+Jay SonyAlphaLab My first major digital camera buy was a Nikon D70 back in 2005. I used it until I became weary of toting it around. Went next to a couple lesser capable p&s Nikons for convenience, then in 2012 a compact bridge camera Coolpix p7100. Began watching KZbin camera videos in early October. Impressed with this particular video, plus the one on 1670Z Zeiss that you made. Took quite a few shots on a vacation mid-October with the P7100. After returning home and post processing them, I had enough of its limitations. I now have about 150 shots on my new a6000 with 1670Z. Wow! it's a new world for me with the high IQ I've found, especially with the fantastic ISO quality range. The APS-C sensor combined with the megapixel count and lens are astounding in my book. The added plus is the size. I wear it on my belt and it's not heavy or cumbersome like the D70 was. Great camera for my needs. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the info! Just purchased the camera body separately and purchased the 35mm 1.8 lens, really good in low light, the 16mm 2.8 wide angle lens, and the 55-210 4.5-6.3 lens. The 11 frames per second is impressive. Just make sure you keep the shutter speed up when doing so or it will not be rapid. And the auto-focus is incredible!

Brilliant review Jay, I'm really tempted to pull the trigger on this camera now. This is more than I really wanted to spend but it is streets ahead of the NEX-5T that I had been looking at. Aww, Layla is such a cutie... I loved the variety of her facial expressions that you captured in those shots. And your Lightroom demo of bringing the detail out in that blown-out horse makes me think it's about time I started using RAW. I wish the SELP1650 was a better lens, but I need it for its small size. Not sure why Sony couldn't make something for e-mount like the lens on the RX100? Thanks again Jay.
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Really glad you liked the review and The RX100 lens is so awesome and relativity small, because the sensor is only 1inch in size ;) That means the lens can be much smaller in comparison to the APS-C sensor sized A6000 for example. I'm glad you like the horse segment as well and you totally got the point of it. Thanks again for the kind words Jay

Thanks Justin for the comments ;) I would totally recommend this camera for anybody into photography wanting the power to change lenses. It's an awesome camera and the auto modes are very powerful for when you are still learning. The camera also has tips and instructions built in to help you get the most of the camera. The question mark on the lower right of the back is the default button for that. Really can't go wrong with the A6000, but the Nex-6 is also a great camera with a more beginner oriented camera. Might be worth learning on that and saving some cash as the IQ is great. The A6000 is a great option though for sure Justin.I hope that helps,Jay

Thanks Jay for a good video - I find the a6000 a major improvement over the NEX5n and NEX6 and NEX6 - especially the menu - much better focus/tracking focus - however I get more keepers with fast moving objects with from Fuji X-t1 and the Panasonic GH4 and faster focus in low light with the Panasonic GX7 - Tracking focus is still very impressive - especially face/eye exposure tracking - so more keepers from the X-t1 and GH4 with the DFD but the a6000 does well and adjusts the exposure a bit better - with APS-C size is an issue - so therefore I do not expect Sony will ever produce a 70-200mm F2.8 or even a 24-70mm F2.8 - the 70-200mm F4.0 is a nice lens but also very costly and quite large - and then a question is, which is better a M43 body with 70-200mm F2.8 or a APS-C body with a 70-200mm F4.0 in low light ? - so lets say that the APS-C with the F4.0 is marginally better in dynamic range - then there is a huge cost in size and weight of the larger lens - also monetary cost. - does one want smaller and lighter with marginally less dynamic range with a great lens selection etc - Sony and Panasonic clear winners in video - and very nice video in the a6000 - The a6000 is a very good value for many - like families - I would suggest a family to get it with the 16-50mm kit although not to impressive of a lens but small and as a kit not very costly - so primarily due to size and cost - also the 18-200 either from Sony or Tamron and the 35mm F1.8 - Still think the lens selection for the average user is very poor - seems there is more expensive Zeiss lenses then Sony branded - Sony still looks at the old NEX line and now a5000 and a6000 as a beginner camera and do not expect buyers to buy many lenses so therefore are not creating many Sony branded lenses - Most families are not going to pay $1000-1100 for a F24mm F1.8 when they can get a 50mm F1.8 for Canon for $110 - so many opt for a Rebel - which I think is a shame
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
igetsmart It's always a give and take ;) User preference I think ultimately determines what is best at this point. M43 is a killer format for fast lenses specifically, because the sensor is smaller. The APS-C has better depth of field and low light potential, but requires a much heavier more expensive lens. The larger sensor format offers a different look that I think swings most people in that direction, but I can totally respect and completely understand why folks love the M43 format as well. awesome depth of field for landscape work and affordable fast lenses. Killer range-finder style camera bodies with all the bells and whistles to boot! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and very well said,Jay

