I wasn’t expecting my channel to turn into the Sonos channel, but shortly after posting my Sonos One review video Sonos released Airplay 2 support. This is a quick follow up to walk through the Sonos One airplay support update process and how to setup Sonos with Apple HomeKit, as well as my experiences with it over the past week or so.

*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*

This channel is going to be big. It has very high quality content, great reviews and the perfect setup. The colors in the background of your videos are perfect. The little jokes that are spread throughout the video make this awesome to watch. Matt, I hope the best for your channel in the future, I know you will get to 100k in no time. P.S. maybe you should set up a paypal me donation link so people can donate money to help support the future gadgets and development on this channel. Love from Michigan

Dear Matt, until now you helped me a lot to learn about Sonos. Thanks for that! I have a few questions and I hope that you can answer them. I want to buy Sonos speakers for watching movies and play my music collection. 1.) If I want to setup a 5.1 with Playbar, 2 Sonos ones and a sub for a 32m2 living room. Is that ok? 2.) When I want to play my music on these speakers together ( playbar, 2xones and a sub) is then the sound quality great and rich for a 32 m2 living room? 3) I have lots of mp3 on my IMac and iPhone. Not purchased with Spotify or Apple Music. It’s around 5000 songs that I collected from my youth. Is it possible to AirPlay these songs to my 5.1 installation? I just want to say that your channel is great and I just subscribed. Greets

Thanks, Alex! That's a pretty big room, but the Playbar combined with some Sonos ones and sub should really fill the space. It should work nicely for movies and TV for sure. On your second question, keep in mind that you could add another Sonos one, Play 5, etc. further fill it out. I'd be really surprised if you had too though. But if this is a great room (like a living room straight into a kitchen), you could drop a Play 5 or something in the kitchen end of the room later. Then when you listen to music, just group up the 5.1 setup with the Play 5. That's kind of the beauty of the Sonos system. It can grow and expand with you. And on #3, yep! You'll be able to airplay from your phone any audio source you want to the 5.1 setup. The 5.1 setup will show up as a single Airplay speaker within the iPhone's airplay menu.

One thing to note, if you add Sonos One’s as surround speakers to a Playbar, they will NOT allow you to use airplay (tried and tested, unfortunately...). Apparently whatever device is connected to the TV is the master device, and if that does not support airplay adding airplay compatible speakers as surrounds will not help... Oh, and the first version of Play:5 speakers also don’t support airplay (again, learned through experience as I have one), it’s only the revised Play:5s that have the feature.

Nope, this is absolutely WRONG. I've had several updates since 2018 and at NO TIME has my iPad EVER shown ANY of my SONOS speakers as Airplay compatible. In my SONOS app under System/Settings there is an AirPlay section. When I go there, it says I have NO AirPlay Compatible devices even though I've got a Generation 5 iPad with AirPlay. I've also NEVER experience SONOS updates going "without a hitch". Usually the software forgets one or more of my rooms and I have to power speakers on and off, or restart the app several times before it finally gets its shit together.

I’m looking into a Sonos because I have a HomePod and a Bose SoundTouch 30. Both are Airplay speakers of course but they both don’t work. The Bose is just slow and annoying. The music pauses every time I click do something on my iPhone. Like simply navigating through Apple Music, every swipe and tap I do just makes the music pause for a split second. And the HomePod.... horrible reliability. The stereo pairing doesn’t work half the time, the tap and hold to talk to Siri doesn’t work, the connection to it gets lost just like typically Bluetooth... and the point of airplay is to ensure great connectivity lol. I’m still searching for a speaker that works.

