like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzbin.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

FYI, you can also use the network port on your speaker to bridge another device in a different part of your house. E.g. I use my playbar to feed my XBox with internet for online gaming(Works like a champ)

Great video, explains the setup well. I understand very recently that the bridge is no longer required unless you have poor wifi signal in your home. I will be purchasing the Play 3 to replace my Bose Soundock Airplay which quite frankly is a pain to use. I hope that streaming doesn't crack up / skip the same way my airplay device does :(

Great video tutorial on the basics- I wanted to clarify a few things as I've used and implemented sons in client setups for many years. Just to clarify- (some of this has been mentioned by others) Any Sonos can be a solo device as long as the first device is connected to the network via ethernet (the bridge is the cheapest to do this with) Sonos creates its own wifi network separate from yours that each device accesses and the sons apps do as well- apps that run the remote app must still be on the same wifi network that your router is transmitting (you must be on the same VLan) The Sonos device itself is sourcing the music from the web if you choose a network based source like pandora or lastfm, spotify) If you specifically say to play music from your device (play from my iTunes on my phone for instance) and you leave the wifi network the music will stop. If you choose to play music on one of your computers in house and you leave the house- it will continue to play. You can even set up an ad-hoc network with an airport express (with no internet connection) and play music from your computer or phone within the system. (Say you go on vacation in someplace and the room has no internet- no problem) The system calculates the distance of each speaker form each other to maintain audio synchronization- whether your house is 1000sq ft or 10,000 sq ft.

About 2 years ago I got a Bridge, a Play:5 and a Playbar. I've got the Playbar to work as a speaker for the TV in my bedroom, but it's never played music or worked off the App. Instead, I control the volume with my TV remote control. Mr. Ross is correct about the solid build of these products. My Play:5 ($470) works fine as a doorstop. Just buy a JBL or Beats bluetooth speaker; they work.

Can I plug the bridge into a Cat5 wall plug as oppposed to the router directly? My router is in the basement, and I want to install 2 speakers in the kitchen on the main floor.

+Robert Mulligan Yep. It doesn't need to go directly through the router. You just need the signal, and if it's coming through the wall plug then you're good. I used to have my router in the basement and I ran all of it up through the wall outlets with no issue with routers and extenders.

Also another really cool feature is that when you have a *BRIDGE* plugged in to a router you can actually plug any device into any of the *SONOS* Speaker(s)' Ethernet port(s) and the device will connect through *SONOSnet.* The *SONOSnet* signal is repeated by every speaker in the system so if you have a SONOS speaker in a far part of the house the has weak WiFi (but the SONOS Speaker has a decent *SONOSnet* connection) then you can plug a WiFi Extender into the SONOS Speaker in the far area of the house.

I bought a Play 1 from Target before Christmas when they tossed in the bridge for a penny. I was impressed with the build quality and the apps ease of use. Set-up was easy and straight-forward. But the sound quality is outstanding. Way better than my stereo system I paid three times as much for. I will probably buy another Play 1 for the complete stereo effect and to play different songs at the same time.

+TheToastGod Easy to swap, there is a desktop controller for a computer (to stream your music), and you don't need the bridge anymore. I actually use the bridge as a "bridge" for other devices in the house now.

What battery? There is no battery on the sonos. It's wired to power. It also has no effect on your phone battery as the phone is only a remote control for sonos.

Deleted and re-installed the app. The display was different, it walked me [unsuccessfully] through steps to set up Sonos but it still looked nothing like the setup in this video. It wanted me to power up the Sonos (which entailed unplugging it and re-plugging it). Then it said I'd get a flashing white light for a minute (I did) that would turn into a flashing green light --I didn't get a green light, the white light just turned solid. After a couple more steps it wanted me to look for Sonos in my iPhone's Wifi, Sonos didn't show up among my choices of network. Then it wanted me to connect the ethernet cable; I did. Still couldn't get Sonos to connect. Yours, Mr. Ross, is the third "set up" video I've tried today. I'll try one more. So far, all three have been mostly about features and how to use features, with only brief instructions on setting the device up.

Jeff Zaun You configure it with your phone or computer, setting up your wireless password. It has a built-in wireless communication protocol for a first time setup (among other stuff). These SONOS are an amazing devices. I have a Play 3 myself and I am thinking about buying a Play 1. Also you don't need a bridge if you have more than one SONOS, like this guy has in the video. You can just add devices and they manage their sound network by itself.

You may have already found your solution +Ivan “Quetzalcoatl” B , but it's super easy. I just did this again (without the bridge) and the mobile app walks you through the whole process, which is like two steps. I do not use the bridge anymore and I actually have these speakers tied into a Smart Things smart home setup without issue. Still loving them!

To be honest, I think you'd be happy with a couple of play 1's that you can place throughout your house (or wherever you need them) for the party. Otherwise I'd go with a Play 5.

