I think that's exactly the reason he's doing it solo. While Mark has fun goofing around with the boys, he also wants to play the game. No offense to Bob and Wade but they were never gonna finish the game together, which I think was Mark's ultimate goal.

in case anybody is curious, press G to holster things (or whatever your drop button is), and the shark only spawns after you swim out to the raft. If you shoot the shark once while it's opposite the island, it'll swim away from the raft, giving you the space to swim back to shore
