After a few years with Sony α5000 with kit lens 16-50 and some manual lenses, i finally upgraded to α6400 with 18-135mm mainly thanks to your reviews. I have to say 18-135 is light years better than kit lens 16-50mm in so many levels, and by far more suitable for so many different photographic scenarios! You can use it as telephoto for far details, wide open for scenery or landscape and even as great portrait lens with pretty nice bokeh! My next lens is a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and i think i will be covered for 99.9% of my usage. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

I received this as a kit lens with my a6600. For a kit lens, it is sharp, lightweight, and has a quality feel. It's a great travel lens. For street shooting, setting the lens to about 22mm gives sharp results if you have good light. Overall, if you are buying a Sony camera and this lens is part of a kit, get it. Otherwise, for APSC shooters, I would recommend the Sigma trio of prime lenses instead.

I rarely comment but I bought this lens today and it’s aweosme. I wanted a lighter zoom lens and it still has some weight. Love the photos. Clearly better than original kit lens. Other than weight the kit lens now has no use for me. Excellent review as always. You will not be disappointed with this lens if it’s in your future.

This needs to be bundled as a kit lens for the Sony 6000 series to really shine. That being said, this lens got a lot of hate when it was announced, but I actually think it's a solid release. For lots of people, this will be the only lens they'll need, and IQ seems superior to the 16-50. I jumped ship to Fuji before this was released, but the quality of this lens seems to be on par with Fuji kit lenses! EDIT: There are a lot of keepers in the montage, but 5:38 is a phenomenal image!!

I just bought a6700 with 16-50 kit lens. Didn’t get the 18-135 kit lens as i thought 16-50 is just perfect for compact travel photography. Will get a used 18-135 soon for simple events photoshoots

I recently sold the 18-105, keeping the 18-135. If my primary environment is outdoor or brightly lit indoor ill grab the 18-135 for its small size and weight. It was a great lens for a recent Grand Canyon trip. For lower light ill use the 18-50 f2.8.

I still feel the same that the 18-105 and 18-135 are roughly equivalent in terms of image quality. I currenlty own 6 lenses and consider this 18-135 the worst of the bunch. It's tempting to grab this lens but at the end of the day I'm disapointed. I would sell it but there isn't anything better out there to replace it. I'd like to see Sigma or Tamron come out with a 16-135 f2.8 or f4. Something sharper at least. I have the Sigma 18-50 2.8 which is wonderful but I still want more reach.

Bought the 18-135 with the a6400 body a few years ago. It's been a great lens to learn with. Now I'm slowly getting other lenses. Recently bought the Tamron 11-20 and now saving for a telephoto lens (probably the Sony 70-350). At some point, I will replace the 18-135 with something that is better in low light but I have really liked it and would recommend it as an all around, travel lens.

Hi Arthur, thanks for the video, I have this lens with the 6600 together with the 10-18 and the 70-350 in my APSC line up. I must say all does lenses are absolutely top also in comparison to my FF material. The 18-135 is definitely more than a replacement of the kit lens, it is a marvel and delivers a top image quality. The 6600 with al mentioned lenses represents a weight les than mij 200-600mm and covers a FF reach of 15 to 525mm not to forget the 18-135 has als a great macro quality compair to my 100-400. I find myself more and more leaving my FF suff at home.

Have both 16 - 50 and 55 - 210 E mounts, but this lens has that optimal range for those days when I don't wish to carry / keep changing lenses. Optics quality too is superior as compared to 55 - 210. Will get a pre-owned lens this week. Found it listed for $140 on webuy ;-)

I have bought this lens and I feel no regret, sharpness is very good and focus sharpness also perfect, all I need now to buy wide-angle lense, it will probably 7artisians or rokinon. The rest 18-135 will be enough... maybe in future for macro photography I may buy some mount apparatus but not urgent.

18-105 would be an excellent lens if not for power zoom. Maybe I am wrong and it will last a long time, but I strongly doubt it. Sony is right on the money with compact super zoom. I'll definitely be looking for one used on ebay. My 6500 is generally good up to 6400 ISO, so 5.6 on slow end is no issue.

The Canon 18-135 STM is $500, the Nikon (if buying new and not in a kit) is $460, the Fuji 18-135 is $800. Admittedly, all three are phenomenally better lenses, especially the Fuji which is the best superzoom ever made, but this isn't the most offensive price we've ever seen from Sony.

