Business is important, not humanity. Not only was he smart, but he also had the strongest punch of all time. His giant fists pounded like a giant slash hammer. The media and false propaganda destroyed Sonny Liston more than anything else. Muhammad Ali did not beat Liston, but journalists and all other media even in his 47 years of life after numerous victories. Sad, Very sad. His glory.

My late Father was one of Liston's sparring partners for the Machen fight. He told me that Liston's jab wasn't only the most powerful he ever felt, but he was also very accurate. Said it was like a freight train, you could see it coming but you somehow just couldn't get off the tracks in time to avoid it. He also said that up close he could tell that Liston was much older than he claimed. Unfortunately he spent his prime boxing years locked up. He faced more premiere talent on his way to the Title than any other Heavyweight that I can think of. It's really hard telling how long he could have reigned as Champion if he had gotten into boxing as a teen or young man instead of crime. Dad also said that Liston was polite when he wasn't trying to kill you, and that the only time he saw the man smile was when he saw children.

Mr. Liston really tried to be a good champion like Patterson (you know, clean cut, smiles, posing with kids and so forth) but people still looked at Floyd like their hero was just destroyed by a villain, being Mr. Liston :c That's really cool though, I bet your dad was tougher than a fired pine knot. I've read people who've sparred with him said even with extra padded gloves his fists still felt like cinderblocks.

Thanks for the kind words about my dad, he died when I was 19. To give you some indication of how tough he was I went with him to the hospital when he was dying of colon cancer so he could get X-rays done. The technician looked out in the corridor at us sitting in chairs and asked him if he was Mr. Knowlton. When he said he was she looked all surprised and said from looking at his chart she was expecting someone to be wheeled in on a stretcher. Stretcher? Hell Lady, he's the one who drove us here.

I recently watched Joseph Vincent’s documentary on Liston. Liston’s life plays out like a movie. It starts out like a “rags-to-riches” story but he never gets the love and admiration that he wanted due to his criminal past. Only to be brutally dethroned by the next generation. Truly one of the greats and deserves to be recognized and admired. Anyways, great work as usual, MMArtist!

I had a friend who met Liston in Vegas during the mid/sixties. He told me Liston’s story was that of a problem child. No matter what he achieved no one really noticed his achievement, fans hated him, so he turned his back on hem. Liston got positive attention from gangsters who saw his strength, so no matter how much good Sonny could do, it wasn’t satisfying because the public hated him, so he didn’t care to impress the fans. He did what he could to make the people he loved and respected proud of him, and many of them were criminals. He just got good attention from being a bad guy…so he became a professional bad guy as a boxer

The most amazing and inspiring aspect of Liston's career was that he managed to achieve all he did in boxing despite being born into a really screwed up life situation. Hell, he may have actually been FIVE years older than he and everyone else thought he was! No one even knows what year he was born. In boxing, five years is an eternity. And he spent a big chunk of his life in prison before his boxing career even got started. Just imagine what he may have achieved in the ring if he had gotten started earlier and had a more stable upbringing. Wow!

I've always loved Liston despite how the general public at that time sees him, it takes courage to raise above hate. And his tactics were just out of this world. Ali said Liston could break a guys arm by hitting his elbow, Ali was in a gym with him when he witness that, not just hyping in vain...

Very good analysis. I always noticed how Liston would leave his missed punches extended to steer his opponent. Liston is one of my all time favorites because he will hit wat ever is available after missing a shot and he'll do this until the ref steps in. He was not a dirty fighter as was rumored. Your pointing out how similar Liston vs Patterson is to Foreman vs Frazier is spot on. In all my years of studying heavyweight, I never realized this! Keep up the great work!

It sounds like Liston took his technique for power jabbing (leaning on his front foot) straight out of the great Jack Dempsey's book "Championship Fighting" (1:50 in the video). That power jabbing technique is one of the first fundamentals for punching power discussed in the book. The technique has a very unnatural feel when you first try it, but as shown by Sonny Liston in this video, it got great results. Dempsey's "Championship Fighting" is one of the finest instructions in "the sweet science", even today, written by a legend who developed it to the point where - fighting at 180 pounds - he was able to floor opponents 60 pounds heavier and 6 inches taller than himself. It's a "must read" for any true fan of "the sweet science."

At LAST!! This man was hands down one of the most destructive heavyweights EVER and he was a fine Heavyweight Champion who truly instilled the kind of fear in opponents that is rare to see. Liston was beautifully BRUTAL and an under-rated boxer who had surprising swiftness of foot for such a big man. He, Joe Louis and Tyson were The perfect prototypes for the devastating boxer- puncher who could execute punishment like a Surgeon deftly utilizes his scalpel. Sonny was everything you want in a heavyweight Champion in his PRIME. In truth it's hard to really pin down his prime because his age when he took up pro boxing is always an endless mystery. I would say the Liston that bludgeoned An in HIS PRIME Cleveland Williams was possibly prime Liston. Sonny had a solid chin, was oblivious to pain, hurt you wherever he hit you and could BOX very well if the situation called for it. He also had an under-rated defense. The man was fundamentally sound. His 84 inch reach was a huge asset. The only thing Liston could not do was dance laterally but his sound defense served him well. Thank you for putting up this excellent presentation. Liston deserved much more than merely being remembered as a footnote in Muhammad Alis fistic history.

Liston's jab/pursue footwork is straight out of classical fencing - push off a nearly-perpendicular back foot. The front foot sets the range of the lunge. This creates a very linear attack - very efficient transfer of power, but susceptible to someone like Ali, who attacked while circling.
@RaderizDorret
@RaderizDorret 3 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that efficient transfer of power works both ways. Given how powerful Liston was, if he got timed at just the right moment (as Ali did in their second fight), he's gonna be badly hurt at the very least. Nothing but respect for Liston, but it never ceases to amaze me that people just can't seem to grasp that generating a lot of power has the drawback of one carrying all of that power into an attack and if that attack is interrupted, the attacker's going to be having their own power used against them.

The craziest thing to me about Sonny Liston is that he was believed to really be between 32 - 34 years old when he turned pro. He never knew his real age but he was estimated to have been born between 1918-1921. That's insane. He missed all of his 20's by the time he turned pro. Could you have imagined him had he turned pro in his early 20's? That would be legit terrifying

It's a good, often missing detailed breakdown of Liston -Patterson and a little at the end with Foreman -Frazier. But, it is the how. The why is boxing is about styles and those were stylistic, as well as physical mismatches. You hear that a lot though, it's suicide for short fighters who need to come to a Liston or a Foreman, but seeing the breakdown of what actually was taking place is nice.

Seeing this clash of styles, seeing it also with Joe and Big George, I have to beg the question... Could Liston have beaten a Prime Mike Tyson or Smokin Joe also? His frames were so strong! I never noticed this skill until your breakdown... Always knew he had a reach like Lennox and a massive left arm... If Ali can dominate this man, and Floyd, and more or less survive Joe... Then you DO have to question the popular notion today that Tyson would beat Ali... I was the one saying that back when it wasn't popular, but I've never once been confident in it! Was Tyson harder or easier to KO than Joe? That really is the question! He certainly had the head movement and power! But did anyone really have the combination of power and speed needed to KO Ali? Doesn't seem so

Good video. The way he beat Patterson twice was by showing up. His trainer never wanted Patterson to fight him, word is that John Kennedy told Patterson you simply "have to beat this man." Patterson was so intimidated he never tried to fight his fight either time. Had he done so and not made a single error, he may have made it to say 10 of 15 rounds. No matter how technical Liston's victories over Patterson may have legitimately been, it was Patterson's abject fear that was key.
