I had one of these switches for my electric car home charger rated at 16A. After about 4 months of use, one night I discovered the shell had deformed due to heat stress and there was a very strong burning smell. I cut the fuse at the main board and got rid of it. Probably not the smartest thing I have done, to run the switch at max load over a long period, and I consider myself very lucky. At lower running currents, they are very useful.

I don't know at some point there might have been a malfunction. I checked that the track has burnt and fuse blown. Track is ok though when checked through multimeter. Hello John, I have bought this switch, but I am very nervous about using it as the terminals are just spring loaded which seems a bit dodgy for 15 A (I am using it on an immersion heater), what do you think? I know there is a stress relief plate but this is also very flimsy holding all conductors with just one small screw into the plastic housing. Would you be confident using it for a 15A load??

@John Since you did the stress test. Do you think this device would handle 4 T12 Ballast's, because I would like to attach it to my florescent fixtures. The light wattage as a total is 320 watts, but I'm unsure of the ballast amperage.
@jwflame6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will be fine - 320 watts is only about 1.4 amps, and even allowing for double as they are fluorescents, that's still only about 3A, far less than the 16 it is rated for.

Can this work with a U.S. 240 volt 3 prong outlet and if so how should it be wired? The main issue I see is that U.S. 240s are synthesized from two 120 volt circuits so two of the prongs are "hot" where the third is used as both ground and neutral.

helliko2 sonoff for USA exist. For non-DIY people you can buy one with US male plug in / US female plug off. IMHO should 120V lines use different connectors as for 240V lines! CEE system exists! Different cable code too!

Hi John - and thanks for the video. I have a question for you (or any electrical boffin) : you mention an inductive load like the vacuum cleaner, has that initial spike which is over load. If you're running on and off an inductive load (and thus, briefly overloading) - do you think this could be an issue?
@ColinRichardson7 жыл бұрын
John: Do you know if there are sockets out there that can show a "load level" of what is plugged into it? Or even one that could beep if it goes above 13amps for say 2 seconds (so we can ignore the spike) ??

Hi John, I would like to connect my air conditioner on Sonoff Dual 16A (10A/gang). Do you think that is safe if I split the energy in each gang? And turn on/off both channels at the same time?
@jwflame6 жыл бұрын
No, if you use both channels for the same load, one of them will be damaged, as even if switched at the same time, they are still two separate relays, and one will close and open fractionally before another one, so most of the load will end up on one of the contacts. You need a device which is rated to the whole load with only one contact / gang.

Hi John Very good an informative youtube, thank you. I was very interested why a ceramic fuse of 20 amp was used as you rightly pointed out. The answer became apparent when I read the features and specs of the device from the manufacturer. The reason is that you can with the software, mobile eWeLink app, specify that you want cut out at certain value of amps, volts etc. This would really be great if you could repeat the test after having set some of these max allowed values in the app for the device. Many thanks for the advice though.
@Mandrag0ras3 жыл бұрын
What ever you do with the software, it cannot improve the limitations of the hardware. The relay, as said in another video, is rated for 16A of resistive load and the second rating of 10A @ 250 Vac is probably for inductive loads. It's possible that other components of the device have the same rating/limits. Keep in mind that the fat track of copper and solder on the pcb reached 80+ degrees C at full load, so imagine what's gonna happen at the spring terminals at full load over an extended period of time. So, I don't believe exceeding the rating of 16A would be a good idea.
@Debraj19785 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed review unlike others, who are least aware of the limits of this device. Other review just focus on the android app and wifi setting. Considering you were at a low ambient (8 deg C) and then the temperature raised to 59 deg C, that is 50 deg c rise. If I do the same in India, where ambient is around 35 deg C, will this rise cause a concern?

When we get out of the EU will we get our high power vacuums back?
@ColinRichardson7 жыл бұрын
Depends if you want High powered, but inefficient (eg has suction power of 6) or Low powered but efficient (eg has suction power of 8). The point of the EU law is having efficiency over wasteful.. There are 1.0 litre ECO cars that are more powerful than 3 litre engines of the olden days.. I know which one I would prefer... Once all the trash brands that are relying on wasting high amount of energy to "keep up" have vanished.. and you have all innovation wars of "what's the most powerful suction we can get with 900watts" then decide if you want to go back to the cheap brands that cause your electricity bill to go through the roof for no reason other than, they are crap at making vacuums.
@stefantrethan7 жыл бұрын
Better than the unrealistic power ratings on vacuum cleaners and air compressors in the US that well exceed the power capability of the outlet... The idea is that they are forced to get more efficient. I do not like bans like this, but would have liked a mandatory suction rating instead, that accounted for real world conditions. For example measure the vacuum pressure with a standardized orifice after sucking up 1/2 kg of flour or something. As it was buyers just went for the highest power rating, or the one that made the most noise, which obviously did not encourage improvement.

Hi John, thanks for the informative video. I am intending to use one of these switches for my water heater that is rated max 3000W. Please folks don't connect heaters to these things, the manufacturers tell you not to do it and heaters should never be left unattended, especially the cheap 2KW fan heaters (which like to turn into a ball of melted plastic when the fans fail), but equally i've had some pretty expensive space heaters that have failed quite spectacularly too.
