Sony's tech trickle down approach makes sense, it's just really uninspiring. Really the Toyota Camry of cameras. Utilitarian, will get better after a couple years, but if you have a Camry already, why upgrade even after 4 years?

@@jaymills1720’s junk. Sony makes awful apsc lenses, the only good lenses for Sony apsc are full frame lenses which you aren’t getting the most out of if you use their apsc cameras. With full frame lenses you lose the potential of smaller size of apsc too. Also he made comparisons to the competition so idk what you’re talking about, he talks about its lack of dual card slots compared to similarly priced Fuji apsc cams, lower quality EVF, the image quality is a known quantity with the lens and processor. XT5 is the main comparison to this, for not much more money you get 40mp over 26, two card slots, better build quality, better 4K video with next to no rolling shutter, and actually good lenses for apsc unlike Sony.

Agree, its not a forward step, its just up to date, maybe Sony has followed its trend of updates through software, id be spewing if this is the best crop they can produce, by the way I’m a Nikon man (not anti Sony in any way) and in the same boat, no news on a d500 replacement. No wonder everyone is flowing to Fuji. I usually run a dx and fx body combo with 3 fx primes 300, 40 and 24, the dx opens all of these up. I was ready to shift camps, but for sport shooting this doesn’t touch the opposition (current Canon and Fuji) No real drama yet for me, just waiting who produces a pro crop first (Nikon or Sony) to move off of f-mount (3 new lenses and either a z8 or a7 are the easy bit)

A lot of people will be looking at how much this reduces the price of the earlier models, the A6400 for around £800 and the A6500 around £900 and the A6600 around £1,000 with the kit lens will get a lot of people into this system. Legacy models have been due a price reduction for some time.

it's hard to tell the difference between the X-H2S(?) and A6700 in that soccer bit when using a wide angle at a small aperture, everything looks like it's in-focus so tracking seemed like an unimportant feature in that scenario.

I feel that this is not directly comparable to the X-T5. The most direct competitor is the X-S20 which aside from the less performing autofocus (most likely, but by how much, unknown) and lack of weather sealing, offers a highly compelling package for 100 dollars less.

Yeah, it's crazy KZbin reviews compare it to higher end apsc cameras. For its price its a decent camera. But it feels like a joke when compared to an xh2/2s. I honestly feel a6000 series cameras are made to be second cameras for people using sony full frame, since they have the same mount and I believe the a6700 uses the same battery as a7iv (not sure)

Some people say that Sony didn't hold back on this one. If 55 frame raw burst rate with 11 fps on a 10 year old resolution isn't holding back, I don't know what is. Plus, no RAW video HDMI output like the X-S20 that this competes with.

@@xWood4000 there are plenty of compact FE lens options for the equivalent aperature. Remember that FF is one stop brighter than APSC, so a Sigma 16mm f1.4 (400grams) is equivalent to 24mm f2.1 in Full frame terms. Samyangs 24mm f1.8 is almost half the weight (230 grams) while also being 1/3 of a stop faster

Both a6700, R7, and XS20 are great cameras. Although im not really into these type of content creation focused cameras. I am more on the photography side. I guess the most interesting thing about these releases are there are more grumnblings against the a6700, when we can consider how it has better rolling shutter and video dynamic range than the r7. It also has the best video autofocus and lens breathing compensation, compared to the low performance of fujis when it comes to autofocus. And lastly the lens options; you cant beat sony when it comes to 3rd party lenses. I believe all of these 3 cameras are great and theres no need to grumble too much against the a6700 which is in my opinion the better choice if your mainly a content creator and not just focused on photography. Sony could have done better but the a6700 can go against the r7 and xs20.

"Sony's autofocus just works" As an A7iv owner, I'd say "detection and tracking work. Focusing sometimes does". You have to look at the stills to check the autofocus. The A6700 is better than the A7iv in this department, but it delivers only 85% of sharp pictures of moving subjects (Damien Bernal, Northrups).

It's a cheaper FX30 with better grip and viewfinder. It's good enough package for me. Not sure they'll ever make an A7000 really as they'd be encroaching A7 price by then.

What Sony could do though, is an A7000 being an APS-C A9 or A1, and in the A7 price territory. Specifically for croppers (i.e. for wildlife or sports pros / enthusiasts). Back in the DSLR era, Nikon did just that with their D500. It was APS-C, it was as expensive as a regular fullframe (D750), but had the same high end traits of their D5. That was a success formula (the D500 was a success AFAIK). So, why not repeating the same tactics now in the mirrorless world. Unless Sony judges, that the niche is too small, or that an A7000 would become too popular (therefore cannibalizing full frame sales too much)?

Hey Kai I remembered all those gear reviews you did years ago, the one in particular that stood out was the a6000 it was revolutionary for mirrorless cameras at that time, I bought it after looking at your review and I still have it and it's still working really well. the a6700 likely has much better tech than the OG a6000 but they never updated the look and made it even bulkier nearing the size of an old DSLR. This camera for an apsc body is big and looks like an old camcorder from the 2000s tbh.

