Part 1 of 2 parts: A review featuring primarily the unique image stabilization capabilities of the Sony HXR-NX30 with sample footage showing it's "steadicam-like" characteristics.
For more information on the Sony HXR NX30 go to the Video Whisperer blog (linked above). There is now a category for the NX30 in the drop-down menu on the right which rounds up several blog postings on this camera in one place, including various types of video productions shot with the NX30, and tips on its use.

One thing I noticed in your use of the FCPX stabilization feature is you have a lot of screen wobble from the processing when you're moving across elements in the foreground that are very close. I had the same problem and figured out you need to turn off the 'Scale Smooth' setting in the stabilization menu and that problem will stop with no degradation of the other settings. Give it a try, it makes a big difference in preserving your depth of field stability.

Interesting Alan! Meanwhile I've got the PXW X70 which is '4K ready'. Long zoom and an amazing clear zoom technology that makes digital zoom usable. Funny to see this old post. The X70 review I just did just hit 14,000 views in a tad over 2 months.

+TheVideoWhisperer Sir first of all I comment you with a wonderful to the point and detailed explanation of the HXR-NX30 camera. My question to you is that am owner of Sony HXR-NX3 camera but as support I need second camera and HXR-NX30 seems perfect but in the Netherlands (where I live) I can't buy it anymore. Could u recommend (specially in low light) another camera as good as or better then HXR-NX30 or maybe successor of this camera? Thanks in advance!!

Try this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap6pc6Klac-pgdE I still have my NX30 and use it often. The one in the video (PXW X70) I use for all interview shots (nice shallow depth of field). In this review, I do a direct comparison to the NX30 on its steadiness characteristics. Also, you can make the X70 4K if you want (but you don't have to). It's a great camera.

Image quality smokes the XHA1. Just got back from Paris where we toured some US friends through the city. Used the Sony all day in both still and video modes till 2am. I was completely stunned at the image quality at NIGHT and its ability to focus and auto colour balance in the varying light conditions from sun, sky and artificial sources. All that and it fit snugly in my palm all day carrying it around. Really loving it!

The HXR NX 30 is hard to come by these days. Occasionally you'll find one on ebay or amazon and many have asked me where to get one. However, check out my review on the PXW X70 (which I also own). Slightly more expensive but still small with all the same features (more or less), but a larger sensor, 4K capable (after paying for the upgrade key) and much more controllable on manual functions. Google search it and my review will be right there.

Geekesters, you’re very welcome and thank you for taking the time to let me know. I’ve still got that little guy and use it, but a year or so later got the Sony PXW X70 which is slightly more expensive but better (and still popular and available)-and I did a review on that one. That said, it’s upgrade (the Z90) is even better, but I don’t own one. Cheers, Joe

Funny enough I was exclusively Sony until (on the pocket camera side) I bought a succession of 3 Cibershots, each of which eventually acted up with a weird internal vibration. So I switched to Canon for everything. (still have a Canon 600D). This camera brought me back to Sony and it hasn't let me down yet. Best value for money I've encountered in this market.

TheVideoWhisperer I just pulled the trigger (pun intended) on the NX70 instead - but never would have gone that direction without your superb reviews (I've subbed). A few extra features that made the difference for me were the articulating eyepiece, additional fine-grain controls externally, and the available 240 fps frame rate mode. I love to do slow motion. Thanks again for your awesome videos.

TheVideoWhisperer Well, you've done it my friend. After just about a year exactly with the NX70 - which I love and use heavily - I have ordered the NX30 as its companion. End of year will see the demise of the current rebate offers, and end-of-year pricing seems as good as I've seen, so I bought one. Considered getting a second NX70 for a few hundred more (net rebate), but the way you present the NX30 really makes me feel that the two might compliment one another very well, each having some strength the other does not, but both being superb units. I hope that is how I feel in a month or two. I suspect that it is your modesty that prevents you pointing out that your technical skill as a cameraman, but most importantly - your eye - is to be credited for the beautiful scenes you show us in your work. The camera is merely a tool (in this case a fine one) but it takes a craftsman to bring a tool to life.

