Good afternoon, I have been looking at reviews for 48 hours now and I have to say that yours was the only one worth commenting on. Excellent review and exactly the set up I am about to purchase. I don't know much about videography, just that when I go on my travels, I wants smooth 4k, and sometimes 1080p slow motion footage, short shots and this seems perfect! thank you very much!

Tyler, you're right, this is an amazing set up!!! Light and compact it performed flawlessly right out of the box. I can't seem to get the camera forward enough to balance in the fore-aft plane but the gimbal seems to hold it in place when it's powered up. Thanks again for sharing your info.
@tylerherrinton

Ron I have that same issue. It's just because the lens is so small/light that it's always going to be back heavy. I just attach my quick release plate as close to the front of the sled as possible!

Great vid! I have the crane for the a6300 and I cant get the tilt axis to balance. With the kit lens it seems as though the camera is too back heavy.. have you had this problem? Do you know what im doing wrong?
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
Mine has the same issue, but the end result is just fine. You're right, the camera is just too heavy compared to the super light lens. When I have mine perfectly balanced, the lens is pointing straight up to the sky.

Awesome Review! I currently pair with sony a6000 andI like to switching between my sony 10-18 lens and my 35mm 1.8 lens. I can switch lenses and not throw off the gimbal balance. Also throw it on a monopod for unlimited versatility.

overheating was solved with an update. rolling shutter is fine in 1080 and can be reduced in 4k by shooting wide angle and clear image zooming in by 1.3 or so. much less prominent when cropped.

Hello Tyler. Great review. Question? Do you primarily use this setup with your gimbal to do just tracking shots or have you done detail, and other variety shots with that setup?
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
I have only used this specific lens setup for gimbal shots. I've used the A6300 for other shots but I use my Canon glass with a metabones adaptor. The focus ring on the 16mm isn't super great, so I would imagine it wouldn't be great for other shots, but totally doable.

great review mate. yes the a6300 is awesome. u should swop that 16mm lens for the 10-18mm (1. it has built in stabilization... so even more stable with gumbal 2. super light 3. crazy sharp 4. crazy wide (15mm FF equivalent) 5. u still have ur 16mm covered but u can get the crazy wide shots of venue / landscape / setting etc etc. ) i highly recommend it
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
+Adventure Riders I looked into that one! It's way more expensive than the 16 which is honestly why I went with the 16mm to start. I also need the extra light for dark receptions with the2.8.

Hey Tyler, great video - I noticed at 8:44 you're really getting into the 'ninja walk' to get that smooth footage. Have you been able to eliminate that bounce that seems to be so prevalent in a lot of other reviews I've seen? Clearly skill and practice would be a factor here - any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to do 'walk through' style real estate videos with this combo. The shot where you walked into the kitchen 8:22 seemed to give a really nice balance between inside and outside light.
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
+TT I've found there to be very little bounce in my shots at all! If you look at the basketball hype video I just posted, there are shots I was LITERALLY sprinting down a track as fast as I could. I think the shots looks pretty smooth. This would be a great combo for house walk thoughts. Shooting in 4K and s-log will give you good dynamic range to balance light

Great review Tyler. One thing that has put me off buying is the rolling shutter issue. On other videos I have seen online it horrendous, yet on this video you can 't see any. Did you do any post editing to fix it or is that footage out of the camera? Also, can you use any QR plate? All my monopods and cameras have Mannfrotto plates so would be good if I could keep it the same. Thanks
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! So the rolling shutter thing made me nervous to buy this camera at first, but I honestly haven't had any issues with it. I have used the camera handheld a few times, and in those instances, you can start to see a little wobble. For gimbal work, rolling shutter is no problem. On a monopod, as long as you're not doing any crazy whip pans or fast movements, you should be fine. The footage you see is color graded, but nothing else has been done to it. As far as quick release plates go, I tried using a Manfrotto QR plate, but it ended up being too tall and heavy for my setup. Because the lens is so light, it made the whole sled SUPER back heavy. I just use a small QR plate, because for weddings this camera only stays on the gimbal. Depending on what lens you're using, you could experiment with the Manfrotto plates and see if it works for you!