Would you recommend this camera to a stills shooter? I do full time headshots and portraits and I want something light and fast, currently shooting FUJI XT5 but thinking of jumping. What lenses would you recommend to rival a 50mm and 85mm equivalent? Especially the 85.

With the multi port being removed, I'm wondering how you're supposed to attach remote shutter releases or intervelometers. Also, the buffer is still smaller than the a6500's, but that camera was ridiculous. Glad to see the SD slot is FINALLY faster and we FINALLY get USB-C, though. Tempted to grab one of these as an upgrade from my a6500.

I agree with your review. But keep in mind this camera has not gone up in price despite all the camera price inflation in the last 4 years, so I would say it’s a good deal. Plus, I think the main improvements are with video instead of photography, with reduced rolling shutter and better processing

I understand your point of view. I would argue that it's the same price because there is not much innovation. Sonys is basically saying you need to buy a full frame camera to get a good hybrid camera. They're not even trying to compete with Fujifilm or Panasonic. They need at least one more aps-c that at the very least has 2 card slots, 6 or 8k open gate, high bitrate external recording with good codecs, and around 40 megapixels. Fujifilm has had cameras like this for a while now and Panasonic can do this type of thing with the micro four-thirds. In my opinion Cannon even has better apsc cameras. I would love to pay more money to get these features. The only thing Sony has right now is good autofocus.

@@johnrpittenger I guess it depends on what you are shooting, but to me the a6700 looks very good. I have an A7Siii, an A7C, and an a6500/6400. I don't need more than 4k 120 fps, and I don't need an extra card slot. (A7Siii is usually overkill for me, but I use it in studio.) I'd be happy with the A7C if it had 4k 60 fps. Sony's AI autofocus is industry leading. I have other cameras (Fuji X100V, Ricoh GRiii x, etc.) and the other brands are not quite there in AF. I will probably get the a6700 as a lightweight "do it all" hybrid to take on travel adventures. (Unless the A7Cii comes along soon to steal its thunder.)

Very cool video. Nothing serious. I continue to like this format. Concerning the camera itself: deceiving. FPS /buffer /displays / 1* SD card (in 2023 really?) / top shutter speed remains at 1/4000th . Is this thing accepting at least a grip for vertical shooting ?

Well, this sensor on the a6700 is a lot more than just a couple of megapixels. It's a backlit sensor that combined with the AI processor, creates highly detailed and virtually noiseless images, even in low light situations. The jump from the a6600 is huge. Add to that the improved autofocus and this camera is more than competitive.

I bought my X-S20 a day before the A6700 was released - while I love it, I am getting IBIS wobbling in handheld video with wide lenses (13mm Viltrox F1.4). Are you getting IBIS wobbles on the A6700 at all with ultra wide lenses?

You are comparing it with a Fuji that costs $1000 more - I would expect a lot more for the $1000, in your words "Still isn't up there with the Sony". Think of the lenses you can have for $1000. It's not just 2mp more, it's a stacked sensor, the image quality has noticeably improved. Looks like you had fun getting your exercise for the day though! :)

I think here in the US we look at this sort of camera very differently. I see an A6700 as a solid third, fourth or fifth camera in a multicam setup because it has 10 bit and oversampling. Or as a solid second shooter camera if they don’t have a Sony. It’ll be easy to use because of the same batteries and easy to match in post thanks to 10 bit. Or as a gimbal camera with the 17-70 2.8, thanks to the flip out screen. Vlogging is out of style in America. It’s all talking head now. Vlogging can be visually overwhelming anyway with all the wobble and wide shots. Your honest opinion of a camera matters more to me than what you guys did when playing around with it.

As someone coming from the a6600 I definitely feel like the upgrades are pretty solid. The AI chip, the screen going to the side, the 4k 120, and the SD card finally being on the side are really helpful in my opinion. If I was committed to my a6600 or if it was my main camera, I'd probably definitely upgrade, but since I have another main character, and the a6600 is already great, there isn't a major reason to upgrade. Maybe in the bigger picture if you look at all Sony cameras this might not be the best camera, but if you strictly use the a6000 series then this is a great upgrade.

For the price point if you are already a sony user this is an excellent option. If you are a wildlife or event photographer this fills a large gap. The A74 has a crop option but the resulting image size in pixels is too low. The 6700 as a second camera to my a74 is a near perfect fit. The combination of the crop factor and the fairly high pixel count is perfect for bird photography with big telephotos.

I have an A9 and an A&RIV but want to get more into bird video and want to upgrade but this mix from the Sony parts bin ain't it. Rangefinder design, low quality evf, crappy screen and unimproved stabilisation but with great focussing and good video. I'm still waiting for the D500 style semi-pro style body. I'm not confident Sony will deliver and am looking over the fence at Nikon Z8 where I can at least use my lenses with the Megadep adapter.

I have the 6400 now, and I am looking to upgrade. For wildlife and bird photography it’s not the best camera. Fuji has released I believe two or three updates with the last one just in May for AF. In regards to AF, Fuji may not be as good as Sony or Canon, but I suspect it’s a big improvement coming from a 6400 or even a 6600, as they don’t even have wildlife tracking.