First of all, I found this on a forum: "To make it clear: In the NX30 the "standard" mode is the new "Balanced Optical SteadyShot" ("BOSS", as I call it). The NX30' "active" mode is a combination of "BOSS" plus digital steadyshot." I thought it was the other way around, but what this guy says makes more sense. As noted in the video, I did the first shot in standard mode and was impressed with the result. So it's really employing the whole moving lens block mechanism which I had liked to a gryro.

Thank you so much for your review. You sold me. I liked your review so much I went out and bought a used NX30 camera for my videography business in Canada. It also has 90 GB of onboard Solid State Memory as well as a SD slot for cards up to 128GB. You can copy the footage over to the card or keep adding footage to the card if you ever need more memory. A real power house of a camera. The image stabilization is freaky good in active mode, as you said, so much so I forget to switch it off sometimes. Have you tried it on Full Zoom Out...unbelievable!

Hi, Rick, great review pointing at the main advantages of this little camera! I am a seasoned photographer and tried to get into video - for 2 years now. I switched from NIKON D300 + D700 to SONY A65 & NEX7 with all the MINOLTA lens gems. I got exited about NEX VG10, returned it, VG20 returned it, NX 30 may become my choice, using NEX 7/ A65 just where I want to have a more 'cinematic" look, .... helping to reduce my lens arsenal and travelling "light" THANKS for the great, professional review!

I think this may be the most glowing review I've ever seen of a camcorder. It's really great to get a professional's viewpoint on a device. I have struggled with stabilization myself, but then I primarily shoot on DSLRs and I don't have the luxury of stabilized lenses/sensors. This has opened my eyes to something new. I think I am going to look into camcorders now, starting with the NX30, it could make my life a whole lot simpler. I primarily do videos for myself and family, but something like this could give it the extra added something that I've been missing. Thank you so much for the review. I hope you will review more cameras/camcorders in the future. If the camera companies were smart, they'd start sending you demo units so that you can do reviews on them, as it's rare to get a professional cameraman's review on these types of things. I have watched so many video reviews of cameras and I never really know whether the person behind the camera knows what they're doing, so I tend to have to take their review with a grain of salt. Please do more reviews if you have the opportunity, I'd love to hear your opinions. :)

Thanks Scott. I'd love to review more cameras. After all, this is a prosumer camera, though a good one. I just have no idea what it takes to set up such a relationship with Sony or Canon or whoever. If anyone does, please let me know. I do know that this review has sold a lot of cameras for Sony--people tell me so in the comments here, on my blog and on Linkedin. I also notice, compared with comments on other videos of this camera, that the comments here are generally quite relevant and engaging. Not much drivel at all.

TheVideoWhisperer I suspect that you would need to contact their PR department and give them some information on your background and links to any reviews that you've done previously. It would likely be in their best interest to have a professional cameraman who would be willing to do reviews of their cameras, as most people who do these reviews aren't professionals in their field. I would think that would give you a pretty big leg-up over the competition. Best of luck to you.

TheVideoWhisperer Joe, read the blog post, saw the part 2 of the review. I am really sold on the idea that this is our next camera. We are still a small, but growing, channel, and this will take us to the next level. And, it is less expensive than what it cost our Russian counterparts who just went with the Black Magic. Thanks, Paul
@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 10 жыл бұрын
Now I'm intrigued. What are your Russian counterparts doing. The opposite of what you're doing (bashing the US)? At any rate, you've made the better choice because it's smarter, easier to use camera that will make you shine. 4K and shallow depth of field won't trump what you can do easier and quicker with the NX30--including night footage! Good luck!

Could you please, to the best of your knowledge, explain the different stabilization options of the NX30 and what the are optimaly used for? Thanks, that definitely helped, although I'd still like to know when "standard" is preferable over "active". From my understanding it seems that 'fixed shot" is for tele-photo or "long-distance" shots that are fixed on one subject with minimal camera movement, such as a bird perched in a far-away tree . The object is to reduce the camera shake that is magnified over distance. Your thoughts?

