Sony E 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 lens review | Budget wide lens for a6300, etc.

Hello :) I was wondering, does the kit lens for a6300 make noise when shooting video on autofocus? (for instance, when the AF adjusts the focus, does it make sound/noise)

I've not had noise issues with it. Recorded lots of videos with this in AF mode and the camera's internal microphone.

I like this lens on my a6600 for video. The OSS and electronic zoom plus the light weight and small size makes this a nice choice because, it balances quite nicely on the smallish Zhiyun Crane 2 gimbal.

The aperture isn't great but the size and zoom range lead to it still being a very attractive lens.

In video mode can you manual focus and manual zoom?

Zoom can be pretty smooth if you use the button, but then the video will look like it was made in the 90s. (zooms in video just don't look good in my opinion.) And yes manual focus works in video mode but not very accurate.

manual focus is not very smooth on sony lenses, as it's all electronic.

This lens came with my A6000, wasn't a fan of it personally, although it can be fun at it's widest. They do have a bit of a reputation for breaking, mine did conveniently outside of warranty... I have just fixed it though, took it apart and disconnected the ribbon cables and re connected them all, seems fine now. Just something to keep in mind, probably not worth the risk buying used. I replaced it with the Zeiss 16-70 and love it, far superior! But then so is the price! Actually find the the Zeiss requires much less work in post and is all round just much better. Would love to get the 10-18 but it is just too expensive for me right now :(

The photo is not correct. That lens in that photo is something else completely, not 16-50mm. This lens is called Sony 16-50mm f3.5-5.6. If that's what you buy, that's what you should get. There is only one version of this lens that I know of. "Kit lens" just means a lens you buy together with a camera. There is no one correct "kit lens". Sony sells many different kit lenses. This 16-50mm was the kit lens on my Sony NEX-6.

not recommended. Just get a wide angle lens that fits direct to the camera.

I think the problem many have with this lens is the sheer pot luck as to whether you get a good one. And this brings into question the quality control of the production line for this lens, throwing in doubts as to its longevity even if you find a reasonably good one optically. For me, it was too soft for stills, but acceptable for video...just. Can't be bothered with returning and exchanging it x amount of times until finding a good one like some of my friends did. Forked out for the sigma instead and haven't looked back. Yeah, no OSS on the Sigma, but I shoot mainly stills so not a problem for me. When I go to video and need some stabilisation, I can do that in post, or I might then use the Sony kit lens.

Wider angle than competition's kit lenses is cool, but this lens has serious distortion (and vignetting and corner blur). It's fine for video if one does not need edge-to-edge sharpness, and not that great for photos. It's just acceptable (and for many uses unacceptable). Aperture very soon jumps to f/4 or more with zoom, which makes it unusable in low light situations, at least with older Sony's cameras. It's nice that it has optical stabilization.

How reliable is the continuous autofocus on the a7s? Also, does the OSS work in cropped mode on the a7s? thanks!

AF was pretty good. I didn't have issues. The OSS of this lens doesn't work at all on the A7 series.

My 10-18mm f4 OSS is supposed to be for APSc only, but it works perfectly on my A7S. Stabilization works and it even works in full frame mode up to about 12mm wide which is amazing on full frame. See my review.

It does not project an image large enough to cover the large sensor. It will have black corners.

E mount lenses fit crop sensor E mount cameras. FE lenses fit both E mount cameras and full frame FE mount cameras.
