So happy to see you review this camera. It was my first digital camera. I remember paying over US$900 for it plus an extra memory stick. I was just starting my career then and so it was an astronomical amount for me. Nonetheless, no regrets. I had just had my first child and wanted to preserve the memories. In the following years, I had 2 more kids and I took many great pictures of my family with this little box. The pictures were so good that they convinced me to buy a Sony digital camcorder, a DSC-R1, and an A7. These days, I am blessed and have other cameras, some of which are quite high-end. However, I still look at pictures taken with the S70 all the time and marvel at them (and at my kids). The colors are rich with a bit of sweetness. The tone and contrast are just perfect.. Though I have sold some of my cameras in years past, I still hang on to the S70. It holds a lot of sentimental as well as nostalgic value for me. S70, along with R1, are in my permanent collection!

I own fewer cameras than you might think! Most of my new reviews are loaners from the companies, as I normally test them before they're even released in the shops. So they're typically sent to me for two weeks, then returned afterwards. I do have a few of my own though for reference or comparison or for filming, like my Sony A6400 which I use to film all my videos. Plus a few standard lenses for testing. And a few vintage ones for this channel, but I've already filmed them all, so I'm either buying second hand vintage models or borrowing them for my retro reviews here.

There's something about the per pixel image quality of the CCD sensors in these cameras. I had a 7.1 MP Canon Elph that seemed to take better pictures than a hacked Elph 300 HS with a 12.1 MP BSI sensor. My early 4 MP Sony and 5 MP Canons still hold up well even though I've moved on to the point that even my Sony a6000 just collects dust since going full in on Lumix M43 a few years ago.

My first digital camera was/is an S75. I still have it - and, I still use it. Not often, but a couple times a year I will get it out, recharge my ORIGINAL battery and use it to take pictures around the house until the battery runs low. After the battery is low it will go back and rest until the next outing. Although it is really slow and demands a lot of patience, the picture quality is still pretty good. Because of its size, it can even go into a pocket for an occasional outing around town. To the best of my knowledge, the S75 is essentially the same specwise as the S70 but in an improved physical format/layout, having the same appearance as the s85, with different coloring on the body. Enjoyed this video. Found it to ring true with my s75.

“Pack of Butter” LOL !! That reminds me of the ‘Candy Bar’ phones. Back in the 70’s a pro-press photographer told me that there was only 3 different lens makers and they made the all the glass for all the different brands. I’m not sure how true that is. That might account for the similarity of the different cameras with similar looking lens. We all had the date and time on our earlier images… proved useful in my case though when it came to proving to the local planning officer that my house extension had been built correctly because the photos I had taken on an early Kodak digital camera had the date stamp in the frame! Once again you prove for most peoples everyday use even today that that level of MP is more than enough! Thanks to you, I jumped on getting a 2000s era digital camera. Just a few weeks ago, I got the bigger brother of that camera, the Sony Cybershot F-828. BTW, I managed to have a Type I Wi-Fi CF card adapter with a 2GB SD in it. It works! I don't have a Memory Stick for it but that Type I CF slot was all I needed. I'm blown away by the details the camera managed to crank out after almost 20 years after it was made.

Nice one, I LOVED that camera and will definitely review the F series models when I manage to get hold of them! How much did you pay?
@jaymikevillanueva12123 жыл бұрын
@@DinoBytes About $80 bucks from Amazon. To be honest, that's literally the cheapest price I've ever paid for a camera in my entire life. It then adds up when I had to spend on getting a spare battery ($10) and that Type I CF Wi-Fi adapter ($16.80). Thank goodness I've got spare 2 gig microSDs and they both worked fantastically with the camera! I also purchased a Type I CF adapter to use full-sized SD cards ($12 bucks) and have tested using an old 16 gig Toshiba FlashAir Wi-Fi SD. Surprisingly the Wi-Fi SD card worked and I was able to transfer still images to my phone without a problem. I really love the camera! It's surprisingly a lot lighter than a DSLR and my neck (and back) really appreciate the swivel design. Shots from it were quite good and surprised me on how much detail it can get under favorable conditions (and with a little touch ups with the Snapseed app). I'm still learning how to use that F828. It's got a bit of a learning curve given the smattering of buttons and options. I've never seen a camera with so many buttons like that since my dad handed me a Nikon D200. I'm looking forward to your retro review on the F series. I think Sony over-engineered the F828 and the fact it's still making pics that ain't out of place for IG is a testament to that. I wonder if it's predecessors have the same quality. Heck, I think Sony should revive this design because it's really good!

