Shot on the FX30, pretty impressed with the image quality!!! Crazy dynamic range for it being an APSC sensor. Was able to really stretch the shots while keeping natural contrast. Can see it being pushed the most in that sunset shots.. was able to bring my face up a lot, just needed good bit of noise reduction.

As far as the whole weird gear racism towards each other ... I think a big part of what fuels that is exactly what you said, when people aren't actually artists/storytellers then their job is to be a technician. Technicians are rarely artists. So technicians are going to focus and debate and even attack primarily on technical things ... artists do the same thing, just about the artistic aspects. Actual artists/storytellers are a supreme minority on KZbin and especially in the comments ... I mean how many people are making KZbin videos about how to tell a great story? And who can actually tell a great story? Not many ... hence the gear wars, where the bell curve of the hobby/industry works within.

Also, 12.8k ISO is the GOAT. I thought it would be goofy and was a weird number to use before i got my first a7siii, but using it in the field was AMAZING. It's like carrying extra lights with you, lol. So helpful for run and gun

Great message. It’s not about the gear. It’s about the story and the gear is there to help you capture that story. Lots of great gear out there and the Sony’s fixed things that bothered me from their last family (the FS series) I own the FX9 and am still very happy with it. And rent higher end gear when budgets and needs ask for those.

I loved the electronic nd on my old FS5, the nd was so fun. I would map it to the hand grip dial to the ND vs aperture, since I tend to change my apeture less in general. One of the big reasons I really fell in love with the C300 mark III and the C500 mark II was the ergonomics. They are a little heavier than the fx6 when the battery and grip are attached, but stipped down the just the small battery, a lightweight grip and the 4.3" inch monitor everything felt really nice. Of course a C500 camera package is a lot more than an FX6 package, and even if you go for the c300, you could buy two fx6's for that as well. I invested before the FX6 existed, and even as a FS5 shooter, I wasn't happy about the ergonomics of the FX9 when it shipped and since I already had a lot of Canon glass it made sense to invest in the ergonomics on the Canon side anyway. I still miss the electronic vnd but having a boxy camera with a balanced grip and full-size xlr on the body was just a great fit for me. Don't sleep on the little button in the hand grip, you can set it manually to a number of functions including a "Push AF/Push MF" toggle, to enable af when you want, or switch back to manual, it's behaviour changes depending on what mode is enabled (I may not be remembering correctly but the manual has more details). Nice for grabbing focus quickly, but having it be manual by default. There is also a "Push Auto Focus (AF)" mappable button, so you can just push it to grab focus, and when you let go it goes back to manual. Overall I have to agree to you large point of view. It's more about finding the tools that get out of your way and let you work. Even tho I heavily invested in Canon, I didn't even bother with the R5C because it's heavily neutered without CLOG2. CLOG3 is at least 2 stops or more clamp curve wise vs SLOG3, it's just a massive difference that's it's almost not even bothering with. Thanks for making great stuff, can't wait to see more of you doc stuff come down the pipe.

As a fellow FX6 owner, shooting client commercial work and fashion editorial vids, 2 quick tips: 1.) you mention no “auto tracking”; there is a pseudo ‘quick’ way to engage a similar feature, between adding a few key AF features to preset buttons . . . If you haven’t yet, watch Philip Bloom’s “Sony FX6 AF” tutorial videos . . . He explains his system for setup and tracking AF, which I’ve adopted, and works like a dream for quickly jumping to a ‘tracking’ scenario 2.) I’ve owned all kinds of monitor arms, and by far and away, the Tilta Mini Articulating Arm is incredible . . . Works with my Atomos V+ and SmallHD monitors, mounts anywhere, Arri locating pins, small and svelt, strong like Avedon. ✌🏻

Good stuff Cam. Definitely agree with 8:15 and I'd say a lot of the camera hate BS is coming from people who are not making a consistent living shooting. Pros are looking for what works the best for their job and intentions, period. Whatever provides the best workflow and is most efficient for the job is what is used. When you're too busy making art and/or money, you don't have time to argue semantics that do not matter on Facebook groups all day. This is the first camera gear video I've watched in a year and I'm a lot happier now since I got away from the endless gear discussion and battles. So much time wasted discussing minutia that simply didn't matter in the field. I bought every mirrorless/cine cam under the sun and ended up wanting to simplify things by going (Sony) mirrorless with a couple zooms and moving on with life unless a job requires otherwise. I love the 'texture' of the image with cameras like the Komodo, but Sony can do it all when you need it to and thats realistically good enough for me.

