This isn't a fix, it's a workaround. There are cheaper workarounds available, and the interlace lines you talk about can be taken care of with simple settings in the A5100 itself, which I'll explain in this post. I must say that I was hoping for a video showing new cooling options, but alas. Anyway: The problem with this method of using the HDMI output from the A5100 is that you can't use the special zoom mode (that I forgot the name of) for manual focus, so manual focus is a pain for this--but for most people, one of the autofocus options work good enough. If one is recording in their house or in a studio, there are a number of video capture cards you can get that are under $200. On some of them, if you have Windows, you can use Open Broadcaster Software to record and use the inputs from your audio device--some of the capture devices only handle up to 30fps and some handle up to 60fps. If you have a Mac, you can use an Elgato Game Capture HD60 and use their capture software and actually get 60fps at 40Mbps, though with their capture software, you cannot record the audio source from your regular audio device, it must be hooked to the HD60 capture device. If you have Windows you can use that same HD60 with Open Broadcaster Software as well as the capture software that comes with it. The card I was using, PEXHDCAP, which had a max of 30fps, had settings that let me get rid of the interlacing issues if I was too lazy to change the camera's video recording settings from 60fps to 30fps or 24fps. Those interlace lines you're getting? Yeah, that's because the camera is outputting 60fps and your expensive equipment that cost as much as the camera can only handle 30fps. If you want the A5100 to output 30fps and not get those interlace lines, you just change the video recording settings in the A5100 under the XAVC S settings, from 60fps to 30fps or 24fps, and voila, no need to use software to get rid of the interlacing. Anyway, just know that there are less expensive ways to go about this than what you have suggested.

+Kizzume Fowler (Stinky) It's interesting what you are saying but it doesn't work. As he said - IF you go to the settings and putting it in 1080 "p" you don't get a hdmi output.
@kizzume8 жыл бұрын
mrharpman You set the camera for "Movie" mode and then I use "Manual Exposure" (push the OK button, and then go to the top option, and then "Manual Exposure"), and then go to the main menu, Camera Settings, screen 2, select XAVS S for the File Format, and then 30p 50M for the Record Setting, and yes, it works. All of my 30fps videos are made this way.
@mrharpman8 жыл бұрын
Have you tried recording with external recorder yet or are you just guessing this? Cause it doens't work with the Black Magic one and it doesn't work with my Atomos Ninja Blade and Ninja Star.
@kizzume8 жыл бұрын
mrharpman I don't use expensive external recorder hardware, I use my desktop computer that I put together myself for about $600, and a video capture card that cost about $125, and then I use the free program called "Open Broadcaster Software". That's what I talked about in my comment. I not once mentioned what someone does with $600-$2,500 external recording hardware. The entire point of my comment was advice for people who don't have a lot of money to blow on things. If you have that much money to blow on that kind of price-gouged separate recording hardware, then you're probably comfortable spending even more money on more hardware that makes it do what you want. Or heck--if you have THAT much money to blow on things, why not just get a camera that does what you want from the get-go?
@mrharpman8 жыл бұрын
Got your point. It was more like, if you own one of this cameras too, it would be nice to use them properly if needed. I've maybe expressed myself wrong. Never meant to criticise you. It thought you maybe found a solution for this problem.

I bought this camera because it was cheap and had THE SAME SENSOR than the A6000, A6300, A6500 and A6400. Yea, I know, this one does not have sensor stabilization which is a very cool feature.... And it heats. Okay, but since my goal is photography and music videos, I can use a 5 dollar usb fan and problem solved. Paid 350 with kit lenses second hand. Solved overheating with fan. Doesn't bother me because I get my sound from another source. NAILED IT.

