The key scene to understand the ending (and really the main theme which the show revolves around) is the scene with Nagara and Nozomi talking on the beach in episode 11. But it isn't the part where she says to Nagara to become her friend in their original world if she is alive. It's the part just before that, where she tells him what she will do once they get back - "I'm going to find the curmudgeonly-looking boy, [...] grab him by the scruff of the neck and ask him a question...". This is the key phrase. The main plot and character arcs of the show revolve around these surreal drifting worlds, the inevitability and 'stasis' that comes with them, but also the power of the individual to break away from the fear and anxiety of that reality (and by extension the harsh circumstances of their original world, and for the viewer - actual reality), to transform despite such circumstances, to move forward (as is tradition for sekai-kei anime which Sonny Boy without a doubt is). Nagara's arc, like Mizuho tells us just before the final scene - is whether he can hold on to even a small part of the person he managed to become in that other reality, even if that reality might not amount to anything or have even existed in the end. If he can, than choosing to go back will not be a mistake, than everything that happened in the drift world wouldn't just be meaningless randomness (remember when Ace's group were thinking that sticking with Ms. Aki and Asekaze was a mistake earlier in the story and kept bouncing back and forth with no real progress and growth?). The light that Nozomi's power allowed her to see in the ending scene when they reach it with Mizuho metaphorically and symbolically becomes Nozomi. But what does that whole sequence mean subtextually? For Nagara (and Mizuho to a lesser/different extent) this represents his acceptance to move forward despite everything, to embrace his new self even if the world they will return to is their old world (with all of its difficulties) which they can't change. Nagara goes back to check on the bird that he initially left for dead (symbolic moment for his past self). The scene doesn't go as the viewer expects, signalling the he isn't quite the person he was on the island. But the most important hint here is Nozomi's behaviour. The "curmudgeonly-looking boy" this time around isn't Nagara. Instead, this time she gravitates toward Asakaze (which his portrayal throughout the show and him being the only one left alone in the drift world has painted him as someone just as "stuck", unable to move forward and in need of help as Nagara was initially). She has gravitated towards him the same way she gravitated towards Nagara in the very beginning of the show, just like she gravitates towards helping hurt and helpless animals. Nagara is not the person from episode 1 though, he's not the one that needs her help (which is Nozomi's defining character trait) as much any more. It's this shift exactly which bewilders viewers that the creators of the show use to reinforce that what happened in the drift mattered, that returning wasn't a mistake, that Nagara managed to change and move forward in a way that his self from episode 1 was incapable of doing thanks to all those experiences. A classic sekai-kei ending.

Sonny boy's episodes always seemed to take so long, and yet it fits so well. I finished up the slime anime before binging sonny and I kept finding myself thinking halfway through an episode that it should be done. Yet that same feeling, that feeling that time was slowed and yet taking forever, meshed so well with the show in a way I just can't explain.

Sonny boy isnt my favorite series of all time, but that running scene is my favourite all time scene by a good margin. Really does make you feel like its the culmination of years, or even thousands of years despite being only 12 short episodes. So many details to discover between the flashes of imagery or the expressions on Nagara or Mizuhos faces. Finally, its also audiovisually stunning!

I'm still bothered (haunted?) by Mizuho's expressions in that final sprint through the psychedelic void. Nagara is following Nozomi's light, looking euphoric, determined, focused, but Mizuho's not looking at the light. She's looking at Nagara, and she looks worried. Nagara is always in front, in places literally dragging Mizuho with him. Is she having second thoughts? I hope I never figure out a reliable answer for Sonny Boy, though. Because then I'll stop thinking about it.
@Karozy4869
@Karozy4869 2 жыл бұрын
Good observation, but I don't think it's worried that describe her expression. I don't even think her expression was on the negative side at any point. To me, it's more like she's admiring Nagara for his determination and their journey for making it this far. Okay, maybe a little fear of being left behind when they were connected by the rope, as you can see she's more at ease when they held hands later on. And a little doubt along the side of "why does this take so long?", but definitely not a second thought here because I don't think anyone would want to stay after listening to the update about everyone from Asakaze. There is nothing left in the drift world for Mizuho to return to.

Her expression during the run was her doubting herself whether she can accept the reality of her real world situation. You can see that she wants to go back to the static yet exciting world that is "the island" when she goes back in the school to go look for the portals in parts of the school.
@Karozy4869
@Karozy4869 2 жыл бұрын
@@123evilwolf it doesn't feel that way to me. Her nod with Nagara on the island after Nozomi's funeral shows how determined she is in returning to their own world. She even accepted to leave her beloved cats behind to do that. To say that she was doubting the return trip contradicts with her character. She went back to school and did those test not because she wanted to return. She only did that because she considered all that happened on the Island as a dream, no more, but when Nagara came to see her, she knew it was real and she has to double-check everything to see if she's truly out of the drift world or not.