Great video.... trying to decide on Homepod or Sonos. Have yet to judge the sound but will do so in an Apple Store. Sound is of greatest concern to me....but that has to be balanced against budget. A Stereo pair of Homepods is big bucks. But putting the same into Sonos gives expandable options that Apple just doesn’t have. I believe that following the Beam going on sale, it won’t be long before the Playbar gets a refresh and then Sonos will offer a great system that includes surround sound for my living room and big TV. Do you have the Play 5’s that support AirPlay 2 ? I hope they sound as good as the HomePod. My musical taste is nothing eclectic or esoteric. Some Pop, Rock and due to my parents... 60’s and 70’ bands and solo artists. Some examples of songs you love listening to on your Sonos speakers would be useful. BTW your presentation, clear speech and relaxed manner is great. Good luck with the channel, you got another subscriber.

I don’t own any Play 5’s, but I would put them on par with the HomePod for room filling quality sound. HomePod might still get the quality edge, but not by much. One thing to keep in mind is that HomePod and Sonos One/Play 5/Beam all play nice together with Airplay 2. Thanks for the sub!

Great content, Matt. I agree the Airplay 2 support is surprisingly well done here. I'm so used to vaporware from other companies that it was a nice surprise when Sonos pulled through with adding this feature. It was almost enough for me to keep my Sonos in the mix, but not quite. I'd like to return to Sonos someday (the audio is great), if they can work out the kinks with the rest of the Alexa ecosystem. Definitely sub'd.

Great video! How does the lock screen controls/playback on IPhone work with the new update? I’ve heard you no longer have lock screen controls with the update to Airplay 2 and Sonos 9.0. (I currently don’t own any Sonos but am wanting to get some). But is that only when you are using the Sonos Controller app? I use Apple Music and play music directly from the music app from Apple. Basically I just want to know if I play music from the Apple Music app (not through the Sonos controller app), do I still have lock screen playback/controls (changing songs and volume on screen as well as using the hard buttons on the side)? If you could check this, that would be great. Thanks.

Because of Airplay you can select Sonos speakers as your audio output from a Mac (same for iPad and iPhone). Once you've selected your speaker, it'll play any audio source ... so KZbin videos, iTunes movies, music, etc. All the audio will play through that selected speaker.

Great video, thanks for this! Currently an iTunes Match subscriber but do not have Apple Music. I’m trying to decide between the Sonos One end HomePod. Does the Sonos app support iTunes Match directly, or would I have to use Airplay? I read somewhere that if you also install the Sonos desktop app on your computer where your physical iTunes match files are stored, you can then access the files through the Sonos app via the speakers rather than having to use Airplay. Any experience with this?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I do have experience with this as I'm an iTunes Match subscriber too without Apple Music. Same exact boat. If you're using the Sonos app on your iPhone or iPad, it will only see music that is on that physical device. If it's not downloaded, Sonos won't see it. However, now that the Sonos One, Beam, Play 5 second gen have built in Airplay support it doesn't matter. I just use the Music app on my iPhone and iPad and sling music to any or all of my Sonos speakers directly. I barely use the Sonos app at all on my devices anymore. The Sonos controller app on my Mac doesn't see my iTunes library at all, so that's not something I've ever been able to use. That app allows you to start streams from other services or change the mix of speakers that are playing audio, but doesn't seem to tap into your Macs iTunes library (strange). If you have a Mac though, you can use Airplay from iTunes. Another thing to consider is setting up a Plex server (it's free) on you computer and using that to serve up your full library. Plex has built in support on Sonos, so you can use that as a way to augment iTunes Match.

Overall, airplay 2 has been huge for my Sonos. But not flawless. Multiple apps I use are not compatible with AirPlay, most notably Yahoo Sports which I use to watch NFL on my iPad while I'm mobile around the house. I’ve been pretty happy with the addition of AirPlay. I initially wanted it so I could seamlessly switch from phone to speakers when listening to a podcast although in the time it took for AirPlay 2 to be deployed I discovered Pocket Casts which essentially does what I wanted but through the Sonos app. Still it’s nice to be able to throw audio from a web page or elsewhere to the speakers. I understand the processing limitations of the older Sonos speakers and for that reason I am even more impressed at the lengths they went to provide some support for them. It’s a rare tech company that does not embrace planned obsolescence. So, what else are we going to hear about?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There aren’t many companies that stand behind their products like this. As for what’s next for the channel, I have plans for more tech product reviews, advanced how to’s for home automation (including more on Sonos, Alexa, etc.), a Tesla Model 3 review and thoughts of going fully electric (when I finally get mine), and more. I’m still feeling my way around the channel, but I’m a big believer in tech making people’s life better and going green. I think a lot of my content will revolve around one or both of those ideas.

