, its alot of fun.
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
55MHz? The old analog AM/FM radios were either 72MHz for air, 75MHz for surface, or 27MHz for either. In the early days of FPV, people were using 72MHz because 2.4GHz was as popular yet, or as good as it is now, and 72MHz could do more range using gear we already had. Today though, it's definitely not the best, or even "good"... by modern standards... lol Being analog it's a lot more vulnerable to noise than a digital 2.4 system like FrSky. A good UHF system will walk all over it. ;) Seriously though, even a basic 2.4GHz FrSky system available today will do a better job, assuming your video system plays well with it. 1.3GHz can sometimes be an issue and need filters to work well alongside 2.4, and obviously a 2.4 video system is a no-go. There's plenty of cheap 5.8 gear that will match a good 2.4 radio that works great together though. I'm in Louisiana BTW

@@bonafidepirate Ya I thought I heard you say "The bayou", your right, it's 72MHZ. It was the Tower Hobbies system 3000, I got with a nitro trainer. Man that was a fun plane, but very messy. Those nitro engines will spew fuel all over everything. Ya 1.3 is close to half of 2.4, so it can interfere. I think I learned that in HAM Radio class. I will be sticking to 2.4, I was just curious. Isn't it possible the 1,3 VTX is causing low sats? Had this problem too untill I rearanged the antenna
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's one of the first things I checked... lol In fact I had a different transmitter on here first (T1013) that was flat out killing the GPS. It wouldn't lock at all until I swapped it for the Partom. I've spent more time than I should have over the past week dealing with EMI in this one, between the UBECs, vTXs, and the LED controller. I'm still on the fence about using one of the internal BECs in the ESCs. It's a habit I picked up years ago when NO ONE used them... It was a sure crash waiting to happen... lol To be fair, they're much better these days, and they are 3A switching ones in these ESCs. They should be fine. Next flight will be either using that, or with a different UBEC in it for sure.

I have a feeling this one is going to be hard to beat for 2019 got mine in the works right now except for I'll be using 6.5" props higher KV Motors for a fast point a and point B long range setup. this thing is awesome and you did an awesome job representing it. @bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stock props with the power combo are counter rotating. I'm running them with the top blades turning inwards toward the fuselage, the usual setup for a twin. It will be interesting to see how it performs with higher kv motors. I imagine it can cruise pretty fast with the thin surfaces and streamlined fuselage. Especially if you use the canopy.
@FarmerFpv

@@bonafidepirate yeah that's one thing that caught my attention was it's a very aerodynamic design the fuselage all the flying surfaces look like they were designed to go fast. If I choose the right combo I think you don't have a chance at giving my mini drak a run for its money LOL. But then I'd have to buy a second one for a strictly long-range high efficiency God these things are addicting and it's partially your fault haha I hope you're having a good weekend in the weather is holding up for you to get more flying! Yep, I glued the firewalls to the foam, they're holding up fine so far. The slot in the foam is actually a little more secure than some other models I've had with firewalls just glued flat on the front of a fuselage.. lol I used "Foam-Cure" glue for EPP/EPO from Bob Smith Industries. Just about any glue that gets a good bond to both the wood and foam and isn't too brittle (like thin CA) should work OK.

Thanks, I appreciate the support! :) That little antenna is an old Racewood monopole that comes with their transmitters, like this one here: www.dpcav.com/xcart/1.3GHz-A-V-Transmitter-300mW.html Ready Made R/C used to sell the antenna by itself for 2 or 3 bucks, but I can't find them anywhere now. They are OK for a medium range small/light antenna, but not as good as a dipole. DPCAV even suggests upgrading to a dipole on the page for that transmitter. I just used it because it's small honestly. I have a couple of them on other planes that work well enough. The antenna that comes with that Partom vTX will likely perform better.

@bonafidepirate

Grip for launch is fine, you just have to watch powering it up, it's got enough thrust to get away from you... lol I launched at about 3/4 throttle, any more it was hard to hang onto. I found the UBEC is what's hurting the GPS count. If I swap to using one of the internal ones in the ESC I get 15+ sats on the ground. I'll use that, or replace it with a different UBEC later.

Is there a way to get one of your pan and tilts since I don't have a 3D printer?
@bonafidepirate
@bonafidepirate 5 жыл бұрын
There's a number of places that offer 3D printing services, though I've never used one and can't recommend one... lol I was fortunate enough to have a few friends in a group that had printers and made a few parts for me early on, and I finally got my own printer and dove into the hobby. I don't regret it. Besides being useful for prototyping parts, I've had lots of fun learning about it all. I've now turned that first printer into a whole different machine, there's few original parts still on it... lol I have a second one that is a much better starting point for anyone intersted in getting one. (Ender 3) I've started modding it a bit recently too, but honestly it's a damn fine printer out of the box, and a few small upgrades make it excellent. Any more than that is just "because I can" kind of like most hobbies... lol If you can find someone local with a printer that will print them, I'd suggest asking a few questions and take a look, you might find it enjoyable too. I've noticed that a LOT of the 3D printing community is also part of the R/C hobby.

The only easy answer, BOTH! lol They're both excellent planes, I've always said the Skyhunter is my favorite. This Binary is about as close as I've come to a contender to knock the Skyhunter off it's throne. For pure piloting, at least right now I'd lean towards the Binary, it's just so nice to fly. Maybe once the "new" wears off I'll miss the Skyhunter more but right now I'd be fine just flying this one. Where the Skyhunter still wins is being able to load down a lot more battery than you can in this one, and carry more/bigger cameras and not care. Sure Sonicmodell says they've loaded this Binary down and flown it nearly twice as heave as mine is, but will it still fly so good at that weight?

The bay in the nose for the optional gear probably has plenty of room for a small retracting nose wheel. The main gear I'm not so sure about. There's a fair bit of room back there and the plywood battery tray extends back to where the main gear bolts in, so there's a good hard point to mount into. It might take a bit of cutting foam to figure something out there. It would certainly be cool though! I may try the fixed gear on this one eventually. I'm just not sure how well the small wheels will work in the rough grass here. It would be amazing on a paved runway though, no question!