Great video Kevin! Answered a ton of my questions. I am remodeling my entire house and am looking for a up to date whole home audio setup. I really want to do Sonos but have one major concern that I'm having trouble finding an answer to. I see these speakers have a power cable. If one was to wall mount the speakers I don't see a way to really hide the power cable. In most areas it's against code to run a power cable behind a wall unless the cable is rated to do so. Any ideas?

I know that when we remodeled our basement that I had the electrician place wall plugs in various locations where we were going to have certain devices hanging on the walls (i.e. a wall mounted television, wall mounted electric fireplace, etc). Of course that may be a bit more cumbersome. Have you looked at the amp option? www.sonos.com/shop/products/connectamp This may be your solution and I know my brother-in-law has turned his existing hardwired setup into a Sonos ecosystem.

Great Video, was planning on using the play 1 at my wedding while everyone is enjoying the Champagne before the band arrives but have a question. If the location of the wedding doesn't have a wireless network can I still somehow create my own wireless network and play music through the speaker using my phone, ipad or mac? The play 1 doesn't have a "line in" either via a RCA/Audio jack, or direct ethernet. The Play 5 however does have a direct line in, but quite frankly at that point, this particular use case could be filled by another (less expensive) set up. I have researched this question for you, and Sonos states that this would be a more complicated set up than what you may want to pursue.

***** You shouldn't need to work the Play:1 in. The Play:1 will be ready to crank up the volume as soon as you get it set up. The SONOS system doesn't natively support streaming directly from a PC (without it being plugged into a Play:5.) However you can add the music that you store on your PC through the SONOS App for PC/Mac and the only requirement is that the computer is on when playing music from the 'Music Library' & that you regularly hit 'Index Music Library' in the app (on any platform.)

I do not have the connect, but a family member does have the connect with amp. He has this connected to a set of wired passive speakers. If you already have a receiver (obviously with a built-in amp), then you only need the connect without the amp.

SONOS works on Android and iOS (mobile) and Mac and PC (Computer.) The Bose sound link lineup uses Bluetooth so it should work on android. If you haven't decided yet, any speaker labelled "Bluetooth" will work with android.

Harry Trejo No, there shouldn't be any problems... That is as long as you're not throwing it around ;) All of the settings will be saved and you shouldn't have any issues with having to reset a connection to the wifi. I occasionally move these around for certain occasions. It's a great piece of tech.

I think there's some confusion over where the Sonos plays the music from here. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure your phone is acting as a means of giving the Sonos commands. So when you play a playlist it's telling the Sonos to stream that music from your server / the internet. It's not streaming it from your phone to the Sonos, so not playing through the mobile data network as you mentioned. You could turn off your phone and it will continue to play.

The speakers themselves receive the music directly from streaming services, the app is only a remote control. That way there are no interruptions and you do not have to be in the house. Your phone doesn't even have to be turned on! Its very cool.

Yes, you are right. The Review is wrong with regard to this. I tested it myself. Start streaming to sonos, then power off your iPhone and music will not stop. So it has nothing to do with his wife's carrier's 4G network. The Sonos players are computers themselves. Once you tell it to start streaming music, the system internally stream from the source you specify such as pandora. It will not stop until your home network is cut off or until you push the stop button on the player or the sonos app. The phone does not even have to be on.

Is there a way to block someone from a speaker (play 1, 3, or 5). For example if i had one in my office and I don't want my kids/ wife to access to that speaker.

Anthony Altamirano In our personal use case (on the same account), we "un group" the speakers so that they then have the ability to play as individual speakers. So, let's say I'm streaming my music on Pandora upstairs, and my wife can stream her music (on another streaming account) on the speaker downstairs. They become independent of each other and are streaming different services independently on each speaker. I haven't attempted to see if there's a "lock out" function per se, but you'd have to be intentional to regroup the speakers.

I understand all about the grouping and activating each speaker. i just wondered if my wife or daughter download the app and add speakers to their app if i could lock mine out so they wont be able to control it. But I suppose as long as they don't hit the pairing buttons on the speaker they wont have access to it. It will only show or allow only the speakers you are paired with.

Setting up the play 1's was extremely easy. The directions to do so are included in the box. You install the app first on a device. Then, you plug in a Play 1, hold down the buttons (as instructed in the pamphlet) and it will ask you if you want to pair the speaker to the bridge. Or, you can just push the button on the bridge and you'll get the same message for each speaker. It will ask you to label each speaker and also ask if you want Stereo vs. Mono (if they'll be together, or in separate rooms). It's seriously very easy to do.

Also, clarification - you don't need a bridge for each speaker. One bridge covers (I think) 32 sonos speakers.