Everything You Wanted to Know About the SONY FX9 and Were Too Embarrassed to Ask! You are going to marry that camera man! Yes, the variable ND is a life changer! Did you say noise at 800 in the car shot? It reminds me of the RED epic, that camera was noisy in the shadows. Maybe you need to overexpose it a bit to get clean shadows. Keep up the good work man. Haha yup! The chroma noise reminds me of red RAW in general. But yes I would say exposing as far right as possible on any camera is going to give you cleaner exposures.

I'm so stoked for you that you FINALLY got a video camera and are pumped about it! I know you have created great work still with any camera and even back in the XT3 days but jazzed this opened up more opportunity for your film style. I know you did like the R5c and I'm currently looking at it or maybe the Sony A7Rv because I do still need and want photo still. Oh man that switch is a tricky one. I think if you’re wanting to expand further into video… and don’t plan on doing any client work.. either or is fine. But if you’re planning on/ are already doing client work.. Sony all the way. I’m sure eventually canon will be forced to support 3rd party lenses and to stop throttling their cameras. But they’re gonna have to loose even mroe sales before that happens. Which is ridiculous and jsut rather not give my money to a company like that

@@cammackey right on.... I used to be into booking clients but I went a different direction with my career path. So now I'm mainly looking for an all around camera to just travel with, document fun adventures maybe shoot some adventure sports ect and my 5 month old daughter as she grows up and vacations we go on... . I do still love hiking, shooting auto racing, car clubs, portraits and if I WANT to pick up a small client here or there for some stills or some promo video for IG or web stuff I have the camera and capability, but yeah I don't rely on photo / video work as a source of income at the moment. And looking for something that would be Tech proof for many years to come and just last.

@@jdpst20 sounds like you’d be fine with either or!! I’d either rent both or at least try to get your hands on both to see what fits your comfort better. I like canons robust feel but Sonys are more compact which I like just as much. For video, Sony wins. For photos, the canon is a little more of a enjoyable experience because their screens and viewfinders are beautiful. But other than that for photos it’s all the same shit honestly. For menu systems.. their both extremely diff but both can be learned easily if you just take the time. Obviously for lenses.. Sony has all the options.

I'm leaning more towards the Canon mainly because I still have a canon 1n 35mm film camera I love shooting so I could technically get EF glass or Sigma or Tamron for both systems using an ND adaptor for RF to EF and be set. I do like Canon for it's robustness as I've owned a 5D2/3 and 1dxii in the past and they are just bomb proof it feels like where Sony to me feels a bit fragile like the XT3 sometimes. The a7rV has alot of rolling shutter. So if you do alot of camera movements you are better of somewhere else. The a7iv would be better as a hybrid and alot cheaper.

Tough one! I have an FX3 and a C70. FX3 is way more versatile with its high ISO capabilities. But in most normal shooting situations I prefer the look of the image that comes off of the c70. The DGO sensor is special. That being said I find myself using the FX3 more and more and gravitating toward Sony more.

Yeah the footage that comes from the C70 is gorgeous, but in comparison to the FX3/FX6 full frame sensor.. you just get way more versatility and still a great image either way.

The FX30 body is great. It actually had a lot of dynamic range, gets a little noisy when stretching it but thats kind of normal for most cameras. The Canon C70 is the only camera ive used that can be cleanly stretched without being in RAW. But id honestly would just get the FX3 over the FX30. Way more versatility. If youre on a budget, id look into the A7SIII before the FX30 too.

