This KZbin video helped me gain the skills to fix my own NTSC SuperBeta recorder. In Part 3, the front loading issue was addressed, providing insights to resolve it. I also learned about the machine's role as a backup to the SL-HF600 and its ability to play BIs High Band SuperBeta recordings. The correction mentioned the required nut spinner size for the drum motor disk, which is 7mm. Overall, the video equipped me with the knowledge needed to repair my recorder effectively. Thank you

Very good repair with re-phasing those carriage gears (with spring). The other issues are a bit of a mystery to me but glad it's operational for now.

Both the pause and the seach faults are probably related as when the pause issue went away so did the search one. I wonder if the fault is related to the screws or if gravity has something to do with it, perhaps a cold solder joint that is intermittently making a connection depending if the unit is upright or sideways and coincidently the connection will make or break when the unit is upright.
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
They certainly are related. But in its present state, they are not showing up and I will leave it that way. I wonder if the machine had those big plastic feet fitted for some reason related to that fault.

@@video99coukhow do you keep your digital files orginized when you transfer the tapes to digital?
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
@@stpworld I ask that customers number the tapes, so the files are numbered accordingly. For domestic tapes, I provide DV-AVI and MPEG4 files, in their own folders. I retain the files for a few weeks after the customer has received them, so they have time to make backups, before I delete the master files.

The Carriage switch made sense, and the takeup is a rubber tyre perhaps. That right pcb could have a problem with the cable connectors, black pins a common failure. Or a pcb crack. Is the bottom plate pushing the pcb up a tiny bit? Try pushing the pcb up to see if it goes odd. Personally i would just run away lol.
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
Reel drive on Sony doesn't use rubber drive surfaces. I did try pushing the PCB in the YT video but the fault didn't occur. I'm inclined to leave it alone, it's working reliably now. I'm about to order a 100V transformer and will likely be doing a short video about that.

I think the reason the VU meters aren't reading the same level is because you're playing a mono tape and this machine has linear stereo (The North American version is only linear mono). Even the slightest difference in the relative audio head-to-track height can cause this. I have a Hitachi VT-8E portable VHS recorder with linear stereo and I can hear the imbalance between the left and right channels depending on what machine the tape was recorded on.
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware it had linear stereo, I'll have to take a look at the audio head one day.
@crashbandicoot4everr Жыл бұрын
@@video99couk Believe me, it does. The service manual for the Japanese HF900 shows that the audio head plugs into CN351 on the board AU-13, and it shows two seperate audio heads on the diagram labeled CH1 and CH2. I believe Japan was the first country to broadcast TV in stereo, and that's the reason cosnumer VCRs with linear stereo existed there since 1979, or even earlier than that.
@160rpm Жыл бұрын
could it be that it's a stereo audio head reading two different parts of the mono signal?
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
According to the schematics, it's a mono head, but production changes happen.
@160rpm Жыл бұрын
@@video99couk Ah, well if it's not supposed to have linear stereo then that theory doesn't make much sense anyway

Typically with this mechanism, the gear closest to the door breaks, and the mechanism timing can't be adjusted properly. There's a guy named Plutonius selling replacements, I've installed 3 so far with success.
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
I think I briefly mentioned that on one of my earlier videos. I've been lucky that neither of my SuperBeta machines has damage to that gear.

There is also a defect in the power IC 【STK ××××】of Sanken Electric Co., Ltd., so I think you should be careful. I replaced the electrolytic capacitor 25V 33μF in the power supply circuit. Heat resistant temperature is 105℃.

Sorry ignore my previous comment. just noticed it is a Japanese unit which does run on 100 v. But then now I'm wondering why you asked about a transformer for a US/ Canadian unit.
@video99couk Жыл бұрын
I have a 230V to 110V transformer for my SL-HF600 already. What I was asking was if anyone has a 110V transformer from a scrap USA SL-HF900 since then this machine could share the 110V supply.

@@TTVEaGMXde Let's hope it's 230 V +/- 10%, i.e. no higher than 253 V. Unlikely to be below 230 in the UK I think.

I probably spent about 10 hours on the SL-HF900. Time well spent though, it's a very capable machine.
