Just wanted to drop a quick comment on sound quality! The Sony H7/H9 actually sound really nice, as outlined in the video (even without EQ tuning they still sound pretty good). While I'm not a fan of the mics, I think overall a lot of people will be pleased with the sound, with the best value being the Sony H7.

Really nice in dept video! Woaw it really was extensive! I still think there is some room for improvements though. It is not clear to me which headset is the best buy per particular platform. You nicely explain the sound quality of these headsets, however the sound quality of these headsets will be impacted by the platform you’re playing on! For example, we all know the steelseries nova pro’s are the best out there. But I also know the best features that make the sound really stand out are only useable for PC. If I want to hear my enemy’s in Warzone on the PS5, should I go for the H9 or the Nova’s? Is the Nova still decent enough on PS5, are there any tricks to get more out of the Nova’s or any updates we could expect? Or are the wired Nova’s the better option for PS5, because a lot of 3rd party headset company’s offer better sound quality with wired version then their wireless equivalent’s. I miss a chapter which explains per platform through some overview what the headset will be capable off and what features it is limited while using on that particular platform. Or maybe another video with the best headsets per platform for a specific type of user. For us daily consumers it’s hard to see through all these hidden obstacles that these headset company’s don’t tell you about. But maybe you, as one of the best headset reviewers out there, could tell us just about it! :)

I really like your videos and it's better for me to listen and watch something that is longer, social media it's ruining attention spam so I'm trying to stay focus on something, try to learn, really pay attention, so I hope you keep doing reviews in this format ! Great review as always! I’ve owned these since they came out and I’ve really liked them for sound and comfort. Unfortunately, I do have to report the leatherette on the headband has started pulling away exposing the foam underneath, so not great build quality. This happened after about 6 months and I’m very careful with them. I’ve read it’s been an issue for others as well.

I have the Sony H7 and, despite a few minor flaws, I am very satisfied with it. However, I will now buy the H9 for 2 reasons; 1) ANC and 2) The ear cushions. On the H7, the ear cushions are made of fabric or whatever you want to call it and that is certainly not bad, but when I sweat on the ears, it sticks to the fabric, not pleasant. That's why I hope that the H9 which has different ear cushions will be the better one. I can tell you that the H7 and of course the H9 feel very nice and light on the head. The microphone is very good here with skype. If I raise the microphone, my buddy can't hear me anymore ;), I like that very much, suppose you have to say something to your partner that is private, just raise the microphone and put it on the other side. you no longer hear. The only downside is the headband that comes loose quite quickly, I have to stick it on with polish ;). But no worries. It doesn't bother you. Another thing that can happen is that I am listening to KZbin and I fast forward, etc., and the sound is too slow or has disappeared, then you simply have to refresh the KZbin. I don't know how this happens. But nothing bad, just refresh and that's it, it doesn't always happen. I am also pleased with the sound of the games, I hear the footsteps in back4blood, I have set everything to my own liking. I will leave it open as to whether this is the best gaming headphone, but it is certainly one of the better ones that sits comfortably on your head, good microphone, decent battery life and the sound when gaming, if you can adjust it to your own wishes, is very good. well, no complaints about that. I game on pc.

I got the H9 and the Novas here. I agree with you, however, the Sonys are comfortable and the ANC has no hiss. And tbh, the Novas are actually not really wireless with the Dac. I love this channel though!

Great review. I have the sony H9, astro a40 TR with mixamp and pulse 3d. The sony H9 are a big upgrade over the pulse 3d. The H9 are my go to for single player games on PS5 and I use the astro a40 for my MP shooter games like BF2042, destiny 2, and Call of duty. I had the audeze penrose which sounded good but they had horrible range and connection issues. I do wish I could EQ the H9 on the PS5 hopefully in a firmware update in the future. Again this was a great review and I will subscribe to your channel.

No worries! I use two Audio-Technica AT897 mics. Lately they've been connected directly to my FX3 camera's audio mixer, but I also have a Tascam field recorder which sounds better (just more time involved). I then apply some custom parametric EQ tuning in Adobe to better match them to the tone of my voice.

