I will say… the Sony app is WAYY better than the BMPCC app! What are you thoughts on both cameras?

Love that you’ve been able to use the camera for an extended time. I’ve been using the a7siii for everything. Ideally would like an fx6 but love being able to use a minimalist stripped down cam or built out on rig if needed.

Keep both. I think they are different tools for different jobs. Gotta look into the Sony app. I really like the BM app especially after the last update. Plus the BM app almost makes using the camera screen null. Almost.

I have the 6K Pro and love the image but the lack of autofocus in my most run and gun situations is killing me. It's also quite heavy. I want to keep it simple and light. Was initially looking at the C70 but will probably get the FX3...will miss built in NDs. Decisions.

I own the BM 6K pro for ten months now. I love the very bright (flipable) monitor, false colour, the ND and double xlr outs. This will be my favourite workhorse for the next years. BM-Raw is outstanding in quality and post workflow. I never had overhaeting problems so far. Yes I´ve heared of several Sony cams with overheating issues, including the new Sony a4 (especially with external recorders). Even my older Sony FS5 ii shutted down two times during a shot in summer. I´ve never seen a Sony menu which is intuitive to handle. But they are getting better in the upper alpha series. For weddings and some action stuff, I sometimes wished an autofocus, but these situation are really rare in the work I´m doing, nothing I can`t handle with a good pulling system. On gimbals I use the BM 4K, which works well., but I have to use an external monitor.

I have owned the FX3 for nearly a year now, I was one of the first to purchase it. I use Sony microphones so they fit without having to buy a rubber insert. I use a PORTKEYS LEYE EVF which gives me False colour, and wonderful vision. Originally Premier pro struggled with HS codex but they updated, and it works super fast now. Since having the FX3, I can't remember using manual focus. ( several of my camera operator friends still do, old habits die hard.. ) I will not buy a lens which is not AF any more. Lastly I have settings in MY Menu, such as Format, and some other. I use the main menu, one in a blue moon. I have subscribed to you, and shared you're video to my FX3 Facebook group. Good video!

You gotta be the only person I’ve seen that LIKES the old Sony menu system. I’ve setup the quick menu to bypass the endless menu scrolling. I agree with every other point you made! Really enjoyed this! I own the FX3 and my rebuttal/agreements are as follows: - Menu system is annoying but you can really customize the physical keys and sub menu when you hit the function key to keep things quick. - SUPER ANNOYING with the handle not fitting LITERALLY THEIR OWN MICROPHONE?! (How Sway?) But the fix is to buy the little silicon grips, you can get them from B&H for pretty cheap but yea...HATE that. - FX3 also does come with gamma assist as a quick feature as well so if you're shooting log or HLG you can see it with that. That being said, curious to know which camera you shot your talking head with for this video, also love your critique about false color. - FX3 is hella sharp, I've seen other people mess with the internal camera settings to reduce it because yeah they'd rather sharpen in post so the picture stays hella soft and gives that "cinematic" look - I noticed your note about proxies and I couldn't tell if you were creating them yourself in Premiere or attaching them in post but the FX3 does shoot proxies and Premiere seems to work well with them on my end. Thanks for the video! Super bummed we couldn't connect in New York at the Adobe event because I want to officially meet you IRL but i'm sure one day our paths will cross.

Hey hey!! I’m super sad I couldn’t be there 😭😭. I actually met you before indirectly but it was super long ago, so hopefully we have a chance soon!! We’re so close!!! Lol But yes the customization is great! Bmpcc has customization buttons as well but it’s just something about also overall having such an easier menu when all your buttons are being used by other controls lol I always use gamma assist. I’m just not a huge fan of histogram. But it def does help! I shot this video with the fx3 and used the monitor plus app and used false color on there to make sure I wasn’t over or underexposed. I haven’t used the proxies in cam just yet I’m always nervous that it will take up more space on my card. But what I love is that with my bmpcc I don’t have to make proxies at all. I have the r6 and the proxies workflow is annoying. But shooting for a film creating proxies on all that footage I would wonder if it’s worth it space wise to do in camera? And I hate that this camera is so sharp lol. Always gotta keep that pro Mist on deck. I also switched my settings to try making it more cinematic but I just feel the overall highlight roll off and feel of the bmpcc gives a more filmic vibe. That’s why I feel they both are good just depending on what I’m doing. But I’m going to keep testing the fx3 and playing with it! Because it’s a great camera to have! And recently I found out about the silicon so I was happy about that!!! Lol.

Love the content, definitely subscribing. I will say that, after owning both cameras…the blackmagic image is fantastic and really does feel different when you get it back into the edit and start working it. I find the Sony image less inspiring but I also find the Sony cameras overall to be a little more compete as an image capturing device. It’s not the prettiest image, doesn’t have Fuji or blackmagic character, but the latest Sony cameras DO excel at making it easy to actually acquire the image. Low light, battery life, autofocus and lens lineup are all things that when I’m actually shooting make my life just a little easier. I guess what I’m saying is that I prefer the fx3 to the blackmagic when I’m out in the field or packing up a small travel friendly kit, but then when I’m editing and color grading, I wish I had the blackmagic image. All trade offs and compromises. Great video!