You can change the zoom rocker to Clear image zoom. So any prime can zoom 1.5x times without loss of quality for what i've seen in my footage.

FYI what he says: Cinema movies are very bright - I can concur after working for over a decade on US cinema sets here in Canada. They bring in a ton of light and cut it - the reason being that they want saturation of color in shadows and no clipped data (ie shadows look amazing). I was watching an EU made movie shot on an Alexa, probably with a lot of daylight, and it doesn't even come close to the US filmic look - although it looks good.

Being myself on both Canon & Sony the points being made are pretty valid. The auto E-ND is a total game changer, what a feature. Dual ISO is also clutch. And of course the DR which for your type of outdoor shooting really benefits from the extra stops. Your R5C footage was looking a little crunchy at times. I think you said you also had an FX30? I'm sure it makes a good B-cam. Hope you do a video on that one and maybe compare the IQ to FX6.

Agreed. The R5C footage could only be stretched so much. Could tell the Clog3 was just throwing out information in the lower end and just clipping them. But yeah, Sony loaned me an FX30 for a week. I requested it since I sold off all my gear and needed something last minute to film my road trip. Now after using it, I def could of jsut used my A7RV. But I feel weird using my work cameras for KZbin videos. So I might just buy an FX3 now

@@cammackey A74 might be a good all-rounder for your youtube stuff, rolling shutter is not great, but the dynamic range is even better than the FX3 thanks to all the downsampling! Fx3 has the Lut preview function and cine EI though :/ I was watching a CVP video on the A74 vs FX3, and I was blown away that there is an entire extra stop and some change in the shadows of the A74 and that's what made me get it instead because I live for the DR lol

The quality and versatility of modern cameras are ridiculously good, whatever the brand. I gravitate toward Sony nowadays because of the ease of use, but I know I can get similar quality out of another brand.

Great camera, it didn't really click with me, took it for a test drive for a couple days and was like 'Nah'. On paper, it's stunning. Went C70 in the end, plenty of things I don't like, but for all those moments, getting the footage into DaVinci I'm reminded I made the right decision! RF glass is cool, got plenty of EF to adapt, I feel like the extra stop of DR goes a long way, DGO is beast, screen is a more secure in the latest manufactures and the recent updates have been nice for codec flexibility 🫶

I have an R5c and I'm considering selling it and going the Sony route as well. I've been very impressed with the images coming from the newer Sony cams. My main gripe is that the Canon Cinema's autofocus just isn't cutting it. I have yet to do a tracking shot or a push-in shot without it losing focus on my subject. The only problem is that I'm HEAVILY invested in Canon glass and own multiple Canon bodies for my wedding business.

Well said 👏 Yes, do not attach the monitor to the hot-shoe … it has electronics in there / is very delicate - I know people that broke theirs I use a magic arm connected to the top plate and the balance ends up better than if you attach it to the hot shoe anyway

Got any pics? I tried side mounting and hated it. My monitor has fell off twice from the hot shoe too. It’s very annoying haha. I’m sure there has to be a solution. I can’t do magic arms either cause I need something that’s super quick and nimble to adjust

Yes it does, but the screen that comes with the camera isnt great for outdoors. So rather ditch it the screen and use an external monitor. Which would require to be able to engage tracking via a button

Yeah it’s wild they did that!! Like we’re gonna give you the perfect camera, but expect this one itty tiny little thing. I mean I’ll still take that over all the crippling canon does. And yes the Tracking on Toggle!!!!! I used that so much on the A7RV. Those running horses in the begging were with the RV and Sony 100-400. Used the viewfinder and used the Tracking on Toggle. Made life so easy haha

Did you ever shoot with clog1 in darker situations? I found with my Canon R5 when I use clog1 in dark situations I can go up to 12,800 with no noise. Clog3 is best for day where it handles highlights better. Just my experience. In comparing the Canon R5 to my Sony A7SIII the image at 12,800 is better on the R5. This is even in Slog3. I do really love how easy it is to bring down the highlights and push the gamma up to get the face detail back when shooting with window light coming through. The R5 doesn’t do good in that situation.