Joe, I really like the style as well as the content of your review. You should do more. I can't thank you enough for recommending the NX-30/70 NXcams. I've very happy with the results, and I've just scratched the surface of what this camera can do. Image quality is great, and combined with FCPX, it's a grand slam! You should really do more reviews, and I'd be interested to know your further impressions of these cams.
@martinXY
@martinXY 11 жыл бұрын
Hi William. I use FCPX to edit AVCHD files from my Canon HFS 10 and it's dead simple. You can either import the files from the camera card and edit them as is (although FCP X will re-wrap them with a mov wrapper, but this is not the same as transcoding - your footage is exactly what you shot) or you can elect to "optimise" the media on the way through. FCPX will then bring your original media and also create a ProRes version with no quality loss.

Not sure where your comment went!! But in reply to using ND filters for bright exteriors on your NX70 in manual mode, yep, that's how to do it. You should be able to turn on zebra in the NX70 to help with that as it could be tough to judge it using the viewfinder in bright sun. But also, try putting the auto exposure to the test one day when you're bored and see what it can do. I too never used to use it, but now I find it a godsend for the most part.

Gwendolen, I was self taught with help as needed from forums and Google on FCP7, so I'm not really the best for advice. If you're just starting out however, my advice would be to do the 30 day free trial of FCPX and not start with FCP7. Then I can help. Ignore all the complaining about it you may have heard about FCPX. It's a lot more fun and a lot faster than the classic NLE systems and doesn't really take very long to get the hang of it. In fact, in a way, it's revolutionary as your new camera

Great review! I have the PJ710 and one thing I wish it had was the ability to knock down the contrast and saturation. I could not find it in the NX30 manual, but do you know if the contrast can be adjusted to get a "flat" (reduced contrast) picture for color grading?
@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 11 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick, good tip. Of course that footage is unedited and I would rarely use something of great length. During shooting when there's a big bobble, like when I tripped, of course both the camera and editing stabilization are going to go nuts trying to fix it, and some of that edge wobble or jello effect is a result. For my usage, I'd snip out the best portions and then further stabilize only those--and then not have it on long enough to be "studied"--if I need it totally smooth anyway.

Good video Joe, very interesting little camera... I'm currently using a Sony AX2000 which I love, but the stabilization is not great on it and I've found FCPX just tears the picture apart trying to stabilize walking shots. Will do. Would you say this camera is good for film making and giving my video a cinema style look? 24 fps? My friend is trying to convince me to go the DSLR route, because this camera is a fixed lense, and DSLR's are interchangeable. Would you agree?
@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 10 жыл бұрын
Adrian Goloksy As you seem to be just starting out, I would caution that the "DSLR route" is a fad. That shallow depth of field makes everyone think that buy using a DLSR they'll automatically make videos that are "cinematic". But making great films is a lot more than that. There's more than 100 years of combined experience and the development of conventions that work that make up that subject and bypassing all that knowledge to think that by mimicry with a camera you can achieve it would be folly. DSLRs capable of HD video (including all the lenses and accessories) are not cheap. And they are not primarily made for producing video, so they have drawbacks and are difficult to use. These days they are making real video cameras with large full-frame sensors that do the same job (in terms of that "filmic look") mainly because of the popularity of DSLRs and because of the drawbacks (no professional sound input or control, limited running time due to overheating electronics, limited electronic control, difficult to "follow focus"). It isn't the camera that makes a good film. It's the cameraman and director. When I was taught the basics of photography I was issued a "Kodak Instamatic" camera--the old type of cheap point-and-shoot that used film cassettes. I wasn't allowed to use anything else. The point? I was told "You can take a great picture with any camera if you know your basics of composition, lighting, etc., and this cheap little plastic camera will prove that. Once you master than, then you can consider applying what you've learned to a more advanced camera." I also think (just my opinion) that this "24fps" thing is another misplaced confidence in producing a "filmic" look just because cinema cameras have used that frame rate for ages. Because of that relatively low speed there's blur built into each frame that has motion in it. Supposedly that approximates the human eye. But these days the sharp clarity obtained from frame to frame shot at higher speeds seems to better approximate how people see real life. 4K is coming out now. The silliest thing in the world would be to shoot 4K footage at 24fps. Even all those videos you see shot with the famous GoPro sports cameras are shot at higher frame rates (usually 48fps for the US, or 50fps EU), otherwise that clarity gets lost. So there you go. That's my off-the-cuff opinion!
@RaymondHng

