Without the 200 600 lens, is the sony a6600's autofocus fast enough for birds in flight or wildlife in difficult situations like a background with trees?
@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi LCyfish, I'd say yes, but that depends on the lens. I also have a Tamron 150-500mm lens for Sony and it performs flawlessly with the a6600 and BIF. Some of the other lenses not made for wildlife might struggle but the AF of the a6600 is great. Now I can't wait to get the a6700 though...should be even better. Thanks for watching!

@@DonMammoserPhoto Another question. Did you have trouble adjusting aperture iso and shutter speed quickly because of the lack of external buttons or wheels on the a6600? I'm thinking about getting it for wildlife/nature
@DonMammoserPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi @@ICyfish Not at all. I shoot 99% of the time in aperture priority mode and I dial in my ISO (I rarely use auto ISO). In Aperture priority mode I also normally leave my aperture at f/7.1 or f/8. Once all that is set I simply shoot away. The shutter speed simply falls wherever it falls depending on the amount of light I'm shooting under. Really simple and fast this way. I do recommend the a6600.

Hello i have got one question: If you are shooting threw viewfinder is there noticible lag?
@DonMammoserPhoto2 жыл бұрын
Hi, there can be some lag through the viewfinder, especially at the highest FPS but honestly it isn't bad and doesn't affect my shooting at all.

I really enjoyed your wildlife photography video and I set up my Sony a6600 with your settings. You mentioned in the beginning the settings are going to be for “static” photos and that was entitled “Custom Hold #1”. Does that mean there are some settings that need to be changed when the action heats up, leading to a “Custom Hold #2”?
@DonMammoserPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, yes, you'll want to have 2 settings. I have a fast action setting normally all ready to go and then a 'static' setting set to my custom hold #1. This way I am ready for the faster action but if during a wait time there is something a bit slower (such as a perched bird) I just need to press 1 button to also capture that.

Hi I have been enjoying your videos! Most of the settings on your camera are similar to mine!!! A couple of things I noticed is that there are times that the camera will lock focus on a wing or a leg with birds in flight!!! So I typically will try to set my aperture at f8 to make sure that the head is in focus. Eye auto focus works very well on owls that are statuary for single shot shooting! It will not work in continuous shooting mood. I notice that you mentioned the frame rates as being 10 fps. From what I have read the frame rates are 11fps (H+), 8fps (Hi). Two things about that "H+" is that continuous auto focus stops working after the first shot, and metering is also locked to the first shot. Every shot that follows, focus is locked, and so is metering. If you use "HI" (8fps) it is all working normally!!! I encountered this with owls flying towards me in "H+". Metering was not a issue, unless the birds were flying through shadows and light!!!! I am a new subscriber!!! Keep the videos coming!!!

Hi Marvin, Thanks so much for the positive comment and the H+ vs. Hi tip. I did not know this one and will test it soon and maybe even do a video explaining this. I'm not sure photographers are aware of this issue. Stay tuned and thanks again!

How do you compare A6600 vs A9? Good video and useful content!
@DonMammoserPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for watching. I do enjoy both cameras and first got into Sony with the a6600, then upgraded to the A9II. The larger physical size of the A9II is good for my large hands, and I feel the higher frame rate is awesome as well. I'm using the A9II primarily now with the a6600 as my backup. Maybe I should do a comparison video! Both cameras have their strong points. Thanks for the idea.

@@DonMammoserPhoto That would be great! I have A9 and A7R3. While A9 is great, I wonder if an APS-C camera's 1.5X extended reach would be useful. :-)

@@DonMammoserPhoto Hi Don, Thanks for the amazing videos you produce for us all. I am wondering if you managed to get round to making a comparison video between the A6600 and A9 for BIF. I am currently trying to decide which to get. I currently shoot with the Nikon D500 and Tamron 150-600 G2, The D500 is 10fps and 21mp - Q. If you were to forget about the higher frame rate of the A9 and the fact that its is slightly larger and presumably a little easier to hold (though I could get a 3rd party battery grip for the A6600) - how would you rate the A6600 against the A9 for BIF, tracking, focusing holding (the ease - consistency of holding focus). Generally would the A6600 be able to give the A9 a run for the money? or would it be left lagging way behind the A9? I live in southern Spain the light here is very good and sunny for 90% of the year. Also have you used the 1.4x with the A6600 and does it work ok with it?
@DonMammoserPhoto3 жыл бұрын
@@tonyb736 Hi Tony, Thanks for taking the time to watch and for your question. Your question is a good one and hard to answer. I have the A9II and the a6600 and I use them both with the 200-600mm Sony lens and sometimes the Sony 1.4x TC. The A9II is faster in all regards and is nicer to hold because of its larger size (as you figured). But having said that the a6600 is no slouch with AF and does compete well. I live where its mostly sunny too and bright light certainly helps both cameras, especially with the 1.4x. The extra reach of the crop sensor a6600 is nice but noise is an issue with that camera above about ISO 1600. For just BIF though I'd have to say I normally grab my A9II and its focus tracking is by far the best I've ever used (and I've used the Nikon D500 as well). I know this may not have answered what you wanted to hear...I'll try and post a comparison of the 2 bodies with the 1.4x TC soon. Thanks again and stay tuned.

Mr. Don , I have sony a6400 camera with sony 200-600 . I am interested in bird photography.My probleme is in 600 mm focal length I got slightly blurry images,But on 400 mm focal length the images are Sharp.How can I get Sharp images on 600 mm focal length ?
@DonMammoserPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pradeep, thanks for watching. What you have to remember is that at the 600mm focal length with that camera you have the equivalent of 900mm of power. Any little movement by you or the subject will result in blurry images. Try to use a tripod and faster shutter speeds such as 1/1000 sec. or faster (by having good light or raising ISO).

Question from a newbie: I want to create bird videos similar to this youtube video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpPWaHmKbMmLj8U ) in which the camera is on a tripod recording birds at they land on a food source or bird feeder then fly away. Do you think the Sony a6600 is an excellent camera for this project or should I buy something like the Sony A7Siii which is much more expensive. I am considering using the Sony 16-55 F2.8 G for the lens. Do you think this lens is a good choice ? I would appreciate any input, advice or suggestions. Thank you very much.

Pretty disappointing if you can't go past ISO 2000 due to noise, especially if you're shooting action at 600mm f6.3. Total non-starter, really.
@DonMammoserPhoto2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching. I don't agree with you. The camera and lens make a great wildlife combination. I've used them both for a few years now and get excellent results. Are you jumping to that conclusion you made or do you have some experience photographing wildlife?

@@DonMammoserPhoto Fair enough. I'm a retired pj (community and motorsports mags) with 27 years under my belt, freshly retired. I currently shoot mostly birds in flight (Canon 1DXii, R7 & R5 with 100-400L and 100-500L). What ISO+shutter combo do YOU shoot for wildlife action at 600mm and a max aperture of f6.3? I can sometimes get away with 1/1250, f7.1 at ISO 2000, but usually, unless it's a sunny day, I'm looking at 1/1600, f8 at iso 3200-5000. R7 is my preferred setup except the noise is pretty bad, hence my comment. No problem if you disagree but I find it hard to believe you are shooting that combo at ISO's south of 2000 unless you are making serious compromises in shutter speed.