Sergio G cheapest new canon is 225gbp on ebay.uk, that is with around 20% vat and free postage. Sony is 425gbp + postage 16gbp. I love my sony but zoom lenses are just not very good and much to expensive in my opinion.

I love that you're more critical towards sony. Canon and nikon has 16/18-50mm f2.8, even a few options like from tamron, tokina, sigma (350 dollars for canon and 300 dollars for nikon btw) and whatever else option there is. Sony should really focus on affordable good glass. I hope 16/18-50mm f2.8 (if it'll ever come out) won't cost 600 dollars (like this outrageous one), because nikon and canon has options that cost about 300 dollars. And yeah... gaskets would've been nice. For 600 dollars this lens not only should have weather sealing, but also be made of swarovski crystals to justify it's value.

Hey everyone, I'm new to photography. Could somebody explain why would you want to buy the 18-105mm f4 vs the 18-135mm? In my eyes the 18-135 is more compact, and has variable f-stop(aperture). Anything I'm missing?

It is bekause of the aperture. When zoomed in completely (135mm) then you can only open the aperture to 5.6f with 18mm you can open it to 3.5f so with 105mm its maybe 4f like the 18-105mm so its the same i see your point.

Both quite good price for the money. The 18-135 wins in terms of compactness, weight saving, faster to zoom, and slightly sharper image (very slight). On the other hand, the 18-105 wins in terms of constant aperture (less tweaking settings), internal zooming, and smoother bokeh.

The 18-105 is a really good lens for the Sony system, it's even better than the Zeiss 16-70 in sharpness, although not wide open. It's almost certainly a better lens than the 18-135, albeit shorter in range and heavier. The best bang for your buck might be a metabones or sigma adapter and a Canon 24-105, though, which has f4, weather sealing, and is still sharper than the 18-105 for just a few hundred bucks more, and opens you up to the Canon lens system (which is way better than sony's).

Sergio G I have an adapter (admittedly a cheap commlite one) and I have a canon 24-105 f4L that I use on my ancient 5D mk2, the autofocus is terrible and unusable really, manually I can use it but to be honest the native lenses are the way to go :)

Adam Craig To give you an example of size differences in lenses, the kit lenses have a 49m filter size. The G lens has a 79m size. That’s a lot more glass, weight & length. The new lens is small, lightweight & has a filter size of only 55m

The 18-105 is not a "G Master"lens . It is designated as a "G" lens which in Sony parlance is a lesser quality lens ( ie. less expensive!) The two designation categories are distinct but can be confusing.

After seeing all the videos on this thing and your comparison I’m seeing that this thing is quite formidable. Aside from the vignetting issue @18mm which is not really an issue being that it’s 2018 and everyone uses lens correction in post. As long as it gives me the desired end result I’m not going to cry about little things. This lens is very sharp and that’s got to count for something. I got it as my kit lens though so I guess I saved a little money. But I will be getting some nice sigma primes for my faster lens needs tho!

This lens replaced my 18-105mm which I was able to still return to the store. I think this new lens is slightly sharper. And since I have my camera hanging off of my backpack shoulder strap for hiking the lighter weight and smaller size is greatly appreciated. Plus I was willing to give up a little speed for a longer zoom. FYI. EU exporter is Belgium. Not made in Belgium. Box says it is made in China :(

Please don't wait too long for the side by side comparison of this and the 18-105. Would also be interested in seeing the best alternative (similar range, faster, price no object) to these Sony APS-C lenses. I see complaints below...but no alternatives that do the same things at similar prices. If there are, please suggest one or two. Good channel. It depends entirely on how you plan to use them. One is a wide, slightly heavy fast prime. The other is a compact and light zoom lens with decent aperture range for daytime shooting. What I’m trying to say is: these are very different lenses, for very different use cases.

Both the two versions of the Sony super zoom aps-c e-mount 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS despite their convenience have serious distortion and sharpness issues. However this is common with most superzoom lenses. The Sony APS-C e-mount 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is by far better.

55-210 is the only telephoto lens on the list! Plus its $100 used, so its a deal! 18-135 is the sharpest in the center, 18-105 is best for video and sharpest in the corners.