Hi, do you know if you can control the sonos speakers with homepod? Im getting a homepod and i want more speakers around the house, and it would be nice if it can be linked. I thought about sonos as speakers for the tv and stuff, so i dont need apple tv. But i want to play music around the house with homepod so i dont need to use my iphone every time. Just like with homepods that you ask them to play on all the speakers, but then with only 1 homepod and more other speakers.

@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
I just picked up a HomePod and still have some testing to do with it, but I believe you can control the Sonos speakers (sort of). If the Sonos speakers support Airplay 2, like the Sonos Ones or Beam, you should in theory be able to tell the HomePod to play something on those speakers as well. But I have to test that out (traveling now) when I’m back with my HomePod.

Undecided with Matt Ferrell I got a message from sonos; At present you can't control Sonos using Siri in the Homepod, however we are planning on adding support for voice assistants like Siri as we did for Alexa a year ago. Google Assistant is next on our list expected to be released next year, and I'm confident that Siri will be added in the near future too. For the time being, you can use the Siri in your iPhone, iPad or Mac to choose what plays on Sonos, if you use one of our Airplay 2 compatible speakers. Airplay is currently supported on the Beam, One, Playbase and Play:5 gen 2. You can also connect Sonos with your TV, and for this you would need on of our soundbars. We have three, the Playbar, Playbase and Beam. The first two are our full sized soundbars, whereas the Beam is a new offering from us. It's a smaller alternative, but has some new features such as in-built Alexa voice control. Once you've added this, you can add speakers to create a home theatre.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
Well, their response is technically accurate. You can't use Siri to control Sonos and the Sonos features, but you can use Siri from the HomePod to control an Airplay 2 speaker like any other Airplay device. I just ran some experiments and was able to start playing a song on the HomePod and then transfer it to my Sonos One in the Kitchen. Or start playing a song directly on the kitchen speaker. While talking to the HomePod I could start and stop the music in the kitchen, change the song, etc. You just have to add the name of the speaker to each Siri command. While I was in the kitchen I was able to use Alexa to pause and resume and skip to the next track. That's basically what I thought would work, and I'm happy to see that it did. Not as nice as having Siri on the Sonos One itself, but nice that the HomePod sees those speakers as just another playable device because of Airplay. One oddity is that I haven't been able to get the same thing working on the bedroom Sonos One yet. Not sure why, but Siri just responds that she can't find a speaker named Bedroom. I think it has something to do with my device names in there and need to do some more sleuthing.

It works great, but to a point. You can use Siri on the HomePod to start playing music on any airplay speaker you want, like a Sonos One in another room. But Siri doesn’t work directly on the Sonos itself. When you’re in the other room, you can use Alexa on the Sonos to then play, pause, skip, control volume directly on that specific Sonos ... even though it’s getting the music streamed to it via Siri/Airplay.

Potentially, but I can't speak to how well it stays connected over time. I'm able to play audio from any of my Apple TVs to one or more of my Sonos speakers over AirPlay. A little confused as I want to buy my parents a speaker that they can use their voice to play Apple Music (but don’t want home pod). With the sonos one, can they say things around their phone like “hey Siri play my favourites on the sonos” ? Annoying that Alexa and Apple Music aren’t integrated, otherwise the sonos one with Alexa would be a no brainer cause then we could just talk to the speaker itself to play Apple Music. I’m hoping an easy compromise would be speaking to iPhone or iPad (via hey Siri) to control music on the sonos?

