The Sony 18-105 f4 lens is a pretty awesome lens. It serves many purposes but with such a huge focal range and a low price it had to have a drawback and unfortunately, in this review, that was the minimum aperture of only F/4. I bought it for traveling last year, If I'm honest. Cause I only want my a6100 and one lens that covers all from wide to kinda telephoto (in my camera bag when I'm on a go)... so, for me, 18-105 is actually nice.

I have an Olympus 12-100 F4 on my BMPCC4K, and the bokeh gets really nice at around 50MM, and it's plain butter at 70mm and longer. I suspect the Sony 18-105 will provide similar results because I'll just keep moving closer to my subject :-) Thinking of getting the A6400 and 18-105 for a specialized project, which is why I'm here 3 years later as a random new subscriber whose been going through your videos like they're training manuals. @@Slayseal It's hard to say because sharpness is dependent on taste, preference, and lighting situation, unless it's so obviously too sharp or too soft that even a random person could point it out. I'm still exploring the lens and in no way would I be able to write a comprehensive review at this point, particularly regarding sharpness. So I guess my comment serves no actual purpose and doesn't help you! But look it at it this way: you can always add a touch of sharpening (or softening) in post, 18-105mm is such a convenient and versatile range, it's a great price, and you can always send it back if it doesn't work for you. So far I've been very happy with the lens and would recommend it to people who do their own post work and can massage the images to their liking.

I have bought this lens. From reviews it appears a master of a few areas including video work. It is a little soft from 18-50mm in image quality, at least, until you hit an apparent contradiction from 70mm onwards: it becomes tack sharp, even at f4. Good portrait lens. I thought about the Tamron 17-70, but the price, the power zoom, the extra reach and the compromise of at least maintaining f4 swayed me to get this lens.

I have the 35mm already and I'm thinking of getting a zoom telephoto lens to shoot closer and also further object instead of just getting stuck at 35mm. I have been considering this 18 to 105 lens for a while now. Its a Sony G lens and also better build quality and more professional compare to the zoom out barrel from 135mm which is just lame and will affect my gimbal stability while taking videos.

If I am doing more travel videos, what lens should I buy for a wider view? or is 18-105 actually a good choice? Cause when you are traveling you don't want to bring so many lenses and change them frequently. Still struggling.

Youre thinking too much haha honestly with that 35mm you can probably film everything. Its all about getting creative, but if you want more options then yeah, I would get the 18-105 because you would have so much more variety in your shots. From there youll see what lens you might need after using the 18-105. The 18-105 f4 for wide shots and some tight shots will work and having that 35mm with the 1.8 can get some great cinematic broll. Great video man, I’m having a tough time deciding if I want this camera or the a6500, I want to shoot photos but also a lot of video aswell, the only thing I’m stuck on is that the Sony a6500 can film up to 4K 60fps and the a6400 cannot, I’m getting the Sony 18-105mm lens for sure unless you think another one is better

The a6500 does not shoot 4k 60. I have the a7iii and that full frame camera doesn’t even offer it. It does have ibis, but for the price difference you might as well get an a6600 or the a6400 with a gimbal which would be more versatile. The 18-105 is perfect if its your first lens. This way you see what youre shooting at more. 🤙🏼 goodluck

Itll do a great job man especially if theres 2 people in the podcast. The aperture of f4 will have both in focus. I would try and seperate as far as possible from the background to make more bokeh and the lens closer to you. You got lights already? I used cheap ebay lights here there the same soft box on amazon but placed an additional diffuser on it. I only used one though to leave some shadows in my face. 🤙🏼

And I’m working with about 4 feet of separation from the background for the depth, I guess if I reallly need to I can push a little further away, and yes I do! I invested in some key lights fill lights and hair lights. I also have some dimming led lights for the background shots to add the motivation on the hair lights. Sound about right?

18-105, then see what you like. If you shoot more wide then 16mm 1.4. If you want more portraits then 35mm, 50mm, or my favorite portrait lens 85mm 1.8

I have Sigma's 16 and 30 and Sony's 50 and the kit lens 18-135, that I try not to use. I mainly shoot photography but want to try out making short films. So should I stick to my primes or try out the 18-105?