Tyler! great video... question, have you ever considered the 24mm sony zeiss 1.8 on the 6300 for the better low light features than the 16mm?
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
That would be a fantastic option! It's just WAY more expensive. The 16mm isn't THE best lens in the world, but for only ~$200 it's hard to beat. If you can afford the 24mm 1.8, go for it!

Do you shoot with the lens wide open on this setup? If so, ND filter? Or do you recommend getting more in focus for gimbal shots?
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
I definitely will shoot wide open in certain situations! The AF is so good, that you shouldn't need to worry too much about focus. The main issue with me is light, like you mentioned. I'll shoot around f/4, f/5.6 if it's sunny but don't like to go much higher than that...I'll just crank my shutter speed in those cases. I don't want to mess with ND filters on a wedding day.

Have you tried taking any pictures with the A6300? I'm looking for a camera to replace my Canon 600d which I use pretty much 50/50 stills/video. Something small like the A6500 is really tempting for travel but I'd really love to find a system that does both stills and video well enough without breaking the bank.

The 6300 takes pretty good photos! They're definitely on par with an 60/70/80D. The AF system is awesome on the 6300 with native Sony lenses, and even works pretty well with the Metabones adaptor and Canon glass.

Hey Carlos, thanks for checking out the video! You should double check the weight of the lens, but I'm 99% sure that would work on the Crane! I know that people use the Sony A7sII and 16-35 f/4 (which are both heavier than the setup you're suggesting) so you shouldn't have any issues!

Great review! Question: Can you change the "level" or orientation the gimbal keeps? ie - instead of level with the horizon, have it pointed down at 50 degrees (or whatever) via the joystick, and have that be the new level it keeps while moving around? Thanks!!
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Heiko! Yes, you can do exactly what you described here. There are 2 modes. One that mirrors you movements (turn the handle left, the camera moves left) and a locked down mode where the camera stays the same orientation no matter what. In the 2nd mode you can use the joystick the adjust the tilt angle! Hope that helps!

Hey! Those should all work just fine on here. Weight wise, no problem. You just might need to be careful if you go into inverted mode with the height of the camera + manfrotto adaptor. According to B&H the limit is: 0.8 - 2.65 lb. I know people use the A7SII with the 16-35 f/4 (a much heavier setup) with no problems. You can definitely get away with a heavier lens than the 16mm I use.

Mate, thank you. This was a fantastic review of the gear I'm currently looking at to buy! I was looking at 35mm lenses for it, but now I'm considering the wider one for what you're doing and keeping my GH4 with the 50mm focal length and shallow depth of field. I was looking for a video just like this. I am a c100 user and I am looking for a B Camera. I was thinking of the Sony a6500 and this gimbal. What do you think about getting the a6300 vs getting the a6500? I mean I know the spec stuff but what about the overheating etc?

But the 6300 will be very similar in image quality. If you plan to take the camera off the gimbal, the IBS of the 6500 is worth it in my eyes!

@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
I think for the price (only around $200) you can't go wrong with the 16mm. It's definitely not THE best lens on the market, and it doesn't work with some of the advanced AF functions on the A6300, BUT I do think it's worth it for the cost, size, weight and fast aperture. A good addition to your kit, even if you only use it for specific scenarios.

Question, Did you get the M or the larger Zhiyun Crane? what lens and weight work best for you? I feel like my a6300 and 35 sony lens are just to light. thus I dont get amazing stabilized shots? or I could be doing it wrong haha.
@tylerherrinton

I use the regular crane...the M would probably be pushing it on weight. If you're not getting smooth shots you're probably not balanced properly

How did you get the tilt to balance? I have an a6500 with the pancake lens and Manfrotto 323 RC2 adjusted all the way forward and it still tilts rearwards.
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, mine does that too. It's just not physically possible to balance it completely with that lens/camera setup. But because the whole thing is so light, the motors can compensate no problem. I've never had any issues with it, and it's always been tilting backwards.
@NoLikeCheese
@NoLikeCheese 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me on that. I discovered that I could use the 1/4-20 screw hole beneath the mounting bracket to attach a 3/4 inch by 3 inch long piece of stainless steel rod and it balanced perfectly. In fact I was able to move the camera back 1/4 inch. The rod added 6 ounces.

