Sony Has A PS4 Problem

An issue was discovered with the PlayStation 4 that could end up making the system unusable years later after Sony moves on. The issue appears to be with the system itself losing sync with the servers, but what happens if those servers aren't there anymore to sync to? Today we'll go over what's going on and simulate the scenario Ps4 owners could face someday.

@@BeatmasterAC PS3 and 360 just continued what was happening on the OG Xbox with digital content downloaded from the store. Then came paid DLCs, patches. On PS4 and Xbox One due to higher bandwidth the patches ballooned in size. Don't need to bring PC into this discussion, it always had issues with many games needing patches to run well. As for DRM, it's nasty, I agree, but tolerable on an open system like PC, where piracy is easier. On a closed system like the PS4 it doesn't make sense.

Also because the dvd discs are becoming obsolete and arent fast enough for the graphically advanced games today. Thats why consoles have to download it all from the disc and just play it off the hard drive, the disc is merely a plastic key at this pont.

Lmao, the PS2 is their best selling console and they've shutdown servers for all the Socom games even though Socom 2 had thousands of people playing it regularly. Gran Turismo 5 is the best selling game on PS3, and the servers for that game were shutdown. Sony shuts down more servers than EA. Difference with Streaming is the service doesn't get old so companies have to close it and the streaming service doesn't run out of battery either. So Streaming is fine. Physical console games (especially newer ones) are mostly useless as lots of them need content downloaded to work or patches to fix serious stuff and you can't get them once online is gone so having it Physical is pointless. Only way to preserve stuff is using PC platform to get games and get DRM free versions where possible or Steam games since they said they'd give you a way to play without Steam if they ever closed, which isn't really going to happen as PC is a continuous platform that doesn't age and get replaced with new services or generation like consoles do.

If you're referring to "The subscriber agreement makes it clear: you don't own the software (Steam or the games), there are no guarantees and Valve can cancel your license at any time. I don't pay a CENT to use the Steam service or store, not sure if Sony or Microsoft users could say the same. Always on DRM? You can play PS4 games offline. Done so many times when I change my Modem's settings, it's all down to the battery in the end, the battery holds the data, the old battery has the data when your offline, the new battery doesn't so that's why. They just need to change things in a patch so it's not asking for calls to their servers for trophies. Computers do the same thing, they want to access the time for Windows or other sources, nothing new, just that Sony needs to make changes and we will have to wait and see on that. That or just going with emulation in the future and making sure to have a powerful enough computer to play them when parts or pre-builts are reasonable.

Which means, you need an internet connection to play. I don't think xbox has this problem, if I'm not mistaken their CMOS is powered by the power brick. So I don't see why Sony couldn't have fixed this. In fact I'm seeing some people say that the same problem is on PS5 as well

@Ghost Troupe My thoughts exactly. Xbox One literally has the same problems though worse I believe. Last year me and a friend was not able to play Halo: MCC offline until I not only connected to the internet but was also forced to update my console and the game to be able to play it. If I didn't do it the game wouldn't start and sometimes give me an error. The last Xbox console I will ever buy. PS4 being the last Playstation I will ever buy too. Note that last year was a recent example. It has happened many times before where I haven't turned on my Xbox One for months and when I do end up using it to play games they wouldn't open and they would sometimes give me errors when I play offline. Every time I was forced to connect to the internet to update the game or the trash console or both to be able to start the games. I'm staying with Nintendo & PC from now on. Have been since 2017. Sony & Microsoft can both fuck off.

I posted on another youtuber's vid, but feel it's relevant here too (for the PS3 system), so reposting: I removed the CMOS battery tonight in my PS3 Slim and replaced it with a new one. In Short - In my findings: - Every digital game needs to be verified online, or it won't play or revert to the demo version of it. DLC attached to physical game discs also disappears too. - Setting the time/date manually does nothing to restore it. - Reinstalling your games fresh from the hard-drive, with a new installation data, will not restore it. (I don't know about backing up pre-saved digital games/didn't try that). - We must log-in to restore the game licenses or you'll be locked out after reinstalling a new battery. -Also, my digital games worked only after relogging-in. I only synced my Trophies later-on, so that did not affect being able to use my games at all after replacing the battery. The console wanted the time/verification of ownership from the network. I had to log-in to the network to fix the issues of not being able to play the digital games/DLC. The long of it, here is what happened to me: At start-up, the console prompted to reset the time and date, so I did exactly to the hour/minute and current date. I found after, I still could not access my digital games. I checked the information data, and it was blank underneath with the 'buyer icon' displaying this dash line symbol '-'. Any game I download prior, when trying to boot it up, either would state the game has a time limit and needed access to the network or reverted to the demo versions of that game. I tried deleting a ps1 game and reinstalled it with a back-up installation of that same game I kept on my ps3 hard drive (Chrono Trigger) and after reinstallation, I tried again and the same error message of a time limit appeared/you need to log into the network to verify the purchase. Reinstalling a game, does not work. After this, I tried a physical disc game with DLC, to see if it would still be there included in the game. It was Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, as I previously downloaded the two extra chapters in the epilogue ending, and booted it up; wasn't surprised to see that the DLC did not appear in the game. I decided to log into the network and every game then booted up just fine and all my DLC was restored in the digital games and back into the physical game discs data too. *A Reply* So when you replaced the cmos did it boot as normal except ask for time at the start right? And you could play your physical games offline? I presume ur cmos already inside was fine? *My Reply* Yes to all three of those. The new battery worked just like the old one, to my relief. In my Slim unit (I have the PS3 with the manual slider door on top) it had a compartment holder for the battery on the Motherboard. I had to dismantle the entire unit to reach it (and this unit version is not easy to put back together, as all the cables are shorter and more compacted inside, especially all the cables to the laser attaching to the Motherboad below). Don't really recommend an inexperienced person opening up the console, and then begin pulling this open unless they have a general idea on what they're doing, or would have a very difficult time putting this version of the PS3 Slim back together. Here is the number of the replacement battery I found inside the PS3 Slim for it in my unit: CR2032E Lithium 3v. The replacement can just be bought at the store locally.