A very unique, complex & memorable anime for sure and now one of my top favorites. One to remember for a long time hopefully. Great vid. I don't think the principle "couldn't" stop them to me it looked more like he advised them to not enter "that" version of their world because Nozomi was dead there as the previous frame depicted through the funeral white flowers on her desk (6:45). So he actually helped them by advising them to continue walking until they found another world where she lives.

@@ThaTrueRealmWalker I don't have the answer and the author didn't mention this point in any of his interviews that I read but one person online suggested that the girl with yellowish hair that was working with him in the last ep, the one that was giving Nagara a peculiar dazed look, was the character that inherited the deceased Nozomi's memories. The person thinks that because that girl was immediately shown the moment the director asked that question. It's an interesting theory but it seems unlikely to me and there's no real way to know until Natsume himself answers it.

I think also the ending song is more related to the story. Because tha song says "If a boy endured sorrows in the train of 2000 light years, he will meet a girl". (This us one possible translation). I don't know if the light year unit is used as time measurement (wrongly) or it is really ment to be the length of a journey. Maybe the journey Nagara and Mizuho did to return home. And some of them spent 2000 years in the drift. Anyway the song line "a boy meet a girl after 2000 light year train, don't say goodbye" has (I think) to be related to the nagara&nozomy and nagara&mizuho relationships. What do you think?

I believe Mizuho ignored Nagara just because she already knew that things are different in this world. She came in this reality only for Nagara. late, but Mizuho always wanted to get back to her world, she likely ignored him because she herself was still unsure, whether they truly remained the same as they were on the island or did they change by coming to this new world, hence why her last words to him were basically telling him to own up to all the changes that happened to him on the island, and move forward in life, and she will do the same.
@TheRandomYoYo
@TheRandomYoYo Жыл бұрын
I am quite certain most of the show is a metaphor regarding humanity itself. How we started adrift, and through talents, and structure, we developed to higher things. you have the beginning of laws when there is no "god" to observe, you have the inception of trade, meaning of work, the creation of value, you have the creation of sport and competitiveness to push you further and give a sense of meaning and purpose, you have the creation of religion, to give people questioning an answer, even if not the correct one, and finally you have the exploration and curiosity faced with the explicit description of being "the same" or worse "interchangeable". And this culminates with a space journey. Which is the idea of exploring further, freeing from the birthmother Earth, with all that comes with that. Throughout you have the interpersonal relations, with multiple B plots going on to related to specific things a lot of us might be feeling. Drifting through life, since it doesn't matter anyway, wanting to protect others because they themselves could flourish in a field where you never even had the chance, needing to feel special and wanted because our own structures seemingly failed. And finally I think it is worth mentioning that our experiences and our own core values do not fit with any of this, so from our humanmade systems we should discard them. Yet we don't because they mean something. The MonkeyFur that tastes of sunshine, could be nothing else to someone not interested in sunshine, but to some it will be a core experience that makes them feel safe. None of our experience matter in the grand scale of the universe, but those same experiences form us, and shape our objectives and views, and we can change the world, as we have been since day one. And that I think is the core of the show. To make you think about the experiences that matter to you, why they do so, and what you can take from them. Like the scene with Nagara and Nozomi talking about the cake she liked. That one tiny experience matters to her, and it will still do, even if to Nagara it's a trivial thing.

I had some anime pending so I just finished Sonny Boy, I have some questions about it. 1) If Asakaze wanted he could have returned to the “normal” (even if it’s a parallel one) world and since when? 2) why Yamabiko didn’t return whith Mizuho and Nagara? 3) Why the cats of Mizhuho had to stay in that other world? 4) How was the teacher there and what were her real plans? 5) In the last episode they said nobody (of the original classmates) wanted to go back but that it was “easy”, if it was why no one of the other generation students left? 6) Was there any motive why only the students of the class 3-2 where in that scenario?
@UlfMTG
@UlfMTG 2 жыл бұрын
1) He could've always done it. Asakaze's power is controlling gravity, and that includes the folding of spacetime. Maybe he just didn't notice the extent of his powers until the last episode, or maybe he just didn't see a point in returning to a world where every experience he's had so far is meaningless. 2) What's the point? He probably can't even remember his own face, or his own family, or anything for that matter. He's been in that dimension for over 5000 years. 3) Because back on earth they're just regular cats, their self-will would disappear upon return. At least in that world they can keep living. 4) No idea. 5) Because going back to this shithole we call a planet is the hard way, not the easy one. It's easier for them to stay back there, where their experiences have meaning. Going back would mean starting from scratch, in a world they don't know anymore, going back to the same shitty routine. Nagara and Mizuho believe that even though it is tough, it is worth chasing those few moments of Light, like Nozomi did. It's an incredibly difficult decision to make, everyone else just decided to take the easy path. 6) it was a combination of the cat's, Mizuho's and Nagara's power. Maybe it was something they desired deep in their heart and God just willed it into existence. The cats copied them, Mizuho gave them immortality, and Nagara just happened to bring his classmates with him when he was trying to "escape" his world. You can tell in the first episode, they go adrift when Nozomi tries to confront Nagara but all he wants to do is run away, and he ends up "escaping" everyone with him.