Hey Luis! The A6300 does not have IBIS, so it was not used in any of the shots shown. The A6500 that was just announced does have it, but I'd say you won't need it to get smooth shots with this gimbal setup.

thanks for sharing, 2 questions if you dont mind. Has using this made you think now about swapping out the C100 for an A7s. And secondly, its never going to come close to the iso performance of the A7s, but how dose it compare to the 5diii for low light, i will shoot my 5d at 6400 and its just about ok but i wouldn't go above it.
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
Haha, I have lots of internal battles about the C100 vs A7SII thing. At the end of the day the C100 is so good for a lot of stuff that we do, and shooting a full 4K wedding is just not really necessary yet. Ultimately I am spoiled by my C100 and things like built in NDs that you only find in those cinema cameras. If I had a 5D3, I'd have switched to Sony in a heartbeat. With low light, I'd say it's similar to the 5D. Maybe 1 stop less. This can vary depending on your picture profile in the Sony however.

How would this gimbal work with accessories tacked on, such as, rode external mic, Ikan 5" monitor?
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
Rode Mic, no problem. It will still work flawlessly. I'm not sure where you'd attach a monitor so you can still hold it and see the monitor BUT it wouldn't affect the gimbal if you attach it to the arm. So if you can find a good spot to put it, I say go for it.

Hey, i have some questions: 1) What do you think about the Zhiyun Crane V2? Do think about a upgrade? 2) I purchase a a6300 kit with a 16-50mm camera lens...do i need the Wide-Angle Lens from your kit for perfect wedding clips or can i begin with the 16-50mm lens? Do you just use this lens or do you need also other lens during the weddings? 3) I heard that the audio from the a6300 is very bad... also with a external audio recorder... Does that make problem for you? Thank you
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! 1) If you have the crane already, skip the upgrade. If you are buying your 1st crane, go with V2! 2) The advantage that Sigma 18-35 is that you'll be letting more light in, it's a 1.8 through the whole zoom range. The kit lens has a variable aperture and isn't nearly as nice. 3) I rarely use any audio from the A6300 so it doesn't bother me!

Tyler - I'm looking at buying a second hand A6500 or A6300 and a Crane I want to just leave it on the Crane with the 16mm for motion clips. Is that feasible or will I have to break it down and rebalance it for every job.
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 7 жыл бұрын
What you're describing is exactly what I do! I leave the A6300 & 16mm lens on the Crane for the entire wedding day. I do break it down at the end of every shoot and put the Crane back in it's case, but it literally takes me 45 seconds to put it all together the next time I want to shoot. Once you balance it once, it only takes a few minor adjustments to get it perfectly balanced.

can I use sony a6300 with rokinon 8mm and then put it on a flycam hd 5000 then also i will experience rolling shutter ?
@kevinantonowvideo
@kevinantonowvideo 8 жыл бұрын
First of all: I used the flycam and it's absolutely bad against any kind of gimbal. I used the flycam a lot and with the light weight of the a6300 this combo really gets frustrating. Because you will never get a decent balance. It's either too heavy or it gets so light that it becomes a giant pendulum which ruins your shot. Get a gimbal. It's worth it. Second: The rolling shutter isn't an issue as long as you don't make fast pans. Minor rolling shutter shots can be easily corrected using software if your PC can handle it. But since you wanna edit 4K video. It should.

Thanks Tyler, I guess my question is how do you initiate AF on the lens so it is operational 100% of the time, specifically so the facial recognition is active? Is there a way to show where the camera is focusing? Thanks again for an informative video and being so willing to help your fellow film makers.
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 8 жыл бұрын
If I see that the focus is off, you can hold the shutter button down half way to initiate auto focus. You can change the AF zones in the menu system to be whatever you'd like. With good lighting, I let the camera use all the AF points. In dark environments, I limit the zone to the top middle quadrant of the screen (where faces would be). You can do single point, expanded points etc. Just experiment to find what works best for you! Facial recognition will also be in the menu system!