Hi Jay! I've subscribed to your channel ever since I bought my a7. End of this year, I'm planning to go to Europe for 1 month trip and I've been wanting to get a new lens because I only own 35mm fe lens and I think it won't be enough. I need wide or telephoto, either one will be fine. Sad to hear about the 24-70mm fe not up to par with the 35/55, and since Sony still don't have the wide angle native lens, I'm tempted to get the 70-200mm fe. However, searching for a review for this lens has been super difficult. I'm glad to see you held one here. Please kindly review this lens with the fe camera, especially if you got the a7 instead of a7r. Really looking forward to watch your review on the 70-200mm feel, Jay. You're my only hope! Hahaha.. I'm going to make a decision by early next month. Great channel btw, I'm a beginner and your lightroom video already helped me so much in terms of post processing. Regards, Tora

***** jay how are you. I really like this camera because of the burst speed and fast AF. but im torn in between this and the A7. which will you pick and why?? is the a6000 image quality as superb as the A7 since it being 24.3 megs. thanks
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
Jeffery Osei-Yaw The full frame format is much better for getting the super shallow depth of field. Other than that the A6000 is better than the A7 fvor most everyday use and video. The se lenses are also cheaper. The A7 full frame IQ is hard to beat though and is better than the A6000 in the real world, but not by much. The depth of field control is really the biggest advantage to the full frame sensor.

My A6000 with SEL1670Z lens just arrived yesterday so I have had not much time to play with it yet. I set the C1 button to toggle between AF/MF and the AEL button for eye focus. I set the dial to Ev Comp so that frees up the down button on the wheel which I set to Zoom just in case I need it. I would like to change the C2 button so something else but then it can no longer be used for help when in a menu. I think it would be an easy firmware update for Sony to have it continue to be "In-Camera Guide" when in a menu and whatever the user wants when the camera is in shooting (no menu) mode. I would also have liked one of the option when the Fn button is pressed to change the brightness of the display but it is not available. Maybe you can say something about this should you have an additional video on the A6000? You never know if Sony is watching. :) PS, the A6000 is replacing my original NEX 5 I got when Sony first started the NEX line of cameras.
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the nice comments and sharing how you are utilizing the custom buttons and A6000 ;) I hear ya about the menu options and don't understand why they don't put every possible function as an option in that menu. It's odd that some are left out I agree. I just sent back the A6000, so I won't be doing another video on that camera anytime soon , sorry. A77 Mark II is coming next!! Oh yeah!

Thanks for the quick reply. I have not been on the Sony Forum but I think I'll post about not being able to pick some on the functions for it. My NEX 5 did not have an view finder but the screen did have a auto brightness which the A6000 does not. Even with the auto brightness, I still had to change on sunny days..

this might be a dumb question but this will be my first professional camera, the only camera I've had before is just an inexpensive digital camera but I want something better like this that will last me years and years. So my first question is do you suggest a zeius camera lens? and if so what would be good for something like a trip to disneyland?? I want a good all around lens I was looking at the Sony - Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Zoom Lens for Select Sony Cameras since I know the camera kit lens might not be the best, do you think this is a good lens?? Also for the video feature, am I not able to record video with sound unless I get that microphone for the top shoe horn thing?? Thank you so much, I know these two questions might seem dumb but I am really looking for a good all around camera that will last me for a long time and for most every day and special trip events.
@ObelixCMM10 жыл бұрын
Yes Zeiss 16-70mm is much better lens than kit 16-50mm and perfect range for travel photography. There are built in microphones on A6000 so you can record sound without any additional mic. External (hot shoe mounted) microphone would give you better sound

ObelixCMM Thank you so much for your response! It was very helpful!
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with ObelixCMM on the 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens recommendation! The perfect all-in-one for the A6000 if optical quality is what you are after. If video is also important to you, then the 18-105mm f/4 OSS G Powerzoom lens is worth considering as well. It's much larger, but way better for video and costs a bit less than the Zeiss. My review of the 18-105mm lens is here: www.sonyalphalab.com/product-review/sony-pz-18-105mm-f4-oss-g-lens-review-selp18105g/