Planned obsolescence means it breaks short after the warranty is over. For a product with a 1to 2 warranty (depends on the country) 15-20 is pretty good. Its more likely that your ps4 breaks because of something else.

I'm pretty certain this is despite the fact that Sega shut those servers down not because they shut the servers down. I thought you had to use some sort of hack or connect to an unofficial server to get that to work. Mostly they axe official servers because it costs them 2 cents a month to run and in modern capitalism we can't have nice things. I really wish there were more rogue employees that were willing to just dump server source code and game source code in this cases so fans could get the servers back up again.

=P, oh you poor poor thing, my Nintendo Gamecube version is so superior. That said, v1 or 2? The only thing I never liked about the PSO original, was the Resta hack. I lost everything to that, especially after getting a Lavis Cannon legit, that royally pissed me off. Those were good times on the DC, but I still prefer the updates on the GC, and you can also play that on private servers. Cool that it's possible on DC (I didn't even know there WERE such private servers, neato...*looks at DC game list...both v1 and 2). They really need to bring back the original builds of PSO to consoles at some point, make it fully offline as well (especially for certain rares), and unlock those unimplemented equipment, like Rico's Ring.

@Mister Lau they'll still be online for the foreseeable future, so, CMOS battery dies 5-7 years, I replace it, 5-7 (probably closer to 10+ years if I leave my PS4 plugged in all the time) we're talking about PS4 playing offline games until 2030 or longer without PSN. Personally, I'm not worried about it. By then someone will have a PSN spoof if Sony does take them offline. It'll just be a repair. It's also worth mentioning that the PSP has a tough time connecting to modern routers. Who know's what Internet standards will be defacto in 5, 10 or 15 years from now. So the servers might still be up, but maybe the thing can't get online due to simply being old internet tech.

Funny story. I bought a PS3 game but overlooked that it was from a different region so the DLC wouldn't work. Fortunately, it's on PS4 so now I will have two copies. Had the intent to sell the PS3 copy but if this means my PS4 copy is shot, then I better be holding onto my PS3 copy. At this point in time who will want to buy physical anything from Sony? They won't be taking PS4 off the PSN for the trophy sync for some time yet, and by the time they do it will only be a small number of people that worry about it. Why would you want to play PS4 games on an old PS4 console when they run better on the newer PS5?

There is no ownership of games anymore, we are leasing them now so the game maker/ or the console maker can at anytime take the right to play the game away. People need open there eyes before we lose all of our rights of ownership.

@@pimper7000 We are also assuming a lot. Sony just needs to keep a skeleton of the servers just for systems to connect to. And that's if Sony shuts servers down 20 years from now. We'll be onto the PS8. Right now many PS4 games can be played on the PS5. So the issue of playing your games isn't fully there. You'll just have to play on a different console which most will prefer since it'll have better hardware.

@@joefawley9264 Exactly! DRM is not the same as CBOMB. DRM was gonna tether the game to the system and would have you connect to the internet to be able to play it every 24h or so. There was also the issue w/ selling and sharing your physical copies of games you own. As I remember they wanted to lock each physical copy of a game to the system and so if you wanted to sell your game you would have to take it to an official retailer, say GameStop, so that they could deactivate the DRM on that copy and buy it from you. Which would give the retailer the power to buy YOUR games for the price they wanted. MS would probably want their share/cut of that transaction, of course...

I mean, the entirety of Steam and pretty much all digital purchases work that way. More and more, this is how gaming is going. Hopefully we’ll see a firmware update that fixes this in the future.

@@Hhhhhh-sz9ud The difference is that Steam was meant to be digital and Its popularity is a warranty that It will stay God knows how many years more. We probably won't see the day Steam gets cancelled, we will die first. On the other hand I can't believe Sony rely that much on servers when they have PS1/PS2 experience. They had to ask themselves "what happens after X or Y". This really hurts Sony more than we think and they will have to come up with something or It will hurt future PS5 sales.

This is what I was worried about with PS4 physical copies. It’s essentially just installing the game and using the disc to activate the licensing of the game to play it. In which the licensing to play the game is connected to their servers.

People are complaining. But Sony doesn't care. Apparently Sony even have the rights to terminate the ability to play games whenever they feel like. So your PS4 will be a door step in the future. While the PS3 can still play Physical games, the PS4 can do none.

I mean, it‘s kinda the best thing you can go for. Did it with my PS3 and Vita and in all honesty, it‘s the best decision I did. Sure you still need to have precautions, because of online and all that, but we‘re talking about a time where the servers are shut down anyway. So Sony won‘t give a damn anymore.