Just start with what you have, after filming a bot youll know what you need. I filmed almost everything on a 24mm. Now I mostly use my 16mm for youtube stuff. I rarely used that 18-105 because I had a lot of primes that opened to 1.8

Dara Tsinzova I would probably just go with the 18-105. If you were shooting some wildlife I would probably go with the 18-135 for the extra zoom

I'd go for the 18-105 for the reasons that they are similarly sharp so let's take that out of the consideration ... 1. 105 is cheaper than the 135. 2. 105 is much better built and feels premium than the 135 3. On aps-c sensor every stop of light is important since no matter how good they say it is, aps-c noise ll always be a thing. 4. Doesn't extend out, and better for smooth videos (zoom in and out)

You could go with the sigma 16mm shoot in 4k and zoom in in post. This lens will work but you will need more light since its max aperture is f4, it will need more light than a lens that can open to 2.8. Hope this helps

Yes it does! It is a croped sensor lens so image quality should be similiar if not the same.

I would because of the OSS so a slight better footage handheld. Also the variety of focal lengths. I wouldnt worry as much of the aperture of f4 because if you need to open wider you can switch to your other lenses. Good luck 🤙🏼

Hi Jesus... It appears that you don't understand fully concept of aperture... At 3:40 sec of your video you mentioned that you prefer to use "small aperture"... Well small aperture is a high f-stop number like f11 or f16... Small f-stop number like F1.4 or F1.8 that's Large aperture... Easy to remember method is large lens opening=large aperture and small lens opening=small aperture... Just wanted to clarify because at first I thought you like to shoot video at high f-stop which would be a very strange considering what you were saying.

Haha yeah I understand that, the majority of people I talk to, I tend to switch up the terms and not try to get too technical. As a beginner I remembering getting mixed up with that all the time so, yes, sometimes Ill call a small aperture referring to the number value. I dont try to get too technical as this is how I talk to my photog friends. Thats how I try to carry my youtube 😉 Hope I didnt mix up too many people I assume they understood what I meant. Especially since one can tell the difference of f1.8 to f12. I hope 😉🤙🏼

flip a coin lol At this point I would look if I have other fast glass that opens to 1.8 or so. I woul also take into consideration when I plan on getting a telephotos because that 105 can come in clutch sometimes. Sometimes it is like that just see what works best with the gear you own and what you want to do with that gear. Goodluck!

@@stillans6424 Yeah what I meant was buy a second lens with a wide aperture at least 1.8. I shoot most of my stuf with tamron 28-75 and dont have any issues. I dont think anyone makes a variable zoom lens at 1.8

It's funny, I have seen so many videos talking about how awesome this lens is, but I get such amazing results with my 16-50 kit lens, and so I'm not sure it makes sense for me to get this. Because at f4, it doesn't seem like it would be all that much better. And I also have the 55-210, which is also an awesome lens, but for low-light, I use the Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS lens, and that's an awesome lens, so I think I'm just going to suck it up, and get the Tamron 17-70, because at 2.8, it sounds like it makes so much more sense, and worth a couple of hundred dollars more. After watching your video, I think that sounds like a much better way to go. Thanks again, this really helps.

I use a cheap soft box light. Youll find them on amazon. I just place another diffuser in front of it. It is a newer foldable reflector/diffuser

It will make a crop on full frame since it is apsc. Not much noticeable distortion.

I bought sigma 30mm 1.4 as my first lens and tbh i consider this one but really if you sum up the cost of these two the most versatile one for all would be tamron 17-70 f 2.8 a bit more expemsive but still puts in a lot light and angles are decent

It is a great option as well but it depends what youre shooting. That extra 35mm of focal length can come really handy especially in a wedding scenario. There is no perfect lens for every scenario. If it works for you then get that one. ;)

No, it is a crop sensor lens. It will work with a full frame sony body, but will still make a crop on the sensor.

Im not sure on the weight capacity of that gimbal. I would search the weight of your entire set up and see how much weight that gimbal can handle. Really any gimbal with enough weight capacity will dot he job