I have the Minolta 50mm F1.4. Classic lens. You're not wrong about the weight! I use it with my GH3. I like the Sony A6000 for the value you get from just $600. I'm thinking of the GH4 but the Sony is not far off it in terms of autofocus on fast moving subjects. I seldom do much sports or wildlife photography anyway so I'm really thinking about buying the A600 for pure value and the APS-C sensor compared to an m43 sensor is also preferable for lower light conditions. Have you ever tried Olympus lenses such as the 45mm f1.8 or the 17mm f1.8 on the Sony A6000? Just curious as these are lenses I use on my GH3. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the comments CorgiPorgi and no I have not used the Olympus lenses, although I have looked at them and would love to!! I even have a OM adapter, but never got any lenses.... Hi Love the reviews you put out. I have a question about which camera to buy. I knows it’s such a generic question and so many variables play into that. I will give you some background and try to answer basic decision variables so you can advise me. Firstly I’m not a professional or amateur photographer. I belong to the lot who have been shooting pictures with point and shoot cameras but love a nice snap. Try out interesting angles and try to capture great architecture with my family in the frame on vacations. Love taking pictures during my travelling and also love taking pictures of my 19 month old daughter playing and doing random stuff…I love the DSLR results that people take and share with me, but I don’t know much about ISOs or aperture etc. plus I don’t like the bulky body in terms of carrying it around. I think I would like to learn more to make my photos better but I don’t see myself being a advanced photographer with multiple lenses. My budget is under $800 dollars. As I don’t want to spend too much but yet want DSLR type results (especially low light photo results). With the research I did I came up with the Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm VRII lenses, Nikon 1 AW1 (as its water & Shock proof and not bulky) and Fuji film XM 1 (cause not bulky and amazing pictures I think cause it has the best sensor??) or Sony Alpha A6000. Some say A6000 is the best entry level mirror less camera out there! Does it have a better sensor than Fuji M1? Are the pictures as good as the M1??? . other two that came highly recommended are Olympus OM-D E-M10 and Samsung Galaxy NX What would you recommend out of these? Based on my user profile please suggest best 2 out of these. Will highly appreciate your support for me to make this decision.
@ObelixCMM10 жыл бұрын
Fuji XM 1 does not have Fuji's best sensor, you would have to go up to X-T1, that is "regular" 16MP CMOS sensor (equivalent to Sony NEX-6) And focusing speed is not as good as A6000 Olympus is famous for it's 5 axis stabilization, but OM-D E-M10 have older 3 axis stabilization and smaller sensor than A6000 (larger sensor better high ISO image) In your price range and intended use I would say A6000 is the best option for you.

ObelixCMM thanks for your input. I know XM1 dosent have the biggest sensor in Fuji.. but i thought it had the biggest amongst the ones i mentioned. even bigger than A6000? I think I should go with A6000. If I'm not wrong only one other lenses is available in A6000...

UA 0zzY It's the same size as the A6000 sensor - 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS Sensor
@ObelixCMM10 жыл бұрын
UA 0zzY Fuji and Sony APS-C sensor have same physical size. Fuji is using two different types of APS-C sensors, X-Trans found in their more expensive cameras like X-T1 and Bayer in their lower end models like XM1 both are 16MP and same physical size. Sony A6000 sensor is Bayer type at 24MP

Hi Jay. Great Channel. I just got the sony a6000...love it. I want to do some off camera flash with it. What wireless radio triggers work with that hot shoe mount? I can't find anything on sony's web site about what actually works on that hotshoe except for the Bluetooth mic thing. I have a couple yongnuo 560 IIIs and RF 603s for my nikon DSLR. I haven't wanted to test those on the sony because of compatibility issues I've seen online and the possibility of damaging the sony. Thanks.

Hi Steve and thank you very much! Glad to hear you like the A6000 also ;) All the basic triggers should work on the shoe, but the smart pocket wizard style units won't work. I have the Alien Bee basic Transmitter/ receiver set-up and it works perfectly. I don't think you will damage the Sony shoe unless voltage is being pumped into the camera somehow?