Thanks! The newest Sonos speakers (Sonos One, Sonos Beam, and 2nd gen Sonos Play 5) all support Airplay 2, so there's no bluetooth connection at all. The Sonos speakers will just show up as an available Airplay device automatically on their iPhones and iPads. They just have to be on the same wifi network as the speakers. You'll have to go through a one time setup to add the speakers to Apple's Homekit, which enables Siri control. Once you've done that, there's no connection or reconnection rigamarole they'd have to go through. It will all just work going forward. Just ask Siri to play X on whatever speaker name you gave the Sonos in Apple's Homekit.

I legit hunted for this because I remembered your last Sonos video. I’m thinking of picking up an Apple TV 4K tonight since my partner and I got PS Vue... Any idea how well airplay 2 works with Apple TV and watching video?

Glad you found me again! I have both the 4K and non-4k versions of the Apple TV and they work great for Airplay 2. If you’re listening to music, you can sling music to them just like any other Airplay 2 Speaker (alone or as a part of a group in sync). Slinging video from your iPhone or iPad works great as well, but keep in mind that your phone or tablet is still the device processing and controlling the video, so you can’t switch to another app. As for PlayStation Vue, the Apple TV app for that is pretty good, but I only used it for a few weeks while I tried the service out.

Undecided with Matt Ferrell thanks for the reply! We picked one up and I love it already! Still figuring out how it works and whatnot but just set it up quick to watch tv for a bit without diving in. But using two Sonos One speakers via Airplay 2 and streaming a few episodes of different shows through PS Vue worked wonderfully although the volume had to be turned up quite a bit, probably due to the fact they are quite small to have to be so heavily relied on, but for a small space and all the versatility... 100% worth it to me.

That’s great to hear! Hope you enjoy the setup ... and keep us updated on how it goes as you dig in more. Also curious how you like PlayStation Vue.

Sadly, you can't. It's either out of your device or the speaker/speakers, but not both.

Can u ask Sonos one to play Apple Music by voice ?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
Not yet. You can play Apple Music through the Sonos app to the speaker, but Sonos/Alexa/Apple Music integration is still being worked on. Last update I heard about it was in December (www.trustedreviews.com/news/apple-music-alexa-sonos-one-3638783).

Great video I have 6 sonos play 1 , so I would only have to get the new play one and they all will work with airplay
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but with limitations. You can't play directly to the Play 1's in your house. You'd have to play to the new speaker, like a Play 5 or Sonos One, and group the Play 1's with that. It's roundabout, but works.

Great channel man. I have a Play 5 and Play 1 along with a homepod. I like the homepod and think it is probably a better speaker than the play 1, but think if I am going to expand it will be more with Sonos than anymore apple speakers.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Interesting. Do you think you’d expand more with HomePod if Siri was better and Apple offered a wider range of speakers, sizes, and prices?
@mattturner8335
@mattturner8335 6 жыл бұрын
Undecided with Matt Ferrell probably not. Due to Sonos looking like they will continue to offer the best cross platform products. And if spotify offers lossless streaming before apple then i would go back to Spotify. Also, i worry that at the rate apple brings out new generations, the homepod could not be relevant as long as a sonos product. Speakers should last years, if not decades!
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that products should last a long time. One thing I find fascinating about all of these smart speakers is how they can actually get better over time with a simple software update.

Undecided with Matt Ferrell the normal.person will not hear a difference in sound quality if they only hear one speaker and have nothing to compare it to. Plus to pay so much just to have a speaker for background music for a kitchen the sonos play 1 is much cheaper and does the same thing. Just airplay two missing

Can the Playbar use AirPlay?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 6 жыл бұрын
Not directly, but if you have any Airplay compatible Sonos speakers in the house, like the Sonos One, Beam, Play 5 (2nd gen), you can group the Playbar with one of those speakers to use Airplay. For instance, if you used a couple of Sonos One speakers as surround sound with the Playbar, you’d be able to use Airplay then.
