Sony Bravia XBR65x900c four red blinking lights, FIX!!

I was basically told by Sony, sorry about your luck. I purchased this TV in 2017 after my father has had his Sony Bravia for over 15 years. I had done tons of research prior to purchasing and thought I was getting a quality product from Sony, since the TV was more than $2000. It has spent the past 6 months in a spare bedroom collecting dust until I found this video. I was about to bite the bullet and buy a new TV (not a Sony). I can’t thank you enough for this easy tutorial!

Incredible to hear it worked for you! I received similar treatment from Sony. Apparently the LED fix is too laborious so they write it off. Just turn down the backlight a bit to avoid flickering. Cheers! Mine is still running several years post fix.

@TheDarticus my tv is similar how do I match the pin with the bl_err?
@fernanddubois1792Ай бұрын
@@sultanshareef91Don’t know if you or the above person had any luck but my unit had a different board and connector layout so I had to poke around more but was successful. You need to find a white connector on the power supply board or the middle one that has a pin labeled bl-err. The pin-out legend is printed on the board. On mine it was pin 8 on a connector that had two rows. I was able to push it out by pulling on the wire while using a small screwdriver to push on the clip holding the pin in place. I then moved it to an empty ground slot on the same connector. If you cannot manage that you can always cut the wire nd ground it to the chassis. Of course only do this with the TV unplugged.

I boxed it up placed it in the attic (twice it almost went to the dump ). On a whim I search for a repair and found yours !!! Did exactly what you said and less than 20 min this 3k paperweight is fully functioning again !!!

that tv stil working in 2024?
@TheDarticus5 жыл бұрын
Quickly commenting for everyone - Firstly, for those of whom this worked for, fantastic! This procedure is to circumvent an underlying issue with dislodged or burnt out LED’s at the base of the TV that’s triggering the backlight error. To complete the fix you need to remove all control boards, carefully peel off LED connections and replace the LED panel that’s faulty. This is a far more significant undertaking and the part is difficult and expensive to locate. Typically there are four sets of LED ‘strips’, I’ve only been able to find these strips on eBay but you’d need to validate the part number and proof of functionality. Otherwise if you can deal with one or two dead LED’s you’ve got your TV back. Good luck to all and I’m truly happy some are having success.

Thank you for sharing! I did this yesterday and the TV is working much better (so far). Knowing the real problem is the LED strips, I'll regard this repair as an effective "band-aid", buying me time to budget for a replacement TV. Shame on SONY for producing a high-end product with a service life of only 5 years, and no replacement parts available.
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more! Glad this worked as a temp solution. If you experience flickering in the future with this bandaid reduce the backlight brightness a bit as more LED’s are destined to fail. Chalk it up to poor soldering or quality control. Glad you’re back up and running.
@wilsonblack22014 жыл бұрын
Update - In three week's time, even after setting the brightness to the minimum, the flickering, though inconsistent, degraded to the point where the TV was no longer viewable. Those three weeks did give us enough time to research/select/purchase/install a replacement TV (not SONY). Thanks again for your help.

Fixed. Same TV. 4 red lights a few days after the 3 year old threw a cars toy at it. I'd add that a crazy small flathead screwdriver helps get the wire out, then it snaps into the ground port. Also, there isn't any noticeable issues with the screen once if started working again. Seems like Sony's all or nothing approach to back lighting must sell a lot of TVs. Thanks a ton for sharing. Ya, the bypass makes perfect sense to see if it is the actual power supply or not. I think my issue is the lower LED strip. Now that it is back on it is a bit discoloration, like a red Hugh. I came across Sony’s new Bravia line and it’s clear they know the problem and have taken design steps to fix it. I’ll keep everyone posted if I get the full fix done. Cheers my friend!

