However the gh5 absolutely kills video for mirrorless cameras. Arguing about which one is "the best" online is a complete waste of time. As far as I know the FHD 1080p quality (sharpness) in the A6300 and A6500 was too bad compared to the Panasonic. I don´t know if the new A6400 has better FHD; I only know that the MP4 format option has disappeared. I don´t like to record in 4k and postprocess downsampling to 1080; you lost the 1080p 60 fps, and filming in 4k uses a lot of card memory and battery .

You are completely missing something, the majority of lenses you would use on the a6400 have OSS so it certainly CAN be used hand held (in addition add a Zhiyun Crane M2 which is not large at all and inexpensive and it is still MUCH less money than the GH5). Also you can use the usb c port for a headphone jack. And those complaining a mounted microphone blocks the flip screen for vlogging, you can purchase a cage from Sony (listed for the a6300) that fits and holds a shotgun microphone on top but to the side for a whopping ~$30. You can have this camera rigged up to perform BETTER than the GH5 for less cost. And it takes much better photos, MUCH better auto focus, is smaller and lighter. And the growing advantage of the Sony system is the lens selection is going off the charts now and there is ONLY ONE MOUNT needed for all their popular mirrorless cameras, a HUGE plus. And the new autofocus system means you can adapt other systems lenses like Canon with very useable results. No other system offers all of this and this is coming from (up until recently) a 15 year Canon fanboy. You can keep fighting if you want, but I will bet money within the next 2 years you will be a full Sony shooter. ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL, and it is not red or gold anymore.

Never tried GH5, so I might be wrong, but never understood why people would go with small sensors (even APS-C)

We went with the Panasonic during the overheating phase of Sony. We also compared the handheld stabilization of both the Sony and the Panasonic and the GH5 was WAY better (still is). Also the frame rate options was better and the battery was better. Those were the reasons we went with Panasonic 3 years ago. If we had to do it again, we'd still go GH5 at the moment for all the same reasons and the smaller lenses (FF isn't that crucial for us esp when traveling with 4 cameras overseas). The A7s3 does excite us because the A7s2 was so amazing in low light but not enough to change the whole system. -P

Yes, the battery life has slightly improved over the other cameras using the same battery. The processor has also taken care of the overheating issue. There is no 30 minute record limit anymore. Stabilized lenses make sense on this camera over combining it with IBIS. The GH5 is big enough to accommodate in-body stabilization properly, Sony IBIS in an APS-C sized camera is very poor. On the headphone subject, I know there are a lot of convenient solutions nicer than carrying around a comparatively large GH5. My main gripe in your shoes would have been going from that awesome 10 bit recording to the sad 8 bit on the Sony.

I only use speed-boosted full frame lenses on the Gh5, Gh5s, and BMPCC4k. I have no issues with shallow DOF that is more the fast full-frame glass on these cameras. AF? ok, you get me there. IDK I guess I would use AF more if it was really good. The Gh5's IBIS is quite fantastic.
@marquism17994 жыл бұрын
GH5, still in 2020, is amazing. The only thing that can compete with it is the X-T4 and the a7sIII really. The a7sIII's IBIS coupled with Sony's stabilization software really is magic. Here's hoping the GH6's IBIS will be even better.
@nikanj6 жыл бұрын
What about the a7iii? Good continuous auto-focus and stabilisation (probably not as good as the GH5's but 10x better than nothing at all). Headphone jack, card slots on the side, better battery life and full-frame.
@FStoppers6 жыл бұрын
Def a good camera (we prefer the A7s for low light though). We own an a7iii but still prefer the GH5 for the tilting screen and all the frame rates it offers. Also the m4/3 sensor allows for much smaller lenses where as the Sony requires massive full frame lenses. Sure the ISO and depth of field is better on the Sony but in most cases we can produce content that looks good enough on the smaller sensors. The new A7sIII (or whatever it will be called) is the camera we have our eyes set on. -P

thank you for being honest i own G9 outside of better lowlight and unlimited recording and focus speed of the a6400 i now see no need to switch to the a6400, even though i like the size of a6400 the G9/Gh5 has stablization 5 stops (which gives you better or equal to a6400 in handheld lowlight shots), headphone and mic jack, flip out screen, 6k 4k photo modes, incamera timelapse and mini movie mode, better app great app, GH5 10 bit color, focus rack, the G9 20FPS 80mp mode top lcd, red mode, better evf, both have dual card slots, better controls cheaper lenses yes they were almost there but not yet, the panasonics still smoke most camera as well as the a6400 God bless

Panasonic will just release new firmware for new GH5 autofocus features like Sony. If you want depth of field, just use f1.7 or below lenses or just use a telephoto lens with a lot of light. Autofocus works fine in well lit environments.

