Birds are coelosaurian theropods that evolved around the Middle to Upper Jurassic along with most other coelosaurs like Dromaeosaurids, Tyrannosauroids, Troodontids, Ornithomimids, etc. Meaning, birds were already birds and flying around throughout the Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous amongst their brethren. Early chickens and ducks were already walking the earth around the time Tyrannosaurus was alive. The coelosaurs (which include birds) are essentially what people call, the more bird-like dinosaurs as they are closer to birds than to Allosaurus. The Coelosaurs are a sister clade to the Carnosaurs which split of from them earlier, the more traditional theropods like Allosauroids (Allosaurids + Carcharodontosaurids), Megalosaurids, and Spinosaurids. Coelosaurs and Carnosaurs are both Tetanurans which are a sister clade to the Ceratosaurians (Ceratosaurids + Abelisauroids). The Ceratosaurs and Tetanurans are Averostrans. Beyond that is all primitive theropods like the Coelophysids and the proto-theropods. The theropods are then sister clades to the sauropods, which form a group together and are a sister clade to the ornithischians. In more simple terms. Coelosaurs are all animals closer to birds than to Allosaurus. Carnosaurs are all animal closer to Allosaurus than to birds. Tetaturans are all animals closer to birds than to Ceratosaurus. Ceratosaurians are all animals closer to Ceratosaurus than to birds. and so on ...
