Sony A6700 - Overheat Test - Part 1 (Firmware 1.0)

Hi, one reviewer did the overheating test with the original 1.0firmware, then updated it and re-ran the overheating test. I would love to see you do the same (by in your next video run the same tests on the 1.1 firmware update. 2. For me, 4 k is incredibly overrated---the drain on storage and the hassle in the work flow is just horrible. People do NOT talk enough about routinely using 4k for video compared to 1080p. So, I would love SOMEONE to try an overheating test on 1080p after the firmware update. Thanks!!!

@@anthonyj_film_photo I've read somewhere that the 1080p in Sony cameras is really bad compared to Fujifilm. Can you check if that's true? I'm hoping it's better now since Sony is using a new sensor in this camera.

By the way, small semiconductor fans are available for when you run video. I would love to see the timing tests with a temp attached external fan (one is by Ulanzi).

I did see that Ulanzi one coming out! Very interesting and looks to be reasonably priced. I'm thinking I may give it a try. I wonder about noise for on camera mics... I dont think i need a device like that, but I would like to get the info to you all. It may certainly help some situations.

I have 6300 and overheating is terrible. I film solely outdoors and need the 6700 to last at least 2 hours of nonstop recording at 4k/60 outside in the sun. Until it can do that, I won't upgrade. Yes, I could go dedicated FX30, but it is missing much of what the 6700 can do. Thanks.. I have subscribed.

You should try recording on a proper tripod that elevates the camera further from the table. I tested this and it made A HUGE difference!! In 24fps 4K the camera stopped recording at 1h20m in a 85°F environment with the small tripod whilst in the proper tripod it went all the way to 2h without even the warm sign.

I wonder if the inconsistencies in overheat times, especially in a lesser heat producing 4k format like 24fps, make some things appear as fixes or improvements. That is interesting. I use 2 other regular tripods with similar overheat times as the ones shown. This short tripod was just so I can put the timer next to it easily. I would really struggle to say this would be a difference maker when there is wide open space around it and plenty space below for airflow. Did you happen to try this with 30fps or 60fps a few times? Thanks.

@@anthonyj_film_photo in my testing the table under the small tripod was noticeably warmer... That is why attributed it to the tripod: if there isn't air circulating then the distance to a surface can have a significant impact. I am putting together a test with all of the recording formats and I noticed this effect because originally I recorded 24fps 4k without issues and, when I switched to the small tripod in order to have a digital thermometer / clock in frame, in the same room and conditions, the camera overheated. Back on the normal tripop and no issues at 24fps no mater what configurations I used.

Hi, yes, I agree that is important. My original plan was that if these tests did not result in overheating in an air conditioned environment, then I would go and run the tests outdoors as well. But the tests overheated indoors, so I found it reasonable to assume it will overheat outdoors as well. Unless the weather is really cold maybe, but I don't have a way to test that. (I wish I did 😅) However these results are just from my particular camera. I've heard some others get the same results and some get different results. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the information . Im planning on buying a Sony a6400. I need it only as a Webcam , on my zoom conferences , I dont need to record the livestream . And those are pretty long , 6-7-8 hours long . Do you think it will hold on?

Hi. Thanks for watching. I have not used it as a webcam. I honestly can't speak on that topic for the camera because i dont have experience with that. I mostly used the a6400 for photos. I have recorded 4k30 with the a6400 indoors for around 30-40 minutes with no overheating sign. Battery would run out before any issue. Thanks.

First I really want to thank you for showing all of the setting your camera had while testing, most people never reveal what they has the a6700 set to when it overheated. I can run XAVC s 4k 30p 4.2.2 10 bit for over 2 hours. I however was not using SLOG-3 with a luts like you did the first time. I wonder if SLOG causes more strain. I am also on the new firmware so I don't know if that makes the a6700 more stable. Also I am getting better battery life that you are I started at 61% and filmed over an hour. I was just wondering if you are using old Batteries. Oh I am also in airplane mode, no Wifi or Bluetooth because these are battery killers.

So yeah, I figure besides 4k combined with higher frame rates, we are mostly uncertain about the exact other settings that contribute the most to overheat. So, I wanted to be sure I show my settings for my overheats that may provide info to others who shoot similarly. Thanks for sharing your experiences and settings above! I am currently working on a follow-up video with updated firmware and other settings. I will run a test today with my camera without slog 3. Also, the batteries are a combination of Sony batteries, Smallrig, and Neewer batteries. They are all less than 2 months old. I will check other settings. Hi. Outdoors is tough due to the vastly different conditions, weather temperatures, etc across the world. I tried to show a more universal environment that many people can relate to. It also seems that many of these cameras are behaving very differently between users. Some say they aren't getting any overheating. I would say go with the thought that if it overheats in the a/c indoors, it will likely overheat outdoors. I just updated the firmware and will make an updated video with test results. I am shooting right now V30 SD card,, do i need to upgrade V60 or V90 to avoid some more overheating?

I don't believe that is the reason for overheating. While the cards can produce some heat doing their job, they do that in every camera. V60 and V90 are for faster speeds, and i believe necessary for certain higher 4k formats, but not all 4k formats.

Try to test with lower bitrates too... personally I am interested in XAVC HS 4k/60p 75M 4:2:0 10bit

Ok so what was the conclusion? XAVC HS or XAVC S? Also I was wondering is 420 10 bit offered some time advantage?

For my specific individual camera, I have not noticed any remarkable difference in overheating between 10bit, 8bit, HS, or S. Thanks

The little ZV-E10 can record 4K30 for longer than a battery will last. It really doesn't make sense that a camera this much newer can't even record 4K30 continuously.

Some people dont get any overheat with there a6700 or zve-10. Some do. My zve-10 overheats after 20 - 30 minutes.

@@anthonyj_film_photo I record soccer games. 40-45 minute halves. In the early fall I got some overheat warnings and on a 90F+ day I did get shut down about 40 minutes in once. I kept the camera shaded (I was the shade) for the second half and made it through. I don't even always turn the camera off between halves but I do always stop recording. Always with usb-c hooked up to keep it charged because the battery doesn't last for a whole game. 4K30 100 mbit. I do have it in a L-grip partial cage so that might help with heat dissipation some. I've got it going now with a 256GB card. I'm thinking it's going to fill the card before it shuts off.

Wow, thats really good recording times. I really like my little zve-10. Great camera and value. I dont get as long of recording times as yours though. A while back, i shot a video with 3 of my cameras running at the same time to test out a different video style with different angles. The zve-10, a6400, and fx30. 4k30 100m. The fx30 and a6400 handled the time of about 40 minutes with no problem. My zve-10 overheated around 20 minutes. Again, great little camera, but i know its limitations for my individual camera.

I permanently switched from 24p to 30p years ago due to better panning performance. It's still filmic, but not sandbaged by historical logic (24 was about the slowest cheapest for stock waste 😊 that wouldn't bother the eye).

Man I wanted to buy this camera for shooting football highlights but not a chance with that overheating in 4K60. I miss all the options on Sony glass but I’ve been able to shoot my R6 II in Texas summer heat in 4k60 for an entire football game and nearly on one battery.

@anthonyj_film_photo also keep in mind the added bandwidth and 10bit. That's going to tax any camera. I knew going into it not to expect more than half hour or so of recording but for my needs that's plenty. I usually just do product b roll and short clips of offroading.
