There's something about the video footage it produces that I really love. Characteristically low-res and choppy, but still clear and colourful. Potentially useful for a kind of artistic montage sequence? I remember in the film 'Thank You For Smoking', there's a montage sequence of travelling through LA, shot on a 2005 video-capable phone, and getting a cool, authentic, low-res look like that would be difficult without original hardware I think

The F505 is a favourite and I've now completed my own collection of the F series for some future videos! They all became more sophisticated over time, but the 505 and 505V were so small compared to the later ones. I've found about 9 out of 10 old cameras power up fine when given a new battery pack.

Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane! The P1 was my first digital camera, followed by the P10 and the P100 after that. The first real pocketable camera. I took it everywhere with me even if I had no plans to take pictures. Remember, it was the time before mobile phones. I can safely say the P1 triggered my love for photography. Before I liked it, but found it often to cumbersome shooting on film. No instant results, shops that developed the rolls wrong, shooting with the wrong ASA film etcetera. The P1 felt like a miracle machine that did away with all the shortcomings and frustration I experienced with the old cameras. Yes the P1 was not the first digital camera by a mile, but it was my first and although I do not have one anymore, it still is a camera that gives me very happy memories whenever it comes up somewhere. So again, thank you very much for bringing this lovely camera back into the spotlight again with this video. 😊

The P1 had great style and functionality. I got a Cybershot P92 in 2003 and used it for several years at home and during travels. Sony had a plastic adapter for tele and wide angle lenses which worked surprisingly well. It was a 5mp fixed focal length (though it did have a digital zoom) digital camera. But it also functioned as an mp3 player, a personal video player, it had some simple games on it, and it even had an av input so it could be used to digitize analogue video. I don't think it did any of these things very well, but I was always so fascinated by the number of uses it had. Excellent video, it's great to see how well the earliest digital cameras hold up by todays standards and learn their history, I never thought until recently back in 2000 digital cameras offered such decent looking images and come as sleek as the P1. Just a bit of an observation I noticed at 5:19 there's a fingerprint smudge on the lens which makes me wonder if that made some of your images a bit softer than the other camera on comparison or did you clean it before shooting? Anyhow I was recently given a P72 (made in 2003) and am using it alongside my Canon EOS200D II DSLR for a bit of fun and comparison, it can do 640x480 video and runs of 2x AA batteries. Have to say the 320x240 video on the P1 is still very watchable comparison to the woeful Nokia 6230 phone videos with a quality of a 128x96 resolution videos that are extremely compressed on top of that and are literally unwatchable lol.

Cool review, as you usually make, but I was surprised when I saw the lens with a finger print mark (around 5:17). I saw some contrast-less photos and I thought the lens had internal problems--I would've never imagine you'd let it get a finger print. Later in the video, it seems to be clean, and the contrast in some photos seem to look normal. Man, don't let a camera, under your possession, ever appear with its lens dirty again. That's a crime.

You're right, that does look like a big finger print! I've just checked it in real life and there was a really faint mark that I've now wiped off, but to be honest it was barely visible to the naked eye. The problem is how I film products with slightly over-sharpened 4k at very close range and with light reflected in a way that unfortunately exaggerates dust, scratches and other marks. Things always look worse in these clasps that they actually are!

Ahhh yes, the Sony DSC-P series. We bought a P10 in 2004 and used it for about 7 years. The P10 had the same styling as the P1 but in a thinner body. Dinky little thing it was. It had a 5MP CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.5" rear screen, completely useless OVF, and it saved files onto Sony's Memory Stick. The 5MP sensor produced some nice images in good light, but it did not have much dynamic range to work with when exposing for the highlights.

@DinoBytes Жыл бұрын
Hmm, that's odd, was your memory stick formatted by the camera and does it have image son there? It should just work as a standard USB drive when connected to a PC or Mac, but if not, you could always look into a separate USB Memory Stick card reader. I'd see if you can get it working on another computer first though as it should be ok.

@DinoBytes Жыл бұрын
Sony made so many different types of sticks. MG just referred to copy protection, mostly for music players and as far as I remember, didn't make a difference to cameras. So a stick with magicgate should work in any camera. If the card is small, a bit like SD, then it is a memory stick DUO, and you'll need a DUO adapter to work in these older cameras. You can get them on ebay or amazon second hand. If its bigger than 128gb though, older cameras won't recognise it.