Do you like the new G lens that you are showing in this video any better than the original 18 to 200 mm silver lens especially on the new a6000? I love the silver lens for its images but hate the lens creep when tilted downward! Love the new g lens with its motorized zoom but don't like that it's only zooms to 105mm. I appreciate your impressions of the two lenses on this particular camera!
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments and I have not used the older silver 18-200mm lens is a long time Jim Burke I did enjoy the lens though, and the lens creep issue can be solved with a lens creep band: www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=lens%20creep%20band&linkCode=ur2&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Alens%20creep%20band&sprefix=lens%20creep%2Celectronics%2C143&tag=jhvitu-20&url=search-alias%3Delectronics&linkId=VL2UEEWU5ZCMLHPK I really enjoyed using the 18-105mm lens for the family type stuff, because as you said the powerzoom is killer for video. Also the range is good enough I found for everything we were dooing. If I needed more range, the 55-210mm was always an option and much lighter weight and more affordable! The overall bulk of the 18-105mm g lens is a bit less than the original 18-200mm, but the optical quality is similar. The 18-105mm g lens has significant distortion compared to the 18-200mm. The camera does correct this though if you want it to. I hope that helps? Jay

Any suggestions on upgrading from a NEX 7? From what I have read the A6000 is going to be better with noise and focus speed. Is there anything I will be giving up by switching to the A6000?
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
The A6000 is much better than the Nex-7 in my opinion except for the Tri-Navigation. Other than that the A6000 is better and has more features with the standard style hot-shoe! I'm sure some Nex-7 power user can come up with more examples, but I can't think of anything else your losing other than the killer tri-navi controls. The buttons otherwise are even better in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. I just sold my minolta glass to switch to all e mount lenses. I purchased the 50 1.8 , and the PZ 18-105, and am looking at the sigma 19mm as well as a zoom. I love the results so far. I guess I will look at picking up an A6000 too, don't tell the wife!

Very nice review so insightful! I'm torn whether to go for cheaper priced a5000, or this one for a bit more. In your opinion which camera would be the best to bring to low-lighted concerts?
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
cherrillyramos They are about the same as far as high ISO performance, but the A6000 will be able to focus much faster in all circumstances pretty much. The viewfinder will not help much with concerts and Image quality is also about the same. So, it's just the AF performance and EVF that makes the A6000 a better option.I hope that helps,Jay

Is the SEL1855 E-mount 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS a good lens for the a6000? I recently bought the a6000 and have a choice between the 16-50mm power zoom kit lens and the sel1855; which one should I get. I am an amateur photographer and have been using a compact camera until this time.
@Jason_Hermann9 жыл бұрын
Delta Cygni I prefer the 18-55mm lens because it has better corner sharpness and distortion control. The 16-50mm has the powerzoom feature which is nice for video, and is much more compact when the camera is off. The 16-50mm is a pancake lens when closed or off. The 18-55mm is a manual zoom meaning you have to turn it physically. I hope that helps, Jay

@Jason_Hermann9 жыл бұрын
Hadi M I would rather have the 18-105 G lens, but it's much larger and heavier, so you would lose the compactness the 16-50mm lens offers. So, depending on your needs, getting the kit lens might be good for some occasions. I hope that helps, Jay

Such an awesome review! Just subbed and looking forward to watching your other a6000 videos. I'm planning on buying the a6000 but torn between getting it with the kit lens or investing in a better lens for my needs. I take a lot of portrait/outdoor activities (I have crazy wild kids), and mostly photos of items for my business. A lot of still photos of objects and macro detail. I want a lens that's good all-around for my needs, but looking to get something within the price range equivalent to the kit lens (both of the kit lens bundle). Do you recommend a better lens that would be under $400? I really hope there's such a lens that would beat the value of getting the bundle of 2 kit lens'. Thanks in advance!

PersonalBD I honestly don't have any experience with a flycam/glidcam, so I really can't say for sure. The over heating issues is the only thing to keep in mind when recording for extended periods. The size and weight should be great though for moving around with ease I would think.

Louis de la Torre Hello, you would need the LA-EA3 or LA-EA4 lens adapter, because the lens is an A-Mount unit, and the camera is E-Mount. The LA-EA4 will give you much faster AF performance, but costs more. Hi,Jay! I have a question...i don't know what to choose(nex 6 vs a6000) i know that a6000 is a new one but it has 24 megapix. vs 16 at nex 6. Some people say that 24mp is too much and some of lenses can't reveal all the quality because of 24 mp sensor and i should buy some special lenses. I don't know relly...For the present i have f3 with sigma 19-2.8,rokinon 85-1.4 and 50mm-1.8 from sony nex. What camera do you prefer? Please i need your advice :)
@Jason_Hermann9 жыл бұрын
Veaceslav S. I own the Nex-6, but the A6000 is the beter camera for sure. The higher resolution in this case is not a bad thing. You don't need special lenses for the sensor, but the sensor is capable of taking advantage of the better lenses due to the higher resolution. This means the really small details will be captured better if a high quality lens is used. The extra resolution also allows for large cropping of images which can help in a lot of situations. I would rather have the A6000 for the much faster and more accurate auto focus, plus higher resolution sensor and better build quality. I hope that helps, Jay