Thank you Matthew i have noticed this tip. However my Sony is an abravia Lcd and the control for the lamps is the inverter board which i relaced and thought i had suceeded but back to 4 blinks. I have no wire to the error pin from the power board. I think i need to change the main logic board and found a source.Any advce? thank you

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this video your fix worked to get the tv back on but now the screen flashes light and dark shadows. I suspect this is why the 4 red light blinking occurred in the first place. Probably the display board is bad? Any thoughts? Thanks!!
@TheDarticus5 жыл бұрын
Mark Kuhlenschmidt Hey Mark - that’s right this fix helps get the crux of the issue to determine which LED’s have failed. To me it sounds like the led strip itself is the fault. This is a cumbersome task to replace as they’re underneath the screen. I’m beginning to have full LED strips go out and go dark momentarily and come back on. I really believe this is just a major deficiency in the engineering of the television. This is a common problem with going so thin and not having adequate cooling mechanisms in place. Good luck!

Hi! Thank you very much for your instructions. I did the same& But now I see shadow light going along the bottom of the screen. How can I solve this issue?
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Hey! That shadow light is the reason it was tripping the error code - the final fix is to fully replace the faulty LED strips which quite a bit more cumbersome and difficult to find the parts. I’ve decided to deal with the light bleed and a flicker once in awhile. There are a couple videos on the LED replacement. Good luck my friend!

Hi does this work on the xbr 55x850c model aswell I have a similar problem red light blinking 6 times I restarted the tv by factory settings and it worked for a day but the light came back please help
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Hidden in plain sight Hey! The 6 is referring to an error likely with the power board or LED drivers. I would first take the back of the TV off and try reseating all connections. You could just something loose or corrosion. Try a factory reset afterwards and keep your fingers crossed. I’m sorry I wish I had more info regarding the 6 lights. Good luck, cheers.

Sony XBR65x900E has different board layout but I am getting the four blinking red lights. Will grounding out the BL_ERR wire work on this model? If so, where is it? The boards are not marked like the XBR65X900C. Thanks

Hi, just performed the surgery described. Works for a while, but sometimes the LED's starts to blink randomly. I assume this is what cause the LED driver board to signal the error (I just disconnected) to spare Sony's customers from the embarrassment. Do you have any idea what may be the root cause of this? is the driver board or the LED strip?
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andreas - likewise, the root issue is the small LED’s at the base of the TV slip off their soldering. I found by lowering the backlight level to near minimal it won’t blink much. Unfortunately the full fix is a pain and hard to find the LED strips.
@andreasrosengren60594 жыл бұрын
I Will try that. I turned the TV off and thought I heard some click and when I turned it back on it was ok again. Wonder if there is something heat related on the controller board. I realise the soldering of the LEDs is a well known fact, but my gut feeling is that if that was the only problem it wouldn’t affect all the stripes at once. I haven’t looked too deep but I believe there are three of them there. Strange... I will hang in there and maybe I will be able to postpone getting a new TV and play with it then. Anyway, thank you very much for the tip to start the journey 😀
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Keep fighting the good fight! I think it’s a real design flaw. They went super thin with this display and tucked the control boards some operating at very high head low on the display. I think certain LEDs have extreme heat dislodging them. Good luck! I hope it saves you for a bit. I actually bought a new one before tearing into this one and was happy when I found a bandaid fix. I noticed the flickering issue gets extreme if I’m streaming from Apple TV with HDR and backlights turned up high. Cheers!

Opened my XBR 900E hoping to try this, the boards inside look different, havent been able to find a video like this for the 900e’s. Any chance you know where the bypass would be on those? This is an awesome video!
@TheDarticus Жыл бұрын
I’ve received this question once before but unfortunately I am not sure on the 900 model. Assuming it would be the ribbon going into the LED driver board. Ground wire is normally more easy to identify.

Very interesting information sir, i have a Sony BraviaKDL40R470B it was giving4 red blinks i replaced the TCon board which i found was wet, the tv starts up then without the 4 blinks, then quickly goes into the 4 blinks is it possible you may know what the problem could be. Thanks
@briekhnaa5 жыл бұрын
You can open led srtip and check for loose led soldering to the strip because it is because of one or more non-functioning led(in my opinion ).
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
briekhnaa you’re absolutely right. If it weren’t so difficult gaining access to those LED strips would make life quite a bit easier!