Clog 1 is better in low light because it’s chopping out a few stops of dynamic range in the shadows.. i would prefer to not do that haha. They’re straight up just cutting off the noise floor and stealing away multiple stops in the low end. Where on the Sony they keep all that info in there while also keeping the noise down. This is my issue with canon….

I see you run a portkeys monitor, not sure if you're aware , but the newer portkeys monitor LH5P II you can control focus and do touch af, so you could ditch the fx6 monitor.

Yes I owned it for a month. It was great. But I didn’t care for the ergonomics. And the screen was very fragile. And I rather have full frame so I can use a variety of lenses. And the FX6 just has more to offer, as I show in this video.

I’ve been using V90 SD cards with zero issues :) and I’m shooting I the XF AVS ALL-I. I think 120fps is where you run into issues with the V90 cards but everything else is safe.

Lower sensitivity on the transmitter, mic under the flanel shirt, you should be fine. I did a shoot on a beach with 25mph winds clean. I love the Natives Culture and Arts . Keep it up.

Canon takes the consumers feedback and dump it in the trash while Sony actually listens to its customer and make improvements. I remember people for years wanted a built-in ND filter, two years later, Sony came up with it, they wanted Dual ISO, done ... Sony is definitely more consumer focused vs. Canon who used put 10 Focus area points in 6D and tell people pay extra for 5D if you more focus points? Clearly after a decade, we see where Sony stands.

Tell me about it haha. At some point, my career took over my preferences. As I keep saying, since October when I got out on a project that open a flood gate to pursuing my dream projects.. my needs changed. I am so fueled up and never felt so dedicated. All the KZbin BS and silly shit talking went out the door. As I’ve always said, any camera these days can get the job done. Even cropped Fuji cameras. But now I’m shifting to documentary’s and that requires a whole new set of tools.

Congrats, which project was it? I’ve used FX6 on a documentary in Asia, 35 days of filming all the time in harsh sun and then right into dark interiors. The ease of switching on this variable ND and then right into 12.800 does it for me, everything under finger tip easy to set it in seconds. Plugging lav mics to the cam plus shot gun. Just perfect for one man bands. And I also use it for TV shows a lot. The down side is that some buttons get flimsy rather quick, but the form factor….

Thank you 😢😢😢 also, is it just me or can you notice a difference in dynamic range from my previous videos?? I was using the FX30 to film this video and the dynamic range is crazy. I was able to pull out a lot of detail from the shadows too, but it was pretty noisy. But I rather have that than with my canons where the shadows would just be clipped. I miss my Fuji XH2S already but think imma get a FX3 for these KZbin videos

@@cammackey Yes, that XH 2S's dynamic range is amazing, it also has raw. The dynamic range is definitely better, I saw some videos on R5 especially where the shadows were totally gone. I think the BSI sensor is a reason for that. I wonder if you shot on prores or xavc codec internally. That noise reduction control tab on fx 6 is amazing, I just wish I had it on my a7Siii. What is your opinion on XH 2S's grading, I don't use Fuji, I am just curious to know your opinion.

Like even when I did CST to Arri.. it still had this specific look. Not good or bad, just specific. Like maybe not as manipulative as other logs, but still super good.

Great video. I think the definition of an artist, hobbyist and a professional should be outlined a bit. I do not make the majority of my income from photography so by some professional's opinions, I am not a professional. I started as a hobbyist but because I am an artist. LOL. Now I have more knowledge and experience than some hobbyists and some professionals in my area but their incomes are solely photography but they aren't artists. OMG! LOLOL! Some do get board and listen to their clients and expand after becoming board OR photography changes them. At the end of the day, we are all consumers and all of us can be drawn to a product regardless of our starting points. The guy taking images of his kids, the "mom-tog" and the once "arrogant" artist (your word) that has new needs? Get after it! All of our needs change and IMO, it doesn't matter the starting place. Everyone is welcome to start their journey from whatever place and stop when they choose :).
