Congratulation for this great tutorial. Just a question: I have both the HX90v and HX99, and in general but specially on modes P, M, I can see that the HX90v make nicer photos, but the HX99 looks more flats, how could I get nicer photos on the HX99 ?

YOu need a long shutter speed, at least 1/2 second, as much as 2 seconds. To prevent overexposure, the camera (or manually) compensates by reducing the f-stop and possibly lowering the ISO. If you do not understand the interplay between shutter speed and f-stop, you can probablly find on e of the nighttime scenes that will force a longer exposure. You'll want a tripod.

Question Jason . . . When in the "selfie " config. with the display up; does the hx99 focus when you push the shutter release, or, when it takes the picture 3 seconds later. ? It kinda seems like it's focusing when you push the shutter button; based on the "beep". Which would be too soon; before you extend the camera and crop. Thanks, Bob

Yes it is focusing when it beeps, so you need to have something in place for the camera to focus on if it's just you in the selfie shot for example.

This is regarding full frame & APS-C cameras. Will have significant low light performance on Full frame compared to APS-C without noise? I'm going to buy a new lense for an APS-C sensor. I also have an idea to invest in full frames lenses. But the Full frame body prices are very high. I'm doing this as a hobby. Help me. Thank you.

Low light performance is significantly better on the full frame cameras, but as you mentioned the lenses are significantly more money as well. Best bang for the buck would be the Sigma 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Lenses for low light shooting and overall quality in my opinion. If you need optical stabilization, the the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Is a good option and 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens as well. Some options must be enabled not letting you use it... Face detection for example and [120p]/[100p] cannot be selected for the following settings: [Intelligent Auto][Superior Auto][Scene Selection]

If you are not into video, then the HX80 (bhpho.to/2EBOnNT) would be a better value for the dollar in my opinion ;) It has the same sensor and overall image quality as the HX99

Hello Scott, If you press the DISP on the back of the camera it will cycle thru the various display modes. The Histogram should be one of them. If not turn it on here: MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [DISP Button] → [Monitor] or [Finder] → desired setting → [Enter]

Hi Jay, I know your Sony HX99 review is old now but I've just bought the camera and I'm having a problem getting Auto HDR to work. I'm in JPG, in Program mode and as per the manual Picture Effect is turned off. Bracketing works fine, but I cannot for the life of me get multiple shots using Auto HDR, both with auto exposure and defined exposure settings. Other than just setting the Camera to Auto HDR, is there anything else I need to do, with any other settings. As I say, bracketing works fine. You may not have this camera anymore but it's the same Auto HDR setting for the Sony RX100 series. Any help you can give is appreciated.

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks, no it's functional and not greyed out. I tried both settings in Auto HDR and It only takes one shot. I'm wondering if there is any other setting that could conflict, although being in JPG, Program mode and with Picture Effect turned off as per manual, it should be OK.

Apologies, Jay. Somehow, file format had locked into RAW which explains the non-functioning of Auto HDR. I've been shooting in JPG so somewhere along the line clumsy fingers got involved. Sorry to have troubled you.

I just got one of these thinking it has all the things i want for my budget...i also thought it could do timelapse...i saw you can do it in the HX90v...and just assumed you'd be able to do it in the HX99 too...now i'm wondering if i should return it for the HX90v. Is there anyway to get the timelapse/interval shooting on the HX99?

whoa...i know this video was shot a year ago lol...but my main question is...How the heck do you record a slow mo video? When i tried the setting 1080p at 120fps and review the video, it's still recorded as normal? Helpppppp

Hi Ninja, you need to record at 1080 and 120p like you are doing, but then you also need video editing software like Final Cut Pro to take that 120p footage and spread it out to let's say 24p in a new project. That 120 frames per second footage will then be spread out to 24 frames per second, which is what slows it down so much. So instead of 120p = 1 second of time, it will then be 4-5 seconds of time and slow-motion. That is how you do it... I will create a new video tutorial on this, because you are not the first person to ask how to do this. Stay tuned for that in the very near future!! Unfortunately the video editing software will cost you some money, but if you plan on doing slow motion work, it's well worth the investment in my opinion.

Try the Sports Mode in the SCN Menu. The camera will use a fast shutter speed - but also a high ISO if the light is less than bright/ideal.
