Sony 50mm f/1.8 teardown (dust removal attempt)

I did successfully take this lens apart after it fell into the water and unacceptable amounts of dirt were in between the lenses. To remove the front part you have to pry it open by putting a knife between the filter thread and the front part with the numbers on it (It is impossible without damaging the front part). It’s glued in with some double sided tape. After that there are only a few more screws to remove. You will also have to take everything apart from the mount side. **Unless you have nothing to lose, under no circumstances i would recommend doing this** because the lens groups are glued together. Somehow dust gets inside that’s impossible to remove without breaking the plastic holding the lenses together. You will probably end up with a much worse situation than before...

the "ornament" ring at the front on many Sony lenses is glued on unfortunately. Sony makes special wrenches in various lens diameter sizes to help get them off. underneath, the "filter" thread frame is held on by screws.

@@petehelme7714 yeah I did find that out the hard way.... but I might have managed to do it if I was a bit more patient with my heat gun. but it is to be expected from such a cheaply made lens :(

have you tried using small amount of alcohol to remove the adhesive of screw cover?

not really sure what screw cover you are talking about... the last lens that I could not remove ? or the plastic cover on the front lens ?

@@DuncanDimanche-sreview it's the one you're trying to blow with heat gun the label in front of lens but my guess it's not built that way like the one i had from nikon before

Ive taken canned air and blowed it in thru the back around the sides to blow dust off the inside elements in the past. But im not sure if that would have worked here even.

that could have been a great thing to do before trying to open it ! I think that they have lazers now that can eradicate dusts particles (but I could be wrong) I could have tried using some sort of vibrator to try and shake the dust off also

It would have been best to give it to Sony or a contract service partner. I'd never open one of my lenses, never did this all my life. 🙂 At least, you put it back together working again.