Adrian Goloksy If you are doing primarily video work, get a video camera, not a still camera with added video recording features. Still cameras do not include all the vital functions that you take for granted on a video camera. Here's one example. We were shooting a red carpet event with a DSLR. Because the DSLR did not have any audio output capabilities and no audio meters on the screen, we had to shoot without the aid of listening with headphones. This was a fast paced environment, so we had to work quickly without any double checking. At the end of the shoot, we discovered to our horror that the microphone was not plugged in the all way in the DSLR camera. When we played back the footage, we had all the video of the celebrities talking on camera, but there was no audio recorded at all. In other words, our work on the red carpet that day was wasted. If we were to have the ability to listen to the audio being recorded with headphones or were to learn that there was a firmware update for the DSLR that added audio meters to the screen, this disaster would have have happened. Learn from our mistakes.

I'm intrigued by the wide angle lens conversion. Which did you get for how much? And how does it do with overall sharpness? I got disillusioned with them with the last one I got for a Canon XHA1 which was horrible, even though a couple hundred bucks. Looks like the good one would have cost more like $600 which wasn't worth it to me.

Thanks Joe for your response. I've been looking at the tow cameras (HXR-NX30U and the HDR-PJ790 and other than the Mic on the HXR-NX30 I was unsure what the difference was. On the NX30U, are you able to attach the optional wifi adapter that allows you to upload to your computer or the internet? And the audio block on top, is that a mono or stero microphone? Thanks. Derek
@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 11 жыл бұрын
Not sure about wifi adapters, but I kinda doubt it (on the NX30). When you move out of the consumer range I think the expectation is that you will be editing your material, not just directly uploading off the camera. I know some consumer cameras offer this and you'd just have to google and check on the PJ790. Yes, it's stereo on the audio block (two different channels which can be independently set for two mics.)
@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 11 жыл бұрын
I don't have one to review, HOWEVER, that looks like the EXACT same camera minus the audio block. That mean's it will have the usual built-in consumer quality microphone and possible a mini-jack input. The "audio block" for the NX30 provides two professional XLR inputs and controls for microphones or line cables from mix boards. I think you'll find it otherwise identical--so depends on your audio requirements.

(continued from last comment). In the "active" mode it is additionally applying image processing to the results of the "standard mode". As far as "fixed shot" mode goes, I haven't figured it out quite. Seems others haven't either. But as it advises application for a tripod or locked off shot, it may be for use on, say, a car mount on a camera or on or boat or similar. Just guessing there!

Sorry, one other note is the lack of isolation of the mic. If you attempt to adjust the levels while recording, the mic will pick up the sounds of you adjusting and closing the clear control door. As profound, your hand adjusting your grasp is easily picked up on your audio. If you are careful, this is reduced greatly, but still evident. The shoe can be used for a aftermarket mic with better isolation or resort to a hard wired or wireless mic that can be connected to the XLRs or mini jack inputs

Got a focus question for you... Using an older Sony Handycam miniDV camera, I would record training sessions for foster parents, and would zoom in all the way onto the chair in which the trainer would sit, go from autofocus to manual, and would then be able to zoom out and everything from fully zoomed out or in would be in focus. I tried to do this with my HXR-NX30U, and it is not the same. I can set the focus as listed above, but when I try to zoom out all the way, the image goes out of focus. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!

There's something wrong with you lens if that happens. (I just tested that procedure on mine and it works fine). Meanwhile, just focus it at the focal length you are shooting at as best you can and it will be ok.