Wanted to comment on 1) I think Asakaze reveals that he did go back to the normal world. In episode 5 at around 22:50 he says: "That was an awful world, no one was nice to me" while his skateboard falls into the black pit that he created. If you think about it there's nowhere on the island with pavement that he could skate. This tells me he must have used it in the normal world, been unhappy, came back and threw away the board since he never wanted to go back. A minute before this scene we see Asakaze's outline with the trippy imagery that is often seen throughout the show when characters are changing worlds.

Personally, I wish the Nozomi actually died like they foreseen. It would've drove the "real world sucks" and how they don't have a heroes' welcome coming back. Seeing Nozomi with Asakaze also felt a bit NTR. Hopefully Nagara ends up with Mizuho with the canon ending. There are also still some loose ends. What happened to Hoshi when the trap was such an antagonist in the beginning? Why didn't Asakaze join the 2 if the island's gone and are the rest dead?
@oofie4660
@oofie4660 2 жыл бұрын
It's not explicitly confirmed and shown, but Hoshi is already dead as he was the first one who created the concept of "death" before War did. Remember the electric chair scene? Also Asakaze didn't join them cuz maybe he decided stay behind to help Nagara and Mizuho get out of the adrift world and in order to that that he must remain on the world to be the one to push them. Maybe there are other more logical reason though we will never know as the author intended most of the thing in the story to be open for interpretation. Also not everything have to be romance. Nagara, Mizuho and Nozomi can still be friend with each other without being in love for each other. Like Nagara said at the end of the anime, "Our lives are only beginning. What lies ahead will take just a little bit longer". He still have a lot of time left to grow up more, make more decision and move forward in his life. There is always possibility he will be friend again with Nozomi in the future, or even commit relationship with her as long he make his mind to it, but that is not really the point of the Sonny Boy anime.

@aejei 2 жыл бұрын
But the nozomi we knew actually died though, she's basically a whole different person in the new reality, so it's not ntr. Having nozomi and asakaze in the ending make great parallels that tie up the ending too.

From my perspective i think the characters are not real but some carbon copies of the original created by the school principal by the desires of some students to escape reality.i don't know if this is caused by the desire of 1 or all the students but the copies are given powers and specific jobs that they didn't know.cause from the dog perspective he is from the future so the world's created have space time distortions and with his explanation we can see that God chooses certain people with certain powers and they create that world based on their will and their rules and the others can live on those world's . So basically each year people are chosen to be copied like Gantz anime but the original ones still have to face the harsh reality of the world . At the final episode the protagonist goes back to the world and this caused the merging of him into his real body but deleting the new personality developed when he was gone for so long basically possession. The experience in his new world created a new person . The other copies became energy to sustain world's so basically they are the harvests of God like a battery and maybe that's the reason the God created their copies like a battery for his recharge.

I don't need a whole fckn 10hour explaining of anime to understand how masterpiece is this Its shit Every episode is a waste of time Only thing I thought through anime was: "fck maybe in 12 episode it will show why this is masterpiece" But nah, its just a shitty story For example: Odd taxi Its not need a 12 eps wait to find out why this is masterpiece Its good from start, but last ep is a greatest move in plot which makes all better without being necessary for the plot

Asakaze didnt save nozomi because at that very moment he just didnt do anything. There is no particular reason, he just didnt do anything. There is two compass because the other one was copied by sakura to tell Nagara and Mizuho that Nozomi is dead. One more is the original compass from Asakaze. Ms. Aki is just another student. One of the core themes of the show is "the world can't be changed", and the obvious comeback is "you will change", however it is never explicitly said. Nozomi becoming a compass, essentially dying, can't be changed, her dying in the real world, also can't be changed. By bringing two compasses back to the real world, Nozomi is left alive, but really, nothing changed, since "their" Nozomi is still dead, in Nagara's drawer... Nailing it again, "the world can't be changed"
