If it is accurate and can work in a variety of conditions (even with lower light), then that is really one of the most important things to have on a camera. It should be close to first on the list of features when people look for camera abilities.

Do you always have to keep pressing the back button? Why cannot it just keep tracking and you can fire when you want. It is kind of awkward having to keep pressing the back center button and then pressing the shutter button. Seems like it would have been better to be able to do a half press on the shutter button then fire when you want. Having to press to buttons at the same time is not comfortable.

HI Gary, I have many questions- seek your guidance. Which lens did you use in this video to demonstrate eye af? How do I use canon lens on the Sony a6300? - Will the eye auto focus when a Canon lens is used? Do you recommend the Sony a6300 over the Canon 80d for portrait and pre-wedding photography? Is there a way to lock the eye focus on? It appears in your video that you have eye focus locked on however I have to hold the center button to keep eye focus active.

Eye-AF is not a continuous focus option. You do have to enable it each time your subject moves and you need to refocus.

Hi Gary, I set my camera on Continuous AF and set up Eye Auto Focus, but in my screen I didn't see the small squares following my models eyes. Am I missing a step? I was using a Sony 35mm 1.4 Thanks!

Possibly. Are you using a customized button to track the subject, or are you engaging the Eye-AF and then using the shutter button to hold focus?

Dear Gary, let me first tell you that you're one of the very pro photography teachers ive been watching for a long time and now as i purchased the sony a6300 wit ha 24-240 sony lens i do have a problem when taking pictures, i have a little studio i setup in my living room, now everytime i try to take pictures for most times the if im zooming in to take a portrait the focus is ok but when i need to take a full body shot most of my tries failed, to the point i started to doubt on my gear but i know that the sony a6300 is a great camera so after i watched few of your video concerning the focus on sony a6300 im still not able to make it happen so whats your advise for me please brother? what kind of setting i should setup my sony a6300 concerning the focus that way whenever i take a full body shot it focuses perfectly without leaving any blury part of the model, because i always end up having her clothes sharp in focus but her face is out of focus or the opposite, your help will be much appreciated !!

Hi Gary, thanks for the info got mine set up now. Also what is the additional monitor that you are using please I can never see the screen on my A6300 as I shoot stills and video in bright sunshine. Is that a trigger on the grip? Thanks Rob

The external monitor is the sound device pix 240i. What do you mean by "trigger on the grip"?

The Gary Fong Channel not always but much more often than reflex , than camera with mirror, is that true? because I am really fed up to miss, screws my shoot with big aperture (f1.4 for exemple ) because of back or front focus. I use Canon 6D with 135 mm and sigma art 50 mm f1.4 and lots of picture are not good because of back or front focus when I shoot in f1.4 or f1.2 , now I fixed the problem with the sigma but it is boring.

hi, how can I make Eye Auto Focus work with my Sony 18-105 f4? It works fine with the 30mm 3.5.

We haven't had any issues with the 18-105. Have you tried updating the firmware on the camera to make sure it is current? The next step would be to contact Sony directly for troubleshooting or service.

It is a custom function that you have to assign to one of the control buttons. However, it is not available to assign to every custom button. Only a couple of them can be used for this customization.

Is it just me or doesn't Eye AF work in movie mode? :-( I have an A6500 and whenever I try to press the dedicated buttion for eye AF it says something like: "This operation or setting not available as follows: Shoot Mode: Manual Exposure" (but it doesn't work any any of the movie modes). In non-movie mode it works great. But I only use my A6500 in (manual) movie mode. So basically I can't use eye AF then? :-(

Doesn't work during video at all, unfortunately - a real shame as it seems to be able to track fast enough in the EVF. Loses the eye after ~ 20 degrees away from front on from my short experiments - wouldn't be useful during a real shoot unless your subject is looking dead at the camera imo. Nice to have though for portraiture