I love this! I agree! The fx3 workflow is amazing when in the field. Easy to use, smaller, more versatile. But i don’t know if I’m ready to compromise the blackmagic image for everything else haha. But this was a great way to put it!

I posted this on another one of your videos but I'll post it here too. This is in regards to the lack of False Color: Since you use the FX3 I thought I’d mention this in case you wanted an accurate IN CAMERA way to measure the exposure for skin tones (or really anything in your scene that falls within a certain IRE range). You can use Zebras to achieve this. For anyone else reading this that’s a Sony user (but this also applies to any camera that lets you set custom zebra ranges) you first you want to find the middle grey point (the middle point on the light to dark scale) for the gamma/picture profile you are using; skin tones should fall within this middle range. You would then set one of your custom zebra settings to ‘Standard Range’ and use the middle grey point for the gamma you’re using. And you’d use the +/- setting as a sort of feather to gauge roll off from that point. Slog3 for example, has a middle grey point of 41%. Slog benefits from overexposure so you can set your ‘Standard Range’ zebra somewhere between 50-55%. Let’s say you went with 52% and a +/- range of 2. That means your zebras will be metering from 50-54%. Now you can use a grey card and put it in the scene you’ll be filming in OR use the person you’ll be filming and adjust your exposure until you see zebras show up on the card or on your subject. When you see the zebras you have accurate exposure because that is the middle grey range you’ve specified. Now, this still isn’t as good as false color. It doesn’t show the transitions between the light and dark points of the ENTIRE scene the way false color does. However, this setting combined with your second custom Zebra slot which can be configured to ‘Lower Limit’, can be used to see if anything in the shot is overexposed. Between these two things you can expose your shot very well and very quickly. And of course you can use gamma assist, the histogram and the camera meter as well. But you are correct, the histogram and the meter are assessing the entire shot not a specific part of it. You can use spot metering but that still isn’t accurate like you using zebras or false color is. So just some additional info for anyone who doesn’t have a camera or monitor with false color.

Nice review. Just wanted to mention something regarding the grain on the high ISO. As you know cinema cameras are created with the purpose of capturing maximum detail with the least processing possible. Therefore Blackmagic cameras, as cinema cameras, do not apply any denoise post to the image capture. In addition, the data rate is also very high exactly to preserve any detail. On the other hand, all mirrorless and most Sony cameras apply a denoise filter during image processing, and then finally compression depending on the codec. This processing significantly reduces the grain but also the fine detail on the image and it's not reversible. With the Blackmagic you have the choice to retain the grain or remove it later in post with better non real-time noise reduction algorithms. Once de-noise is applied in post, the Blackmagic can even come out much better thanks to the more sophisticated noise reduction algorithm. Besides, the BMPCC4K and 6K sensors are from Sony anyways :)
@professionalpotato4764
@professionalpotato4764 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, not quite. The only reason BM has been able to get away with internal raw and not get sued by RED is cos the camera debayers and applies noise reduction in-camera that cannot be turned off. It's just a little to circumvate the stupid RED patent, but it is there. All other RAW formats are debayered in post. Check out "The DP Journey" where he shows ProRes RAW is technically more RAW than BRAW. But for all intents and purposes, BRAW is practically a good enough RAW for most.

Great review, thanks for taking the time to share. Since I know nothing about the FX3, I would have liked to seen something that compared the codec offerings of both. I believe the FX3 does h.264 and maybe a Sony proprietary codec? Either way, depending on your workflow and software preference, that can make a huge difference in choice of camera as well. BRAW is a dream to work with in Resolve, but I'm guessing the Sony codec offering can be used across all software and not just Resolve only, especially if it's h.264, but we all know that h.264 is not an edit friendly codec. Maybe keep this in mind if you decide to do another comparison video between these cameras or any other ones. Thanks again for the info!
@BrittneyJanae
@BrittneyJanae 2 жыл бұрын
Hey I didn’t want to get into all that because there are so many videos that talk about that. This was strictly just what I liked and don’t like about the camera. The codec is also a preference thing. I could talk about how the braw is so much better and show the diff codecs but there are people who prefer h.264. The comparison was a personal what I like and don’t like about the camera