However, it appears by description, that the XA20 and 25 have a similar image stabilization feature to this Sony that I tested. In that case, go with the Canons. They're a little more expensive, but have twin card slots and a longer optical zoom range, can shoot in dual formats (ACHV and MP4) Also, the XA25 allows wi-fi upload. Truly amazing at what's coming out these days in the price range of these cameras!

Ok, I bought it a little over a week ago, based on your opinion and that of a couple others. I was compelled by the gyro-stabilized Zeiss lens and the compact size ( the projector is cool as well ). I was using a D7000 w/ a 10-20 lens, external shotgun mic, LED light, 7" monitor and a Tascam DR-60D on a Cam Caddie rig ( over 7lbs ) and big. The NX30 is 2lbs and tiny. I bought the wide angle lens conversion - which equals 19mm. I wanted wider than that and you can't use the lens hood with it.

I use my nx30 to record very loud live music at a club. The supplied EXM-XM1 is not ideal, being a shotgun. It also doesn't seem to handle the high volume very well, distorting a little on the high end even with the levels set correctly and the internal pad on. My Rode stereo video mic sounds better for music and can handle the high volume just fine, but sometimes I'm forced to place the camera next to a neon sign so I get some hum. Can you recommend a few XLR mics that fit my needs?

Mark Medina Firewire for the audio doesn't sound right to me. I've done it once or twice off the internal drive just as you did and got all information. HOWEVER, if I were you I'd get some SD cards and use them. You can always go to the internal as a BACK UP, but it's just to fiddly with the cable and too prone to disaster (if you unplug the cable at the wrong time while transferring). 32GB Class 10 cards are pretty cheap. Get a couple. Get Sandisc (think I spelled that wrong) and get one of their top rated ones. Your depth of field with still photos will be the same as for video footage--given the same settings.

I think the Tiffen Circular polarizer uses the same idea. It IS cleaver. The Polaroid gives you a huge range, going far beyond 0.9 ND. But, if the sunlight isn't that intense or if the sun goes behind clouds you have to get the Polaroid off, because the lowest filter level still causes you to lose 3 or 4 settings on the bottom. Still, this is a lot better than being stuck with one fix filter. We've got lots of sun in Texas, so you could shoot all day with the polaroid on many days.

@TheVideoWhisperer
@TheVideoWhisperer 10 жыл бұрын
Derek, it's a miracle! When you plug in an external mic it should automatically switch off your internal mic. You've managed the impossible! (just kidding). I have to assume that you're new Sony lav does not plug into the XLR connectors (which would automatically turn off your internal mic), but must be plugging into that mini jack at the right rear of the camera. I've never used that. I assume that that input is ACG (automatic gain control) which you really don't want. (it will automatically set the level for anything coming in --eg. voice-- but when you go quiet or pause, it will increase the level and so bring up the background noise until you start speaking again). What you really want is a mic that plugs into the audio block. There you can manually set the correct level. In the meantime, check if your lav and the internal mic are recording on two different channels (hopefully), in which case, in your editing program you should be able to turn off (mute) the internal mic. You using FCPX? If so, I can tell you how to determine if you're getting two tracks and how to separate them and so turn the offending one off.

Kevin, off-hand--not having tested the XA20 or XA25 (which, at this writing, are due out next month in the UK I believe), I wouldn't worry about image quality differences. The Canon's are bound to be outstanding, but in this price range I doubt there's much of a perceivable difference in the end product, which I presume will be web-based. If you're into super-duper image quality go for larger image sensors or 2K and 4K cameras. But here your price range starts jumping way up.... (continued)

Not exactly a new version of the NX30, but the Sony PXW X70 comes close. No, but as far as I know, it's virtually identical except that it's "weatherproof/dustproof". I'm not sure if it has the same gyro lens (I've heard it both ways--it does, it doesn't, but never checked it out so you'd have to verify that). Otherwise I think it's the same camera in terms electronics and it would be a better choice for anyone shooting in dusty environments, deserts, etc. as I fear the NX30s gyro lens arrangement might not take too kindly to dust interference.

