Sony SL-360HF Betamax VCR (repair attempt)

0:23 - That is the remote for the Sony SL-HF900. The SL-HF360 will probably respond to functions on the remote that it supports, but will ignore those it does not. 18:57 - On the SL-HF360 and SL-HF350, the VCR will always attempt to play the hi-fi audio if it is present. There is no way to voluntarily listen to the linear audio if there is hi-fi audio. (There is no "normal/hi-fi" switch.) These two machines appear to be an attempt by Sony to make the most stripped-down hi-fi VCRs they could -- they don't have stereo tuners, a simulcast mode, or even an "MPX" input. ☹ The SL-HF360, along with many low-end SuperBetas from the mid- to late '80s, can play βIs but not βI -- it will use the wrong de-emphasis on a βI tape (regardless of the position of the "SuperBeta" switch), so the picture will appear bright and washed out.

Seeing plastic gears inside the a malfunctioning machine gives one that sinking sensation. I have a Tandberg 64x reel-to-reel and it's from the mid 1960s. There's no plastic in it. Nowhere to be found, it's really before the time of molded plastic in Norwegian electronics, and it's a tank. But it works, going on 70 years old. I'm not against plastic, if sparely and strategically used, but making gears and cogs and loadbearing structures from plastic is preventing the restoration and maintenance of many good electronics. Damn shame, but awesome that 3D printing can replace some of those broken plastic parts. That's impressive.

Just recently discovered your channel and have watched many of your videos, old and new. Regarding this one, the parts on the motor shafts cracking is due to shrinkage of the plastic. The plastic used has proven to be unstable and shrinks over time. Given that it is press fit on a steel shaft, as it shrinks the stresses increase until it cracks. I have a mid ‘80’s Sony ES line CD player that has a motor driven “chucking” mechanism. The worm gear on the motor shaft has a crack extending a third of the length from the motor end. This is just short of the distance the shaft is inserted into it. So far it is working fine but I may have to reproduce the gear in the future. Unfortunately this is a common problem and if we want to keep this old tech going, we will need to use the tools available to replace these unobtanium parts.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing! I have three broken machines and I am trying to make one working one out of them! SL-HF400, SL-HF400 and SL-HF500. Mine are a bit different inside, but any info I can find helps know how it should operate.

Canada seems to me to be the reason why I understood everything when repairing an NTSC Device. I glued a 1x broken SONY SL-HF950ES (PAL/Mesecam) motor pulley for the worm drive of the cassette drawer with Pattex 100% REPAIR GEL (Henkel)

How did that work? I tried something similar about a year ago and it didn't last for me, however I think I used the wrong glue.

@@probnotstech If there is only one crack in the pulley, it is enough if the glue on the crome of the motor shaft sticks properly, if a "carrier" from the glue forms in the crack. The glue is not approved for PP and PE plastics because it contains NO solvents.

Hey there Great Channel thanks..... I just got a Sony SuperBta Hi Fi SL - 360 in good condition but tape keeps ejecting .... .... I followed most of what you suggested. It seems the machine grabs the tape and then I have to manually rewind the tape

This is so deja vu with what I've seen and done with two of my 711B3 units. My HF2000 is from 1993, relatively new, and failed early on. I will check that gear on the lacing motor. Question remains though, why does the unit lace itself upon turning the power on? And after it fully laces, why does the motor continue to try to pull the lacing ring further? Same too with that binding of the ring as it laces...silicone lube didn't seem to help. A shame about the HF360's worn heads; again, a familiar sight. Thank you for this; at least I'm not alone.

hi the home beta decks are well past there time now i been working on betacam sp digi decks i am finding alot of the 80's one still have alot of life as audio recorders note i do have alot of betacam video's that are working i am the only one in the uk who has alot of them note i am all ways getting asked if i would buy them word is getting a round hire a skip for them they would have to pay out with me they get money not alot in the south of the uk there's a good 30 left i have turn down because i only buy parts decks as not working decks the A500 A510 are well made still alot of hrs left in them love the 2nd run of them 75 65 1800 decks as parts again only
