It’s even crazier in Plush’s (somewhat) new 1:20.80 TAS where he even beats Koopa the Quick to the mountaintop after getting 99 coins (and uses Instant Release combined with the bob-omb being reactivated at the mountaintop to get a double star spawn. Bowser is watching Mario throughout his whole adventure as he collects the 120 stars that had previously been scattered throughout the castle. Bowser is growing more and more concerned for his personal safety when Mario doesn't die. Ever. Bowser is tremendously terrified of Mario when he begins to flip and kick and literally clip through walls because he's moving with such speed and grace. By the third battle with Bowser he just gives up and gives Mario the final Grand Star.

He actually does die. 1:05:18 It's a DSG (death star grab) where Mario dies somehow (in this case the death barrier) and then gets a star before Mario becomes immobile and intangible (in this case by using water's property of always sending you to the surface when you jump in)

I did the math, and yes, it's an average 40.3415 seconds per star (including the end battle until the input stops) but from the moment the game starts up to the moment Mario touches the 120th star, it would be an average 39.9833 seconds, because the game started up 2 seconds into the video (the intro was 2 seconds long) so Mario actually touched the 120th star at 1:19.58 in the game, or 79.9666 minutes. @@saintzayan8205 No, its called backwards long jumps (BLJs). It works because when you long jump, you get some speed boost. If you do long jumps backward, then you get a negative speed boost, and so because negative speed isn't capped in this game, you can keep accelerating if you chain lots of BLJs together quickly
