Sony a6000 remote control using your iPhone

Explains how to set up an iPhone to remote control Sony a6000 camera - using the newer Imaging Edge Mobile app for iOS / iPhones. The video shows the process to link the app to an a6000 camera, but should also be relevant for other Sony mirrorless cameras. The process to link the camera to your phone is a bit complicated. Here is an overview fo the steps:
1. Create a Sony account so you can download PlayMemories Camera apps. Easiest to do this on a computer. Later, you'll use your ID/PW to download apps to your camera.
2. Connect your camera to your WiFi so it can connect to the online store (your camera, not your phone). Go to camera menu system and find Access Point Setup.
3. On your camera, go to the online camera store. Go to the camera menu system and find Access List. Click to open PlayMemories Camera apps. Download the app Smart Remote Control to your camera.
4. On your iPhone, download the Imaging Edge Mobile app by Sony. This replaces the older PlayMemories app. Log in using your Sony ID/PW.
5. Back on your camera, open the Smart Remote Control app you just dowloaded. It should tell you to connect your phone to the SSID provided (it creates its own hot spot - your phone will connect to this).
6. On your iPhone, open the Imaging Edge Mobile app - tap option to Connect to New Camera. It is easiest to use your iPhone to scan the QR code on your camera (it is a shortcut to connect to the camera's hotspot). If you get an error, turn everything off and try again.
7. You are all set - you can now control your camera using your phone.
NOTE - The app can control the camera to take photos, but unfortunately, the app cannot control the camera to take video. It may be that the a6000 camera is too old - this may differ on newer Sony cameras.

Still works in 2024, thank you! The only problem I had was connecting the phone to the camera's wifi, but updating the remote control app on the camera to the newest version helped solve that issue.

Hi, do you know how to update that app. Because on my camera the sync to smartphone application doesn’t exist

@@Ryan_Bu1 I just checked my camera and it doesn't have that 'sync to smartphone' app either. If I'm not mistaken, what I did was go to the 'playmemories camera apps', scrolled to find the remote control app, clicked to update it. Then I believe you have to connect to the same wifi (both the camera and your laptop), the camera will give you a link/QR code to connect to on your laptop, and once you do, you can update the app remotely from your laptop.

Thanks, dude. I have a Sony a6000 that I haven't used for a while exactly because I can't take pictures with a mobile remote. Perfect timing because we're taking a family portrait to announce we're having a baby! Hopefully, the pictures come out nicely.

Thanks so much for this. It's a bit of a challenge getting it all set up. For me, when I eventually connected the camera to my wifi, I then had to update everything which requires a Sony account and you have to link the camera to your Sony Account then update everything. Nightmare but eventually got there. This remote only works in certain camera modes too.

Thanks a lot ! I juste save 130€ for an external monitor. Video mode works perfectly with my a6300 (2019) and my iPhone SE (2016). Make sure to update the remote control app on the app store of the camera.

When I had it connected to my phone, it would not let me use the bulb exposure setting, but when the phone was disconnected the camera would allow to access it. Any way to get around that? Thank you for the video!

I don’t think my model Sony a6000 has a digital zoom. AFAIK, my camera only does an optical zoom - when I have a zoom lens mounted. Some of my lenses lenses have a fixed focal length (called prime lenses) and they don’t zoom. So for my camera, it is optical zooming, but only with a lens a that has an adjustable focal length. Phones typically have an optical zoom since they aren’t designed to mount different lenses to the phone. Some other cameras that have a built-in lens have an optical zoom feature, too - but this is also because they aren’t designed to mount other lenses to the camera.

Hey thanks for the help ! This might be a dumb question, but you know how you pointed out the app won’t work on video mode. Well is there a possibility that if it did or maybe on the newer cameras would it allow you to have control of the camera on phone while going live on Facebook ?

I would like to know this as well, because there are also separate stand alone remote controls available. They can work over longer distances. The other option is a small Infrared remote that needs to hit the sensor in the front, but from my experience that has a very limited range (makes sense because of the IR light).