Gus Leytte You no longer need a bridge. Sonos now has a WiFi only option that does not require a device wired to the router. Also if you have 2 Play 1's, you can configure them as a Stereo pair. The sum of the 2 together is greater than the 2 as separate units. So in a larger room this configuration is excellent !!

sonos speakers actually pull music directly through the internet with the cpu inside the units. ur sonos app is merely a remote that's why they are able to do the so called "multitasking" on ur phone. ur phone app is not the one that's playing music. sonos is awesome lol

Khalid Basil This will likely be up for debate here, and I can only speak from the perspective of a Sonos user. Honestly I feel that Sonos has a tremendous (room filling) sound and I've never been disappointed with the bass and/or the power it delivers. Still use these on the daily and love being able to play different genres in different rooms.

You use the sonos app. It can login to many 3rd party sources to play music or Internet radio. I have it connected to many streaming services and can access all my channels or playlists from within sonos controller app.

No, not at all. The bridge is unnecessary at this point. I'm still using these speakers, and they're completely wireless (without) the bridge.

Honestly it's a very full sound. I know several folks that have these mounted in their home theaters along with a play bar for the television. And, with the new Play 1's having Alexa and Airplay functionality, it just adds another option for streaming media directly to those speakers.

Sure thing. Just be mindful though (I forgot to mention, but did indicate in the video) that there's no aux in port on the play 1, but with a playbar or if you're streaming to the new play one speakers, you should be good. They've updated the bridge as well as some of the internals in these since I did this video. The Sonos app really helps to get this set up as far as streaming. Anyway, best of luck with whatever you decide.

Only difference is that the Play:1 effectively has 1 speaker, PLAY:3 has 3 and PLAY:5 has 5. (Hence the names)

Thanks for this review.. Just cancelled my sonos 1 purchase from amazon. Was under the impression that I could still use the speaker wirelessly, just couldn't use it too far from my router. Your video confirmed that that was incorrect. And the bridge is now £37/$62... so not willing to just spunk that, when everyone else got it for free. Bit annoying... Time to think it out again. Thanks

Maybe you should consider buying sonos now. They (as stated above) released an update so that you could use the system without a bridge. (Features like pairing a PLAYBAR with a SUB and/or two Play:_s still require a bridge, but one speaker will work fine without a bridge)

There are a few questions I missed answered in this review. If you could help answer I would appreciate it. Can I connect this to my windows 10 computer and use it liken any other speaker? If not, do you have a suggestion for a wireless speaker with really good sound that can be connected to my PC like a classical speaker?

The Sonos One has more capabilities since this review, but I honestly wouldn't suggest it as a wireless speaker for your PC. I would suggest something like the Audioengine A2+ (for the low profile) paired with the Audioengine B1 bluetooth music streaming device. The A5+ has bluetooth built into it, however the speaker has a much larger footprint. The Audioengine B1 can be paired with other "analog" speakers if you are already have some you'd like to use, but definitely dig into this option to see if it would fit your needs. Unfortunately the Audioengine speakers aren't suitable in the least. But I think I've found what I was looking for in the Libratone Zipp 2 so no worries. All the best :)

Yes, you can actually adjust the EQ for each room...from the app. This comes in handy based on what genre of music you're listening to since you can listen to different "stations" in different rooms simultaneously.

He was incorrect on that. This really needs to be clarified. The streaming music is being pulled from the Bridge that is connected to the Internet router. The app on the phone is merely the controller - just like your TV controller. With your tv the controller merely changes channels, but the channels are not coming through the controller to the TV - it's coming directly from your router or cable service. Same thing here...the whole reason you need the bridge. You can run music to Sonos speaker from just your phone. It has to be connected to the internet. In addition you can't use the Sonos app to listen to music on your phone. Hope this clarifies that one point. Great review otherwise.

You can use your sonos speaker as a bridge. If you use the ether net cable and plug it into your modem it will control all the other speakers through the one that is plugged into the net... so you don't really have to buy the bridge if this application will work for you.

PLAYBARs can be paired with a SUB and two Play:1s or Play:3s to make a 5.1 surround sound system, (or a PLAYBAR and sub for 3.1 and PLAYBAR and two Play:1s or Play:3s for 5.0 surround sound)

SONOS devices such as the PLAY:5 , CONNECT and CONNECT:AMP have an audio in cable (e.g. Headphone cable) and the Playbar has an optical audio input (Works with TVs.) The Play:1 and Play:3 have no external inputs.

Might want to take another look at what is going on "behind" the scenes. If I start streaming streaming say Google music, Amazon music, Apple music, Pandora (you get the idea). As long as that Playlist is, it will continue to play until someone stops/pauses or changes the music. it doesn't switch to the person's broadband connection to stream, it goes to the source. The ONLY way that it MIGHT switch to pulling it broadband from like your phone is if you were playing music PHYSICALLY on your phone. A way to prove that it is pulling DIRECTLY from the streaming services l I keep I mentioned is, start streaming the music from a service; now take that battery out (don't power down, pull the battery so it's INSTANT. You'll see that it continues to play. Also, something you didn't mention, the Sonos system regardless of the # (up to its max) of speakers and playing different music on each, it will only take one "channel" of your network. This is because Sonos creates it's OWN network of WIFI.