I bought the H9 discounted. After watching this review. Using on the PS5, it sounds very good. But could use a EQ settings like my previous Headphones (Pulse 3D). And in comparison with the Pulse 3D, it is a nice step up in quality. I have tested it with FF16, AC6, GT7 and MW2. Update: I did a mod to reduce the treble reflections. Sounds amazing. I just put a thin tissue between the ear pads and the drivers. Also, H5 announced… you were on point on that.

Thanks Jason! They will certainly work fine, but won’t reach the same volume as either of those headphones. They have a higher impedance and lower sensitivity so you will lose some volume. PS5 controllers can get pretty loud though so it could still be fine, but that’s more down to personal preference at that point.

@GadgetryTech Are the drivers and the mic in the H5, H7 and H9 the same? I think on Sonys website they stated that the H7 has a bidirectional mic and the H7/H9 a unidirectional. I thought that the bidirectional must be better, especially for filtering back noise but the H5 is horrible in this regard. Its is filtering nothing at all on the PS5. Same question for the drivers? Are they the same and only the extras like Bluetooth, ANC and so on differ?

Great vid. My TB stealth 700 gen 2 just had it's transmitter crap out. They don't make replacements (which is infuriating) so I'm in the market for something new/different that has all the nice features I was used to with the 700s.

Awesome review GadgetryTech! I’ve had every wireless headset under the sun so for me the H9 is the best. I use it with the Sonar software and tweak the eq through that. Also tweak the mic through the Sonar and it sounds excellent. The comfort of the H9 is absolutely unmatched and battery life is solid. I had the Nova pro wireless but was just to uncomfortable for me ( little bump in ear cup) and I usually love Steel Series headset, loved the Arctis pro wireless! Hey Joe, I also have to add that the Razer Barracuda Pros are very underrated in my opinion. I revisited them recently and the sound straight out of the box is on point just like you said!They may have the best sound stage of all 3 headsets you talked about. Also super comfortable with little to no ear sweat. The mic is questionable but can be made better with the sonar software. I’m not a Razer fan boy at all but those are some sweet cans!!

Yeah the Razer sound tuning is the best of the three with exception of the darn mic. If it had a killer mic AND simultaneous BT, it would likely be the best value premium wireless gaming headset.

@@5_i_v_e I bought the Razer Barracuda (model inbetween Pro and X) and found it incredibly uncomfortable. The earpads are far too shallow, and the driver only has a very small angle to it. Barracuda looks great - but I find it hard to imagine it would be good for anything requiring slightly deeper earpads.

I picked up the Arctis Nova Pro wireless for my PS5, and after having numerous bugs, audio glitches, and mic issues, I had to return BOTH of the units I bought. They just don't work well with PS5, namely the mic issue. I decided to go with the H9 and I love that everything just works. I wish the EQ settings worked for PS5, but I have a feeling Sony will have a software update for PS5 that will enable it. But stock it sounds really good. I think those looking for COD footsteps, you'll want the customization of the Arctis Pro wireless. I'll sacrifice a bit of features in order to have something work consistently on PS5. The Steelseries headsets tend to have more audio bugs, so I'm pretty happy with these so far. The sound profile is pretty decent for the H9, and there's no popping or crackling in the deep bass like with the Arctis headsets. I can only speak on my experience with the 7P, Pro Wireless, and the Nova Pro wireless. If the Nova had no bugs or mic issues, it would be my favorite (though many complain about the earcups and comfort).

@@AnthonyPetrone they are more low-ended in sound profile, which makes positioning more difficult without tuning the headset to sound bad. This is a COD developer decision, and not necessarily an issue with headsets. I think they just sound different than MW1

Overall I like Astro and SteelSeries more. If the 700 G2 Max had a slightly lower clamp it would be towards the very top as well. I still use he H9 from time to time now, but not when I need critical listening or the best possible performance in CoD Warzone lol.

I think if Sony can release an update for PS5 that can allow us to change the equalizer sound from PS5 sound settings for this H7 headset, that would be much more convenient instead of going back to PC and reupload the equalizer you want to choose. Basically similar to Pulse 3D headset way to switch equalizer through PS5 sound settings. By the way I just want to reconfirm if a flat equalizer is meant for action adventure, RPG sort of games and bass boost is meant for first person shooter games. is that right?