The very last new camera he ever bought was the Olympus E-5 in 2010 or 2011. To this day, he still does local event photography with all his old Olympus stuff (he's got two E-5's and three E-30's that he uses as primaries and backups). It not unlikely that the manufacturer that made the similar lenses of the compact cameras by Sony, Canon and Epson was Cosina. Cosina is relatively unknown to the common amateur photographers but has a very long history of creating lenses and camera chassis for other well known manufacturers at a reduced cost. For example in the past the Olympus OM2000 of 1997 (the last of OM mount camera) was made by Cosina, the Canon T60 of 1990 (last FD mount camera) was made by Cosina, the Nikon FM10 of 1995 was made by Cosina too, nowadays Voightländer lenses are made by Cosina. Until 2017 the Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm F2.8, 18mm F3.5, 25mm F2, 28mm F2, and 35 F1.4, as well as the Zeiss APO‑Sonnar T* 135mm F2 for SLR cameras were made by Cosina (Check the dpreview article with the title: Cosina has discontinued the Zeiss SLR Classic series of lenses). My first digital camera was the Kodak DX7440 and I remember taking lots of pictures with it. It was probably why I became more interested in photography. I was used using only film p&s cameras for family travels but when my family got this Kodak, it was so cool to take more than 36 frames and being able to get them onto the computer or even display them on the TV using the A/V out. I remember buying a 128mb SD card (which I still have!!) for it to record images in higher quality and that memory card was around $80 at the time haha. Good times, but lots of good memories. I ended up getting rid of it not long ago because it wasn't working right. It would power on, you could take a few shots and it would save them but the camera would power off despite new battery for it - It also stopped recording the exif data and no matter what the camera date was set to, it always said 2004 haha. hi! I bought this same camera on second hand recently, and it didn’t really come with anything. Your video was very helpful, but do you know what type of charger I should use, and what stick card reader would you recommend for such an old camera? Thank you!
@DinoBytes Жыл бұрын
It uses an AC-L10A adapter and charges the battery inside the camera ALTHOUGH if you have the original battery you will almost certainly need to replace it. If you have the data cable for the camera, you can connect it to USB on your computer, otherwise just buy a memory card reader than can take full size memory sticks, or buy another Sony camera which takes the same sticks but has a more common plug on it like the P1.

Gordon, do you have any of the high-end DiMAGE series? Someone gave me a broken DiMAGE 7Hi years and years ago, turns out it was Sony's faulty sensors that killed it. I'd love to hear some impressions on how it was to use if it actually worked! I was so enamored by the EVF on that body, when I finally went with interchangeable lenses I skipped right over DSLRs went mirrorless! First camera, and I think I've mentioned it before, was part of that highly successful P series, the DSC-P92. Would love to hear thoughts on that one as well, if you have one in your collection.

My first point and shoot digital camera was the Canon G5. First DSLR was Nikon D70 (which I suspect should be many people's first DSLR too) If you can do a video on the D70, will be so heart warming for troubled times now.
@DinoBytes3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the D70 was very popular. I remember reviewing it for some magazines before I started making videos here. BUT I did film a video review of the D90 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpm1hax7bauYhrs) as well as including the D80 in a group test (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKmcpXymdsmShK8) - these are very old though, so please forgive the quality and my own presentation!

How can I read the data off those purple cards?😭 I’ve been struggling so much. I feel as though I just wasted all this money on stuff I can’t return now👎 Damn sony with their proprietary stuff, that should have been my dealbreaker. I knew that before buying it as well. Regret is the worst of emotions hands down.
@DinoBytes Жыл бұрын
Didn't I talk about how I read the cards in this video? You can use the camera as a card reader, using the USB cable for it. Annoyingly the S70 cable is also proprietary, so since I've lost mine, I use a slightly newer Sony camera with a standard USB port as a card reader. Or you could buy a memory stick card reader on eBay or Amazon, but make sure it'll read the larger original cards as the newer MS Pro cards were smaller. Good luck and always read / watch reviews before buying gear!

Hi, i was wondering if it’s possible to mount a lens on this, and if so, which would you recommend?
@DinoBytes2 жыл бұрын
Well, it has a built-in lens with a 3x zoom, so you don't need to mount anything else on it. BUT it might be possible to mount a converter lens on it to make the image wider or more magnified. I've not tried this though.

May as well just go back to the 1970's and shoot large format film, then use a modern scanner to scan ALL the detail off the negative. That will beat current DSLRs.
@DinoBytes3 жыл бұрын
I used to do that, but with 6x7cm film. Cost a fortune in film, development and scanning.
@revokdaryl13 жыл бұрын
@@DinoBytes Yes, I've heard it's quite costly. There IS digital large format now, but the cameras are the price of a house. I've never shot medium or large format on film, just 35mm. Speaking of which, I have some expired slide film I need to use up.

very interesting video, you haven’t changed much since then, this Sony is very similar in specs to my first camera, the Casio QV-3500EX, the sensor is probably exactly the same and the lens has the same focal range although on the Casio it was canon branded….

hi all! not sure if this comment section is still active, but i’ve a chance to buy this camera at a pretty decent price point. would you say it’s a worthy purchase today for casual use?
@DinoBytes Жыл бұрын
I always reply to all the comments! Yes, it's a fun camera to use today, but I wouldn't personally spend more than about $20 on a model this age, as it's not particularly unique and you will almost certainly need to spend the same again on a new battery. Also make sure any Sony of this age you buy comes with a memory stick card as they're hard to come by.

what camera charger can i use for this one?
@DinoBytes2 жыл бұрын
The original AC charger is the Sony AC-L10A, which plugs into the S70 and charges its battery internally. But if you can't find one, I'd recommend buying a replacement battery and a separate charger for the battery, and charge it outside the camera. Any original battery is unlikely to work now.