I'm really tossed as what to get for my first time utube videos(VLOG) between the A6000 and the 100m3. Especially recording myself. I was really liking the screen that fully goes upright on the 100m3. Neither has sound input but I hear the 100m3 is a good basic Vlog tool? I would like to shoot fotos as well but that's secondary at the moment to getting the VLOG up and going?Any thoughts or advice?
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
David Keets The flip screen is awesome for the Vlog and both photos and video quality are excellent. The facial recognition technology will insure that your face is always sharp and in focus also, making it really easy. The only issue is sound quality, but I would recommend recording a separate feed and then syncing it up in post for best possible quality. On camera audio is not to shabby though ;)

I have the NEX5n and NEX7 which are collecting dust as both have a horrible menu system and soft Tri Navi which always get out of setting - when I hit the Play back menu it takes for ever to bring up image to zoom - focus speed not impressive and low light ISO not that impressive for the APS-C 24MP - but in good light quite nice - also a limited lens selection - I need to shoot in Auto Focus due to eyesight so getting an adapter and using manual focus lenses not an option - besides many moments can be lost when trying to manual focus a moving object - Yes there is now the FE 70-200mm F4.0 - but it is $1500 and only a F4.0 - I have gone crazy with M43 and love it - but as I have some E-mount lenses I am thinking of maybe getting the A6000 - but very disappointed that there is no Touch LCD - same shutter sound from old NEX which always makes me think there is a lag but I am sure there is none - but just sounds like it - Your videos are always great - and nice to see family - So my struggle continues - as I expect Sony will not produce any fast zooms and just seems to have stopped making lenses for the E-mount - and a costly thing to have to buy FE - Does not seem that the ISO performance is that much better then the NEX6 which I have tried - Yes the tracking fast auto focus is nice and keeper rate is quite good as long as subjects not to close - but I find the Auto Focus faster on the Panasonic GH4 and GX7 and Olympus OMD-EM1 on still objects - and the Panasonic's do much better in very low light - both the Sony A6000 and the Olympus OMD-Em1 struggled - Price is good - so maybe I jump the gun :) but it will be a mixed feeling I think
@Jason_Hermann10 жыл бұрын
jon hermannsson Thanks for the comments and it's never and easy decision. The A6000 has some advantages over the smaller sensor cameras, but they are also awesome. Lots not kid each other, the OMD-EM! and GX7/ GH4 are awesome cameras! Sony is slowly come out with faster prime lenses, but it takes years to engineer them. Sigma makes a couple really affordable primes for the e-mount, bit no fast zooms yet. The 70-200 is expensive, but it's pro quality and relatively light weight. This makes sense for the mirrorless cameras as they are also small and lighter weight. Mind you I'm speaking from a marketing perspective. Now that most of the main lenses are established, faster lenses should be coming down the pipe pretty regularly I would think. Sony knows very well the demand for lenses is crazy high. They can only produce so much though and maintain the quality and so fourth I believe. I don't work for Sony btw, so this is all speculation on my part ;) Jay

***** I bought the A6000 few days back - should arrive in few days :) Will be a mixed feeling as I know there have been many nice improvements like the menu - a mode dial - much faster focus - more custom options with buttons etc. but still no Touch LCD and a two step thing to start auto focus area - and of course no new lenses :( I hear Sigma is promising lenses for mirror-less m43 - hopefully that includes E-mount also - So I see my 50mm F1.8 mostly on the A6000 - as the 35mm not as good for faces, tow wide - I hear the A7000 will have Touch LCD and In Body Image Stabilization - that is just awesome - but not sure if I like the looks if rumors are true - more like the A55 or RX10 - gone the nice current sleek look - but I guess to fit IBIS etc the body had to be a bit larger - So now my Sony cameras are up to count of 7 :) should put by NEX5n and NEX7 on Ebay :) as I hardly ever use them - but will keep lenses - so maybe I might also spring for the A7000 - but I suspect I will be much happier with the A6000 then my NEX's - Keep the videos coming Jay they are great