I have an XBR-65X900C that had the 4 blinks problem. I got it to start up and mostly work by changing the LD_ERR pin 2 to pin 9. The previous owner put it in unconditioned storage for a year (causing thermal expansion of the solder joints) after which it stopped working. If I keep it down to brightness level 6/50, only one LED is bad, but turn it up and the rest start flicking on and off. Could I take out the backlight strips and hit them with a heat gun/hair dryer? I'm not skilled at soldering so I'm not sure if that would ruin anything with the flux or not. Honestly I think I would just wait out until I'm ready to spend the money on new backlights and then try it first.
@TheDarticus2 жыл бұрын
Hi Max - I think you run the risk of compounding the problem if you unseat those LED’s still in contact. Best to do a full replace if you have the time and can locate the part. Similarly I keep the backlight on low still. Best of luck and glad it’s working again.

After this fix, my screen now fluttering with black waves. I think maybe it’s a LED that’s burnt out. Why would it do that waving effect? How do I stop it?
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Bryka Hey, your LED strip is definitely malfunctioning. To properly fix you’d need to replace those components and possibly the LED driver board. I’ve noticing the same thing but intermittent and sometimes not at all for extended periods of time. You can always try and bake or cool theory of either shutting down and unplugging for an extended period of time or by keeping the set on for an extended period of time with high brightness. Good luck!
@phongtran6004 жыл бұрын
Matthew Dart I definitely experienced this after your fix, all I did was bring the brightness down to 0 which prevented the tv’s software from auto adjusting. At least that’s what I believe was happening and now I don’t get the waves no more.

Hey, Matthew i was just given a Sony XBR-65X900C with the dreaded 4 red light blinking routine. Should i plug the #2 error wire into a ground plug or cut strip and attach to the board screw on the left? Does it make a difference?..Thanks
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
John Nisyrios Hey John! Yeah, the more stock approach is to dislodge that position 2 BL_Err pin and place it into an empty ground slot. I have seen some just strip and wrap on a nearby grounded screw. Both options seem to work but I would prefer the stock approach in the long run in the event of a major static discharge. Let me know how it goes - I think you might have lucked out with acquiring the tv!
@johnnisyrios96684 жыл бұрын
@@TheDarticus it worked as described. BUT the bottom black flashes have begun intermittently , I assume that some of the backlight bar leds are bad. I searched and that is one tough part to find any repair suggestions?..Thanks
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
John Nisyrios Hey John, it’s likely the bar next to the mid point that’s flickering. I’ve found that’s where most of the heat is. I toyed with the idea of ordering the part from EBAY but they’re very hard to locate and you’d need to prove its operational. There is a video online that walks through changing out the LED strip in Spanish. I haven’t been successful at actually acquiring the part and Sony won’t sell it to you. I have considered heating up the bottom of the television with a heat gun and trying to reseat the LED’s but haven’t gotten around to trying.

Matthew, I had a hurricane surge last fall. It just turns off and on..... is this the same thing? If you could spare 5 mins to chat, I'd like to ask a few questions.
@TheDarticus4 жыл бұрын
Sean Gallagher Hey Sean, it’s funny you bring up the power surge scenario. My father has the same Bravia XBR only a larger one. Last year lightening struck the house (we live in Florida) and it sent a surge through the Ethernet port (I know strange). So first be sure you had a surge protector in place for the power. If so you can rule out the power board - for now. He had a repair technician replace nearly every logic board in the TV and they finally got it fixed after replacing two boards and the Input module. BUT! The firmware loaded wasn’t matching factory spec so they had to fool around with the firmware to have the new logic board to perform. Unfortunately you need to pull the back off and examine any components that may appear to have heat exposure or charring. If it was a direct hit you may be able to go the insurance route and claim it but be careful to check your policy as they have very specific provisions and your ‘wording’ has much to do with the outcome of the claim. Otherwise if it’s just randomly turning off without a discernible time frame or count, it’s triggering a shut down of one or more components. My suggestion is disassemble be sure all components are intact and no obvious signs of exposure and then work backwards. At what point does it shut down, how long will it stay on, can you change inputs, unplug all inputs and try a factory reset. If all of these fail, attempt my method as it can’t hurt and see if it gets you anything different. Good luck! I know exactly what you’re going through.

Matthew Dart will you call me ? 843-442-0972. I’d like to try to fix this.
