"Getting everything" makes complete sence and a great way of explaining it.. The receiver was a SONY STR 7055a receiver

Great review Kelvin. Sony owner here. My 50 years old TA-1144 still going strong. Got it from my father and still use it everyday.

Hi, yes...the 70th Sony's are really great. In my setup I've a TA2000F Preamp with a TA3200F Poweramp. Build like a tank and sounds for me since today perfect.

I had, and stupidly sold, the TA1150. It was an incredible amp, way ahead of its time with outputs for 2 sets of speakers plus a centre speaker! It could also be used as a preamp, and sounded, and looked, incredible

What a coincidence! I have just purcased a Sony TA 3650... underrated, underpriced - hurray! - and a definite sleeper. Built like a tank and sounding excellent. No "Marantz Tax" for vintage Sony amps...get 'em while you can!

“Reverse” stereo can be handy for two situations. One is a quick fix for when the speaker cables are wrongly connected. Two is to have the right stereo image when sitting with your back to the loudspeakers. In case of working from home, my office desk is at the other wall and a reverse stereo ‘could’ be a welcome gimmick for the day :)

I was in the Navy in 1975 and I had my first real spending money, $168.00 every two weeks! I bought this amp and I loved it. I bought a pair of BIC speakers and a fully manual AR turntable from a friend and I had a nice little first system. The only problem was that I only got to listen to it when I was home on leave. D'oh! The frequency response was 10-110k so it was a true wide band design. I only listened to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin etc. on it so I don't know how it sounded on delicate classical music. LOL

I love the elegant industrial look and sound of those silver-face integrated amps from Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Marantz, and other giants of the Golden Age (Silver Age?) of '60s and '70s Hi-Fi. Sansui, too, but theirs were black (usually with silver knobs).

I have one one these, sitting and waiting for repair. A couple of weeks ago i was thinking of selling it. Thanks to you and this video i'm keeping it! Thank you! I used the Sony with a pair of Kef Cadenza speakers but also B&W DM2 MK2. Talking about filling the room, the whole building was shaking😅

Great job, Kelvin. I love the looks of those 70s integrated amps. My vintage McIntosh preamp has the same reverse, l+r malarkey. I never use those settings.

I found a TA 1150 in an e-waste bin years ago, great little amp, only drawback is volume control is a slider. These were on a list of amps recommended by Advent for use with their speakers.

Hard to imagine now that, back in the day, Sony was a minnow among the Japanese giants. They had to compete by being damned good at what they did.

Interesting review, I always thought the vintage Marantz amps were super smooth, didn't realise Vintage Marantz can sound a bit edgy? Still looking for my first Vintage Marantz amp.

Thank you Kelvin, bring back one of old amplifier. Which I used for awhile. Mine was a 2nd hand amplifier. But to me not much detail in sound. To me bit dull based on a comparison with my Luxman L-235 using same set of B&W V204.

I've got a Sony TA-F5A amp, about 60w I think. Mine is a bit more modern - say 1985 ish, anyway its sounds as you say.... BIG....and has amazing grip and power, have to say its my pride and joy. Sony amps seem a little under the radar in the audio world and one thing I have to say comparing it to "British" amps, its hellavamore reliable than the NAD's of the world and others of its ilk.

I have a Sony ST-A4 Tuner. It's decent, good build quality but the Sansui TU-517 is a much better machine. Reception, channel separation, sound signature. Later on in de late eighties and Nineties Sony became the defacto brand for everybody who had a bit of money to spend so they would not buy a SuperTech or a Yoko. Replaced Philips in the Netherlands. It is the Coldplay of stereo brands so I tend to avoid it. I see one for sale that has the binding post tilted 90 degrees, so they look vertical. That may explain the strange out order.

The NAD was cheap... it sounded cheap, it looked cheap, but it was very affordable. The NAD is seriously overrated, but the myth surrounding the bargain basement, budget wonder will not die. I used Quad amplification back when the NAD was first available... I listened to the NAD at my local hi-fi shop and I was underwhelmed, to say the least. The Sony will be far superior, in every way!

@Jezza-m5k When you heard the Nad do you remember the equipment you heard with it ? In 1982 myself and my brother got a Nad 3020. Along with the Dual 505, Akai Cassette deck, Toshiba Tuner and Celestion 121 speakers it was just great buying records & taping off John Peel . For yourself to own Quad in the early 80s was a big deal and many years later I collected the 303/33/FM3 44/405 /FM4 . About the same time a friend had for sale a Nad 3020. Still sounded rich, dreamy & creamy . For sure it's not perfect but it has the unique ability of making every lp or cd sound really good where as some more expensive equipment sound was hit & miss. The quad stuff alas was sold on but I still own the Nad . My other amps are Yamaha As1200, Ariand kt 88 , Leak 130 . I still fire up the Nad up once a week . It was the gateway to the hobby & I still love it

You ought to know that, the only sony amps worth bothering with are the ES variants!. The standard ones are s#%t. The elevated standard is there all through the components used & the all important beefy power supply. I own several of their ES bits of kit, they are good sounding pieces of audio gear.