I'd like to see how well you could tune the H3s sub bass is you plugged it in via 3.5 to a Soundblaster Audigy FX v1 soundcard or something else creative labs makes that has good bass tuning controls. That sound card can bring out sub bass like crazy.

In pure sound quality, what's your go to wireless? Really looking into the portal for a go to in everything. But I tried the B&O H9 and it sounded horrible.

They all have some issues, but in terms of frequency response, the Nova Pro, Razer Barracuda Pro, and Audeze Penrose are the best. The Nova Pro has better imaging and less distortion than the Penrose, so it's easier to find footsteps. It's slight, but it is better. If you're okay with having a sub-tier mic, the Barracuda Pro sounded pretty insane out of the box with almost no EQ tuning needed. The Stealth 700 Gen 2 is surprisingly good for imaging as well, and the sound quality is pretty good (especially if you like extra bass).

Soundboard tech is boring to listen to without hands-on training, or sound examples showing levels being tweaked and for this much detail should be for the audiophiles on a seperate video IMO. I've had the H3 and today the H7 and both have cracked when gaming? Sometimes little but sometimes very very much. Is this the laptop? Or is it the Sony headsets? I am nevertheless very satisfied with it, but if the creaking is due to the headset, it will be returned. UPDATE 1 Oktober 2023; It was my old laptop that give the problems, i have new pc and no problems at all now. I gonna buy the H9 now for the ANC and better earcushions.

Could u be confusing AAC with ALAC? i know the former is generic to most while ALAC is apple’s.

ALAC is apples lossless codec. AAC is actually slightly worse than SBC, but AAC works better and sounds better on Apple devices. Most bt gaming headsets are SBC only, and iPhone users end up getting worse sound quality because of it. Having AAC and SBC on one gaming headset is a plus and everyone benefits from it!

The H3's will be reliant on source while the 7s and 9s are reliant on their internal DAC/AMP. You already stated there was a sound difference between the included USB DAC/AMP and direct plug. However it also depends on the source for the direct plugging. For example if you plug it to the laptop you pretty much aren't going to get that great of a quality over that USB DAC/AMP. Noticable but not great. On the flip side if you were to plug it into say a high-end DAC/AMP like my FiiO K9 PRO ESS it would be even better than your laptop.... If you did in fact use that laptop. More than likely your lack of bass is both part included usb dac/amp and shit laptop. In a sense the h3's, not on purpose, were singled out quality wise due to "source". I wonder how they perform connected to a proper high quality source. I bet even a cheap FiiO K3 dac/amp ($109) would let them shine further than your laptop could.

The H7 is the same or better than the Pulse in every way. The Barracuda X is going to have a slightly deeper bass profile and overall better treble tuning (slightly more detail but still not harsh sounding at all). They have similar mid range performance.

I think for overall features and sound quality (once tuned a bit) I like the overall package of the new Nova Pro lineup. For value vs features in wireless, the Stealth 700 G2 Max. Best wired goes to VZR, H6 Pro closed, and Drop PC38X.

Guys don't buy this headset for PS5 it sounds tiny and there is no bass at all. I have H7, it is so sharp that it can hurt your brain, the worst thing is that PS5 does not have graphic EQ to adjust that, it may be good for competitive shooters but for everything else it sucks, you cannot use a DAC with it because there is no 3.5mm jack. For PC its good because there is a software to adjust it.

@@nihilisticpoet my favorite is still the ps4 platinum headset tuned to FPS via ps4 companion app, 50MM drives , bought the h7s , can't tune them, cant turn off ambient sound (hear yourself in the mic) tried 3d audio on and off, still didnt know where my enemies were (playing apex) had to returned them, if you play competitive, i wouldn't recommend that headset (till they maybe release tuning for ps5)

i am still in disbelief that even on ps5 u have no eq or anc indicator. each sound the headsets "ui" makes is like hearing a cow getting fisted. why not use the same voice prompts from their xm lineup?