A simple "fix" for a unit that requires extended recording times where overheating is a concern, would be to use a small homemade, store or Amazon bought gel ice pack. Put it in a sock (for possible condensation drips), then lay it on top of your Sony like a mini sandbag...
@E-StudiosEU9 жыл бұрын
Hey Ted, Nice video but a rather expensive "fix". I guess you use the external recorders a lot for other camera's. But for people that are beginners need pay over 700 euro's excluding the ssd you need to buy to. I guess buying a A7000 or even a A7 will be much cheaper and better to invest in. But once again if you already have the external recorders its a easy cheap "fix". I know you can record uncompressed raw video with an external, but that isnt a big deal for what market / consumer this camera meant for. Sony still not fixed this issue?

I love your channel by the way but this overheating issue is utter bull shit. I was fully invested in purchasing the Sony A 5100 but the overheating issue kills it for me which frankly saddens me because I love all the features and incredibly fast auto focus. I shoot video at rock festivals or for interviews and such and 10 minutes is nothing when it comes to shooting live video I mean, it could shut off and I can lose an impromptu thing happening somewhere that might be the best 30 seconds of the last 10 minutes. I could see if it overheated after 20 or 30 minutes even but 10! Terrible. I am on the hunt again because of this issue. Again love your channel. By the way, what cam did you use to shoot this vid??

I did not know about this problem until this Saturday when I tried to record my daughter's performance. How much did the EXT recorder cost you?.. 2 out of my 3 Sony's died (Despite gentle use).. I switched to Panasonic GH4, GX85 runs for hours, longer Battery life, Even photography on the Lumix can take 30 Stills and I can focus the image after I took it.. No one else can have innovations better than Panasonic.. Most Pros have a GH4 as a spare.. Because it never overheats.

if i use an external video capturing device like the atomos ninja, will the recorder process the video or will the camera process it? the reason I'm asking is because when we are recording we always use the built in skin smoothing filter. if I'm using an external device, won't it record with the skin smoothing then? does that only work when recording straight to the memory card mounted in the camera? also, will I be able to use the playmemories remote function on an ipad as a second monitor for the person who are being filmed to watch her or himself? it would be great to have the person being filmed seeing her or himself on an iPad while I can sit a couple of feet away, at the same time monitoring it all via the atomos ninja device. thank you!

Can you check if it exists on the original file before you uploaded?
@theartofphotography9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Gilden it is - to get rid of it just turn smile/face detection off
@mzt-15299 жыл бұрын
+The Art of Photography Have you tried that? My internet sleuthing has determined that it only turns it off when you do that AND are actually recording. The regular standby HDMI that goes to the external recorder has it come on again by default, even if smile/face detect is off! I don't have a recorder yet to check - I was planning on buying at Atomos this week, but maybe I should hold off if this really doesn't work! If we have to press record like the A7S to get rid of it, our cameras will just start overheating again!

Why the limit of 1080i output from the a5100? Is it because the Shuttle can't handle the 1080p signal from the a5100 or is that the only way to keep the a5100 running cool? I been considering the new Blackmagic Video Assist (www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicvideoassist) or Atomos Ninja 2 as an upgrade anyway to get more control of the viewing angle of the display and to capture the 4:2:2 output. But may not invest any more money if it can't capture 1080p from the a5100. I've experienced the overheating issue and it caught me by surprise. a5100 is a great camera but finding some limits to the video that I wish I had known about before purchasing it and all the glass.

I'm seeing the skin smoothing bug on your forehead go in and out throughout this video. KZbin compression is definitely not helping, but can you check and see if its on the original content before you uploaded? I can take screenshots and show you what I mean if you'd like. There's a big problem Sony needs to address in this camera, the A6000 and even A7S!
@theRombus9 жыл бұрын
+Mordy Gilden The A7S and A6k can work around this bug by pressing record in camera at the same time (when internally recording, skin smoothing stays off if face detect is disabled). But that won't help up with overheating on the A5100! We need to make some noise about this issue! The RX100 had a fix rolled out, I know its a simple thing for them to do from a software perspective. We just need to raise awareness- a lot of people aren't even aware of this issue.
