As good as this solo is it cannot compare with absolute perfect masterpiece created by Sonny Stitt on "Sonny Side Up". IMO.

Well done. Didn’t know about this solo before now. A classic Stitt solo.

This is my favorite song but I'd never heard/seen this particular solo. Bears a little resemblance to the one he played on Sonny Side Up but a bit more intense. I love it! Thanks for sharing.

I've also been really into his collaborations with Gene Ammons lately. Boss Tenors (1961) and Boss Tenors in Orbit (1957) are a couple of my favorites, but there are several other sessions/albums. Most of them are mastered with the tenors panned to separate sides, so headphones or spatially separated L/R speakers are a must!

It’s good to see some attention paid to Stitt and indirectly Ammons. They were giants in their part of the jazz scene.

Amazing talent. So much fun to listen to. I was fortunate to get to hear him play with his organ trio in a small club in Chicago when I was in high school. On same gig, saw him do the “Sax Battle” with Gene “Jug” Ammons. Jug was more emotional and from the heart but also a great player.

Thanks for sharing. From a theoretical point of view, a close study of this solo showed me how much Sonny incorporated leading tones to the 3rd, 5th, and 7th of the lead sheet chords in a smooth chromatic flow. For example, in an E7 chord (E-G#-B-D), he might incorporate a leading tone to G# (i.e., enharmonically G - the flat third), leading tone to B (Bb - the flat fifth), or leading tone to the 7th -D (i.e., C#) or in most cases, playing the the leading tone to the tonic, D# (which makes the chord a major 7th chord rather than a dominant 7th chord). This opens up all kinds of improvisation possibilities. Genius! I'm going to try and incorporate this more in my solos by just not concentrating on the chord quality so much but whatever the possibilities are of multiple scales from the root.

you can use a lot of chromatic approaches to spice up the solo - he did it in a very musical way for sure

Tastefully quoting Prez' outro to "Sometimes I'm Happy" at the outset of the first bridge, which I believe to be itself a quote. To me it sounds like quoting "I'd do most anything for you" but I've read in some biography of Prez that it actually was a song named "I lost my girl" or something of that sort. Never have found said song or the correct title tho.
