I just ordered this lens. I usually use a Sigma 24-70 Art, but after a two all day long shooting in Berlin I realized how heavy this beast is. Since 35 mm is my favourite focal length anyway I finally decided to buy the Sony lens. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Yeah, the size is really nice and acceptable even for all day walking - I got it on my A7C now, and it's my all-round lens with it.

If this lens is anything like the 55/1.8 then it must be amazing. A friend of mine had the 55, spent a pretty penny on it when we were still in school, and it has such an awesome character and is so sharp from wide open.

It’s not far from that. I have to say the Ziess 55 is my personal most carried lens. It is so good.

Great production! Congrats on an awesome KZbin video. I was actually thinking of buying this lens, because I only have the 28-70 kit lens. I am primarily shooting talking head videos, but I just do not know, if I would get a sharper image with the FE 35 1.8, now that I already have the kit lens.

This lens beats the heck out of the G Master in terms of value but I'd still rather have the 40 G. The only negative is that you lose 2/3 a stop. On the positive side, it's 2/3 the weight and size plus you get slightly better compression.
@DigitalRetro Жыл бұрын
I have the 40 2.5G and 50 2.5G - they are great lenses for everyday use in terms of size and weight, but still the rendering from 35 1.8 is much more pleasing for me. Not to mention the faster AF on the 35 1.8.

If you had to choose between this and the Voigtlander 35… which one would you keep? I have the Sony 40mm 2.5 and Voigtlander 40 1.2 (which is amazing but sometimes a little heavier than I want to carry). The Sony 40 is impressive, but the 2.5 a little restricting. Considering selling it for one of the 35s.
@DigitalRetro Жыл бұрын
That`s a tough choice. I have both Sony 35 1.8 and Voigtlander 35 1.4. I love Voigtlander`s classic rendering, manual focusing and small size. But if I had to pick one - I guess I`d go for Sony 35 1.8 - it`s got great rendering, it`s sharp, lightweight, decent focusing distance and a dead silent AF.

I order a sigma 35mm dg dn F1.4 but they send the wrong lens i ended buying this lens and i'm happy with it it's small light good quality i'm thinking that carry a heavy lens just to have that f1.4 is not the way to go f1.8 lenses are made for a reason and a good reason too to buy one is i saved 200€

I had the Sigma 35mm 1.4 dg dn some time ago. Sold it after like 1 year of use. I'm not missing it at all. And I know if I'd sold 35 1.8, I would def regret it.

@@DigitalRetro I've also switched from 1.4 Sigmas to 1.8 sony lenses after like 10 years of wedding and event videography and photo. Nobody is paying me extra to carry a really heavy bag all day long. And nobody cares about 1.4 or 1.8. Definitely not the customers. When it's too dark for the 1.8, then 1.4 is not gonna give really good results either, just a bit better. And now with AI noise reduction it's really doesn't matter.

Thanks for the review. Do you think this would be good for the type of videos that I make? I’m wondering why a lot of reviews don’t mention video. Makes me think this is mainly a photography lens for some reason I’m currently using iPhone 13 trying to upgrade to the a7iv

Have you had the opportunity to test out the Samyang 35mm v-af cine lens? At $649 I'm torn between this sony 35mm f1.8 and that one. Using it for both photos and videos.

You say this lens is for the amateur and semi-professional. Just curious, what 35 mm lens (Sony e-mount) would be for the professional?
@DigitalRetro6 ай бұрын
I treat this lens as an amateur/semi-pro general use glass. I think pros use specific lenses depending on the job - which means they can of course use this lens, too, however for example for professional works, I'd use something like 35 1.4 GM for stills and eg. Samyang XEEN 35, NISI Athena T1.9, or just Sony's Cinema SEL C lens for video - basically something that has full manual control over the image, as 35 1.8 is fully wired with just focusing ring(although it's pretty good)

@DigitalRetro2 ай бұрын
Thank you! The shot at 3:00 was shot on 1.8 so there's a very shallow DOF, so it would be impossible to make the whole face in focus. Still I wanted to show how sharp this lens is at 1.8 when pinpointing the eye. Cheers!

Hi bro, thanks for your video. How about auto focus on A7II in photos and video? For example the FE 50mm don't work on both modes
@DigitalRetro Жыл бұрын
Hi there! This lens has probably the fastest AF on the A7II I used - the photo AF is lightning quick, for video, well considering A7II is rather poor in terms of video AF, but this lens manages to do the job(except you need to film fast moving objects)

A7C with 35 1.8 is a awesome combo! I almost always shoot on Aperture Mode, with ISO ranging from 100-640(but this value can be higher on A7C as it has better sensor and won`t cause too much detail loss). It really depends on the outside conditions - I mostly shoot outdoor portraits(golden hour or cloudy days) and very rarely use flash. Sometimes I use reflector to boost some areas with additional light. I leave most of the settings for the camera and do RAW postproduction.

Do you think this would be good on my fx30 , I don’t usually jump at full frane lenses , but this was seems better then the sigma 30
@DigitalRetro Жыл бұрын
I had the Sigma 30 1.4 and this lens is really good - especially for the video. I used it with my A6100 on gimbal and the video work was really smooth. The AF was great and reliable. The 35 1.8 will have better focusing and close focusing disance, and overall better ergonomics. The Sigma`s price is better, but I guess the Sony`s rendering is more "cinematic" and as a native lens will work better overall with the FX30. ps. I`m jealous about your FX30 :>

You were going very well at the beginning up until you said the lens is "dedicated to photography amateurs and semi professionals", so a "full professional" wouldn't use this? They only use "stupid" high expensive gear? If the gear is good enough and it doesn't limit me or my work then there's absolutely no need to dish out extra money on more expensive gear.
@DigitalRetro Жыл бұрын
Yep, as you wrote, I said it is dedicated to semi-pros and amateurs, but I didn`t say a professional can`t use it. It may be used by pros for less demanding work as well, where they dont need the more expensive gear. However a "full profesional" will probalby have the more powerfull stills/cine lenses and cameras to their disposal for serious/more demanding projects. I really like this lens, but I will never place it(as well as Sony does when advertising this lens) on the professional gear shelf.
@photobatya Жыл бұрын
Professional is someone who earns money with photo and videos, also, a professional can do better stuff with very basic tools. So the question is why should you spend more money if your clients cant see the difference. There are a bunch of GAS victims who thinks if they buy the most expensive gear they will be pro. iPhone Pro. For professional scrolling? iMac Pro… come on) professionals are using hackintosh with calibrated display. I have seen a lot of very weak photos on flicker made with GM glass and A1 cameras… just a marketing

I have the 40 G since a year but I also bought the 35 f1.8 to compare them. 35 f1.8 is soft at f1.8 and also at f2, it has got CA until f2.5, where it is a little bit sharper than the 40 G. 40 G is enough sharp wide open, sharper than 35 wide open. However it has got only 7 blades it has got longer focal length, so better bgr compression which helps to have the same bokeh than the 35! I didn't believe it and I said f**k Sony while it made a G lens with 7 blades, but it works. Af speed is noticeable faster in 40 G and it is totally mum, while 35 has got a little af noise in videos. Which one to choose? I donno. Honestly for me the softness until f2 in 35mm isn't acceptable. If you create videos this softness helps to get natural cinematic look. I made a little video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5arnnymeNCAgac