Good review for the most part... The One thing that was not accurate though,is that even though it's the same battery,the A6400 does have better battery life.Then you are not comparing the same cameras,because one is over $2000 and the Sony is $1000,so they more than likely will not have the same features.That's why a real comparison should have been with other Sony cameras,like the A6300/A6500.For the ones trying to imply something,there have been no overheating issues.I hate when people say silly,petty,and illogical things,as if a company is going to cram 1000 features into a $1000 camera,that's small and compact.Look people,it's one or the other.. If you want IBIS,cool,sealed,rugged,2 card slots,4k@60,super AF,etc,etc,you are going to spend more than $1500,period,because that's exactly more or less what full frame DSLRs already have been doing,minus the 4k@60.If it's that small and light,you either get IBIS or use a gimbal,and keep it moving.People whine and cru=y about weight and size,and then get something that you have to have 5 attachments,multiple batteries,etc,etc,,which kills the whole point of small and compact.In contrast,my camera is ONE unit,with 2 card slots,good AF,great battery life,IBIS,and amazing low light performance,all in ONE body,with NO extra attachments,plus i end up with whatever depth of field i want,or crop. If you do not like a brand or camera,just dont get it,stop crying,stop whining,and stop acting like you do not have multiple choices.I might not like a certain car maker,yet as a grown ,intelligent man,i do not walk around bashing it,crying about it,and making a big deal about it,calling people stupid ,inaccurate,silly names like 'fanboy',behind the scenes.I have never been to a car dealer or camera store,and seen any man call another a 'fanboy' to his face,because of the brand he wants,with his money..

Great review. I'm really happy I found your channel. Intelligent technical analysis, but always practical. I figure my Nikon D850 will be the last DSLR I'll own, I can't see a future for those big mirrors and that heavy prism. A couple of years ago these Sony mirrorless cameras seemed like they were going to be the game changers that would bury the DSLR...but as you point out there are just too many short comings. (My D850 reminds me of Kodak transparency film in the 1990s: nearly perfect for what it is, but about to be obsolete.) I'm mostly a still shooter so I really have no business commenting on video. A couple of things. The rolling shutter, herky jerky, strobing... may be the elephant in the room with a lot of video. (I like looking at videos of old airplanes, after the engines fire up all propellers become these bizarre annoyances, impossible to ignore. not realistic at all.) Speculating I think video cameras may in the future make two files, the sharp crisp single frames and then a 'blur' file that can be dialed up or down in post to smooth camera and subject motion. (This was a critical issue for the entire history of movies (film) but cinematographers and Panavision.... were aware and knew how to avoid it so we never saw much strobing .) Here's a random tip. That Manfrotto shoe on the bottom of the camera? Ever scrounge around looking for a shoe? (I have three tripods all with different shoes....) I figured out the my 'work flow' guaranteed that every few shoots, I would have to scrounge for a shoe. The solution is simple. Tripod, metal or carbon. The knuckle joints near the top, drill it then tap it with 1/4" 20 thread. Do that three times. Now when you switch cameras, remove a shoe, you can immediately store it exactly where it will be most useful. I've never run into anything critical or worrisome drilling these holes. Manfrotto has never figured this out. Another random thought. I've used Nikon gear for 40 years. I don't think many of the engineering/design people at Nikon speak anything except Japanese, and I'd be surprised if there was any regular communication with photographers/videographers who directly bring up problems. Just an idea. All of this gear is amazing, but there are always those odd shortcomings that simply should not be there. A headphone jack? Sound out. This is so unbelievably easy to add to any circuit design. How did they miss it?

I have a GH5 and A7Riii, both serve a purpose. The GH5 is small and that makes it a the camera I have a tendency to shoot with when not at home. Low light and depth of field, plenty of 1.4 and 1.8 lenses out there. Yes, I hate the autofocus, I'm just hoping Panasonic fixes it on the GH6.
