My thoughts on the upcoming box set of Sonny Rollins' Freedom Weaver, which spans several weeks on a European tour and is presented here in 4 LPs for Record Store Day.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

Wow, absolutely phenomenal review! Thank you for the time and effort you put into making such a thorough, useful, and insightful video essay. As I write this, RSD is two months in the rear view mirror, but Resonance Records still has copies available at their site, in case anyone didn't get a copy on RSD. We also have the 2024 Tone Poet of Night at the VV, made from a newly discovered master tape and sounds ridiculously great compared to all previous versions. It's a great time to be a Sonny Rollins fan!

I bought the P3 50th Anniversary TT which I really love. It has mostly the same specs as the Rega P6.

Probably gonna pass on that. I would rather get the 3 disc Blue Note Tone Poet of Live at the Village Vanguard which comes out 6 days later…

That was my thinking as well - the freedom weaver is pressed in relative large numbers, should be easy enough to get at a later date

Musician and huge Sonny Rollins fan here. Ordered both new Rollins releases. I’ve already heard some of the Freedom Weaver recordings so I have a pretty good idea of quality, but really looking forward to the later long tracks where Sonny lets rip - there’s so few recordings of his improvising full tilt during his prime so these are like gold. And the Village Vanguard recordings are already an essential historical document.

Definitely on the fence about this set. I am a stickler for audio quality which will weigh heavily in purchase decision. Might opt for waiting for "Live at Village Vanguard" Tone Poet instead.

I can’t imagine you buying anything but a Technics 1200 GR2 but I’m looking forward to hearing about the whole thing.

Lotta Rollins... When all these high $ sets have dropped, I'd love to hear a few words on where money is best spent.

Thank you for the informative video. On some of these archival live sets I can’t justify the $ when it’s less than stellar sound. Fortunately the three cd set is 1/3 the price of the vinyl.

I was hoping this was a more solid/consistent in quality four disc release. But the dichotomy you described, along with the historical context, is of great interest to me. And it’s very difficult to scratch a Sonny Rollins release off the want list. I’m still all in on this one for RSD. I greatly appreciate the time you put into each of these reviews. Will you be doing the Shelly Manne RSD release?
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector 2 ай бұрын
Yea not consistent across the discs but better in many ways than I expected too, so I was still satisfied with it. I didn’t receive the Manne release so it’ll have to be top priority for me on RSD along with Cannonball!

If it was between this or the Blue Note Complete Masters 3 x LP Night at the Village Vanguard and you could only have one, which would it be? 🤔
@jazzvinylcollector

For me, it’d be the vanguard sessions (acknowledging they are quite different despite the trio format).

I loved it actually. My thing is I want a table where I can easily swap between stereo and mono cartridges without messing with any settings

At the risk of spoiling the surprise, my eyes are set on a Luxman at the moment with swappable headshells for mono/stereo

@@jazzvinylcollector You are a vinyl enthusiast like me, get one with a swappable headshell, you will absolutely love it. Having the ability to immediately hear the differences in cartridges with the music is intoxicating, which will make it very hard to go back to a non-swapable headshell. I own a Technics SL-1200 GR and I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I will be buying a mono cartridge to go along with the six other cartridges that I have. I also own a VPI Classic and a Music Hall MMF 2.2. The Technics is getting the most use. The only negative about the Technics is the cue lever that everyone complains about not being consistent, feeling cheap and hard to adjust.

US sax players: who's overrated/underrated Taste is indeed subjective but the realities/specifics of music are not. Overrated David Murray: howl without any rhythm, it's pretty much heard what he can do. Charles Lloyd: out of tune boring minor pentatonic scales all around Archie Shepp: he could not play in 1964 and has never been able since Anthony Braxton : ugly sounds and ugly sounds and ugly sounds a long chain without any surprise. Kamasi Washington: high school level with horrible sound Shabaka Hutchings: it feels like 100 years of jazz never happened. Here we are back in 1899 in Jamaica Sonny Rollins: his ego destroyed his playing at 36, sorry for him Lee Konitz: has never been able to play with the minimum energy for his sax to sound good John Coltrane after ALS: belief does not justify this self-indulgence Wayne Shorter: record some beautiful compositions wasted by a sloppy playing should have been sanctioned Ornette Coleman: as he said himself before a concert in Paris in 1988, he is especially known 'for playing the saxophone badly' Joshua Redman: mannered, mechanical with a repulsive sound. Composition without interest. Mark Turner: even if everyone repeats that it's good, my opinion will not change: it's boring Joe Lovano: the first time I heard it on a disc with Motian and Frissel I stopped the CD. The other times too. John Zorn: I'm told he's a genius...Ok then I'm a sardine. Underrated Rahsaan Roland Kirk: these albums are remembered as unforgettable festive moments. Gato Barbieri: opened the mind to the dimension, capacity and beauty of the instrument. James Carter: exuberant and spectacular technique bearing the heritage of its predecessors. Albert Ayler: a lit spirit that pierces through a sound and unique compositions from the depths of the ages Sidney Bechet: who had this technique and this power before him? Earl Bostic: an alien player who chose popular music but educated many sax stars Gary Thomas: crushing sound and sci fi compositions, the complete package Pharoah Sanders after Coltrane: left to himself, Sanders was capable of some of the most satisfying music ever to come out of a saxophone. Maceo Parker: powerful sound and flawless sense of rhythm, a model of joy and cheerfulness that has shaped RnB since the 70's David Sanborn: who can boast of having created the sound of modern pop alto sax with such magnificent highs? Steve Coleman: when he doesn't get lost in endless improvisations, he's a magnificent player who knows his BIRD from top to toe, coupled with a very powerful conceptualist Arthur Blythe: a sound that attracts the listener like a magnet Eric Dolphy: so individualistic and personal that no one has ever been able to imitate his tone and playing Jim Pepper: should be canonized just for his album Comin' and Goin'

These records you reviewed for Record Store Day don't seem to be at Criminal Records at Little 5 Points. What the hell is going on? Where do i purchase, if not here in Atlanta? This is my first attempt at trying to buy anything on Record Store Day. Usually buy from Acoustic Sounds.

They should have gotten some of the Elemental / Resonance stuff in unless they just chose not to order any. It’s up to individual stores. I’m in line at Wax N Facts around the corner if you want me to try and grab something

Thanks for asking, it's appreciated. My God that store doesn't open until 1 pm, right? I guess they will pop up on Acoustic Sounds eventually. I've purchased a few Record Store Day items from them so I assume the records aren't all sold nationwide and the online store get the remaining. I was talking to this at Criminal Records and he said I didn't have to actually come to the store to get the items I wanted. I was told to just get online and order so i created my wishlist. It's still showing unavailable 9:51am. I work at night so just getting off from work at 8am. I was actually trying to order the Mal Waldon/ Steve Lacy. Also Nat King Cole: Live At The Blue Note Chicago. Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer: But Who's Gonna Play The Melody. I appreciate the offer but I'll wait and see if they arrive later on Acoustic Sounds or Elusive Disc. Enjoy your shopping and have a great weekend. Please review anything new you picked up at the store. I enjoy your reviews immensely.