I like to shoot in manual at 60 fps--as much as possible. I find the NX-70,good as it is in low light, to over expose in bright sun. Rather than change to auto, or increase fps, can I use 37mm ND filters in bright outisde like conditions & control the image by iris? I hate shooting in auto for the obvious reasons. Sean, No I didn't compare the two except by reading other reviews, watching videos, etc. While I preferred Canon's SD card arrangement (two SD card slots plus internal memory and configurable in different ways--to Sony's single slot and 96 gb internal) the Sony has a larger image sensor (thus wider angle lens and likely more sensitive in low light--both of which are crucial in corporate video shooting). Google: "Sony NX30 currently best in its class, Allan Tépper" for technical comparison.

it is a Sony VCL-HGA07B - not nearly a wide as my DSLR 10-20, but acceptable, But if the camera's menu is set to the wide lens, the gyro is disabled. I will do tests between the 2 settings. My last video, I figured this out and changed at the very end.If the camera is not set to 'wide angle', it does not compensate for the conversion lens. Sony states that you should go manual focus. Lens $125.00, camera $1785.00 USD.

After the NX30 I bought the PXW X70 which I use and love. It too is now an older camera but has quite a following. (I did a review for it which you'll find easily). It's a bit more expensive (not much) but with more pro features and easier to use since it's slightly bigger. However, it was updated with the Z90, also a good choice. That said, Sony has just announced (pro.sony/en_GB/products/handheld-camcorders/hxr-mc88?fbclid=IwAR2-fVxxYYdOunN2KTFvAF25qwIia0YGUcELGa9BaHKnuEtFNLlxwoFDwXQ) which may be just what you're looking for as an upgrade to the NX30.

It would seem that "standard" is a purely optical action with some sort of gyro stabilization of the lens and image block. If "active" then adds image processing to the mix, that means you'll probably get a small crop and probably also a slight degradation of image quality. They're all compromises on image quality, so if you want the best you pay big bucks for a proper steadicam and everything that goes along with that--it's a skill in itself that has to be learned and practiced.

...and sync up the sound later. Either use it's own mics or take sound off the board into its mini-jack input. I have an excellent cardiod condenser mic (Audio Technica 8031) which is excellent on directional sound and typically used as a "reporter" mic in noisy environments. Better than the Rode, less expensive than a Sennheiser or Bayer. Might work for you if you set it up on a stand pointed at a set of speakers and cabled into the camera. I use it mainly for interviews in noisy environments.

Recording live music from the camera position, no matter the mic, is not ideal as you're basically getting PA (public address) off the speakers along with all the local ambience. I would think the club would have a basic mix board--or perhaps the band does. Ideally you'd take a feed out of the mix board of the live mix before it hits the speakers. You could try the H2 zoom recorder, a popular and inexpensive digital audio recorder which could independently record the audio onto it's SD card...

If you used a glide cam, you'd turn off any stabilisation features of the camera you're using. As for it being worth it or not, that depends if you want to spend the money, carry around extra kit and take the time to set it up shot by shot. I've used Glidecam (I assume you mean the stabiliser rig that you wear, not a gliderail) and Steadicam for cine cameras as well as the smaller ones for video cameras. Personally I'd rather not use them in a small business application as they're finicky and not as easy to use as you think unless you're well practiced and use it a lot. Steadicam is better than Glidecam by the way. I think their best for team productions, real movies, etc.

My point... what are you using now? of am I missing somthing? Thank you... I'll make a video of my dachshund soon... Thanks

Hi! That was very neat first video camera review! I wonder if you can tell me if you can do a nice shallow depth of field with HXR-NX30! Thank you very much!

nope! Better with the PXW X70 (which I also reviewed and which I also own). But, if you really want shallow depth of field, you're into a different price range for a video camera (with interchangeable lenses) or a DSLR type camera (and all it's lenses). If you're doing film shorts, that would be the way to go. If you're doing corporate videos, forget it. No one cares about shallow depth of field. They only care about selling stuff (and shallow DOF is quite honestly irrelevant...more of a film maker's ego than a corporate man's interest in just getting the marketing message across)