Question for all of lens nerds! I recently ordered a6400 with 18-135mm and I wonder if I did a mistake not taking the 18-105mm lens. I will shoot only in a studio, youtube videos, with a dark black background, with only one main source of a light and another as a lil effect, and on post I will try to darken all up. Filming will happen on a tripod, some sequences at 18mm, some others zoomed in, occasionally on a slider. No bokeh, no gimbals and only the center of the frame is important to me. Picking the 105mm was more expensive and honestly didn't see any enormous advantages regarding what I will create, with the exception of low light performance, which is my main concern, because I want also the sharpest footage I can get. Any thoughts? Did I make a mistake not spending more for the 105mm? I was going for the Sigma 16mm ofc, but I made up my mind considering the easier workflow of a zoom lens. A big thank you for investing a few seconds answering to me.

You should note although the 18-105 is longer it is better for gimbals as it does not extends in length it all happens inside so it doesn't affect the balance on the gimbal.

When I first saw they will release this I was excited. I still love my Canon 18-135 STM and thought it would be great to have one similar lens for my Sony. BUT when I saw videos with people being angry with sony for this lens I realized there already are two other lenses I sorted out in my mind (to big, to heavy). So yes, why this lens? I still think it is nice to have for travelling. All this thought I had before I saw the price. I think it would be good selling for 300-400 EUR not for over 600 EUR.

Nice lens. I like the size but already got the Zeiss 16-70... :D. Would love if Sony would release an updated telephoto lens for the crop sensor though. The full frame ones are too big. Btw sigma will release its art lens for emount. No more adaptor !! It's only the prime ones but am hoping for the 18-35 f1.8 version 🤞

I'll probably go for the Canon 90D camera. Has SD II instead of SD I card reader, good stabilization, easier menu touch screen integration, great night time 4k 30fps video with no crop, and is cheaper than the Sony A6600 Kit. And has no electronic rolling shutter issue as it gives you the option to use mechanical shuttle which is fine. Sony NZ is just too expensive and the RX100 VII has terrible cropped stabilization and poor night time video due to it's small lens.

How does this compare to the newer Sigma 18-50. Having a child soon and debating about swapping this for the Sigma zoom or the keeping this and picking up the Sigma 56mm F1.4. I am not backpacking the world currently so no need for the uber zoom, but I would like the sigma 18-50 to be a step up as I found this zoom to lack in sharpness vs my sigma 30mm.

I just bought and received a used copy of this lens based your excellent review. The lens doesn't display its focal local in the evf. It is a useful feature that is in my only other zoom lens, the 16-50mm kit lens? I would like to have it if it's not broken on my copy. Do you recall seeing that displayed in your copy?

Hello, im looking to buy a sony a6400. I dont understand why this lens costs $600, but a crop sensor canon ef-s 18-135 costs only $300. Maybe I should just get into the canon dslr ecosystem to save money on lenses. Are we paying extra for mirrorless lenses(newer tech)? Thank you.

Arthur, I have this lens coming with my a6600. is the zoom ring is harder than focus ring? this is my 1st mirrorless camera so I dont have any experience before with any lens. Thanks in advance for your answer

That’s normal. If the zoom ring is loose, then it will move when you point the lens up or down (lens creep). If the focus ring is too tight, then it’s very hard to make small adjustments when using manual focus. A good focus ring should turn easily and smoothly, but with proper damping.

@@saifaldin_ Good point, I had the 70-300 zoom lens and lens creep was terrible. Gave it to my son, got the 70-200 with internal zoom. I'm happy. I also got its big brother the 200-600 zoom with internal zoom and the 18-105, also with internal zoom. It's incredible how much better the internal zoom is in overall use. No creep, rings turn easily just using finger tips. For shorter zooms in the 10-18 and a little larger, zoom creep is not an issue.

Hi! Could you recommend a lens for Sony A6600 to: -KZbin vlogging (like here 11:05 distance, desk distance), head talking -universal and portrait (like 18-105 etc.) Or maybe something universal that can do both.

Are Sony's IBIS and in-lens stabilization compatible? You mentioned having a double benefit of having both, but I always knew that this would cancel each other out. Now when you mentioned it, I did some googling and apparently this bit of info got outdated over the years. Now some of the body/lens stabilizations are compatible. Is this one of them?

Do you know if the Sony A6400 when shooting a scene can it be paused and then continued without creating another file? Also does the 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 lens upgrade really produce good video ? How does low light situations with this lens set-up look? What i see here looks just fine. Some people say it does not look that well--you said 18-105mm is better but I can not find a kit with this lens in it. So can I get by with 18-135mm for everyday video? I know it is not a low light lens.