@@BrittneyJanae I have to be honest… I thought it was overkill. Don’t think I will need a main cam for a minute. With my first BM it was straight Noob mistakes and not grasping continuous AF for the environment. I went all in… down the rabbit hole 💰🤬. Then insert Sony and it locked and didn’t let go. But the BM taught me about lens adapters and crop factor and not being scared of that MF. (And M4/3 … step children need love too!😃🤷🏾‍♂️) Onto this A1. It’s everything I could ask for with an okay display. But I upgraded from smallHD to ninja V. It’s not a BM display OR menu. I wasn’t a stills person.. but Ohhhhh boy…. Guess I just needed the right catalyst. I see myself “including”more stills with the Engineering tech stuff we do. (We are a strange bunch😂) I still don’t think I’ve seen a fast natural smooth focus like this. I thought the A9 II and Canon was “IT”. Would tell anyone to “hush” 🤫. (The FX3 video focus is so damn close it’s a matter of settings) And you know the tighter(open) that aperture is that’s often requested you can be out of focus so easy ESPECIALLY if subj is wearing a hat. (Projecting here😊.. maybe my skills) But it locks in the eye even with glasses. I’m ranting because I’m obsessed with inanimate object. But it’s all that. (And the GM lens is another topic…) I’d tell anyone to rent one first. I lucky and was able to splurge. Also, Don’t sleep on how fast the wireless is. I’d NEVER even think of that as a feature is but once you use it… and for the geeks.. the camera remote SDK is sick. (But it’s a Sony thing… not A1) Have the best weekend. Can’t wait to see the content in 2022! Glad I found the channel

I noticed you used to use the c200 as your main cam, I'm curious about your thoughts on the c70 when compared to the bmpcc 6k/fx3 and if you have interest/have used that camera before, especially now that it has RAW internal
@BrittneyJanae
@BrittneyJanae 2 жыл бұрын
I have used it sparingly but not really interested in it. I don’t really care what’s really true RAW. I’m not that technical. I’m more of a fan of how blackmagic interprets colors via its sensor and the image quality I get from that camera. I haven’t seen much yet from the c70 that has really wow’d me honestly. The 6k workflow has just been great to me.

@BrittneyJanae
@BrittneyJanae 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t used the a7siii but the reason I chose to test the fx3 over the a7siii is because one I didn’t want mirrorless even know the fx3 could also be considered that. I don’t take photos with Sony cameras so it wasn’t a need to get the a7siii. I love the gulf of the fx3 with the threads attached to the body. And the fact that it already comes with the xlr input + handle

@ 11:07 a nicer solution would be "rubber grommets." You can buy a cheap box of them with multiple sizes. At least one should fit around the microphone and add enough girth to let you clap down securely. I used some for my C300 mic holder. I'd link you but link messages tend to disappear on KZbin.

I think also because the black magic is a dedicated video camera vs the fx3 that leans towards video but can also but used for photography. Therefore you have a come congested menu to support both. That’s almost with any Sony camera even the Sony. A7Siii. Same with my A1 and A7RV.

I enjoy my Pocket 6Ks and Pocket 4K. I think the misconception that people have is that you have to rig these cameras to death and you don't. Sometimes I just put my mic on top thread. And keep 6 batteries. That's it. And honestly, I'm tired of folks telling other folks that they aren't authentic "filmmakers" because they use IBIS or AF. It's a tool there for those that need/want it. Focus less on critiquing people's kits, and focus more on telling great stories. Too many folks got hella gear and their reels are shit.

I am struggling to choose. I have a ton of Canon EF lenses, and the filmic quality of the BM is just incredible. But the design of the FX3 and getting Prores out of it for someone editing in Final Cut makes me lean towards the FX3. Do you think the next version of the BM will have RF mounts, or do you think they'll stick with an 'almost vintage' lens mounting system? Also, focusing, and stabilisation as options. I like having options. It's only the image quality that I fear is not on par with the BM when comparing the two. But, image quality is such a huge deal.

The fx3 to my knowledge doesn’t have pro res internally. The bmpcc has prores and braw internally. I don’t know if bm would go rf but I use a lot of my canon EF lenses with my bmpcc and my Sony. I would hope they go pl over rf. Honestly I love the image of the bmpcc and I love the fx3. I love using the fx3 because it’s so easy but then when I go back to my blackmagic pocket nothing can beat the image quality to me. So it’s super hard. Glad I have both! The fx3 I use for quick things like BTS and etc and when I want to get more of a cinematic filmic look I stick with the blackmagic so for short films and etc.

Sony saw the BTS I did for some other clients and wanted to hire me. Just make sure if you want to do it for films, don’t do all the gimmicks and effects. Tell a story with your BTS! @@babakkhosravi9979 Hey I don't like using gimbals. I also wouldn't use an fx3 for a big production. I would use an Arri or some sorts and hire a crew. I don't agree with your definition of what a real camera is. I actually don't like that the fx3 is sharper and I don't think it has better codec so we just won't see eye to eye on this sorry. I think you're focused on the "on paper technicals". I'm focused on actually using these cameras and what has worked in the production space. But any camera that you buy that you can shoot with is a real camera. Now maybe you should change your wording to what you think a CINEMA camera is and maybe I would understand.
