The tape was threaded incorrectly at the beginning of the video. It was supposed to go over the small wire lever not under it, that is part of the auto-stop mechanism It is tied to a switch that kills power to the motor when the tape ends. Those caps, even defective would not have caused the motor to stop running, those are connected in parallel to the switches to prevent sparks. Changing the electrolytics would make the machine sound a thousand times better.

True these are sony properietry spark quenchers with .1uf 250v and 120ohm 1/2watt resistence connected in parallel, nothing to do with starting of motor , the tape was not correctly threaded , I have a Sony TC350 and a Sony TC 660 with me I am looking for the service manual for Sony TC 660 if somebody can share it I will be obliged , writing to you from India

Hope you are still monitoring. I have an identical reel-to-reel. The motor works fine but the pinch roller/fly wheel doesn't turn . Any suggestions about how to fix.

my friend have a OKI 555 it powers on but motor is not working.. you did a great video.. i think we should try based on what you did..

there is a needle left of the heads you must the tape under the needle to turn the motor on

Nice tape recorder , as said already by macuser1k the tape was threaded incorrectly and the autostop switch had the motor switched off.

Hello, great video, I have one of these exact models and it works well except for playback, it's a tad slow and I can't seem to figure it out. I was wondering if you had any of the same issues and figured it out, thanks a lot for making this.

If you were able to run the tape player without the defective caps then what characteristic did the "dried out" caps present, to prevent the player from running as found? I thought drying out only applied to electrolytic capacitors.

+hankus253 not sure how they failed just guessing >:) from what i remember there dry inside. last owner could have a had a voltage spike.

+Karma Electronics Those caps appear to be 0.1 uF 120 ohm surge suppressors or interrupter. Look up OKAYA interrupter 0.1uf+120 W. I was just curious if you actually tested them and if so what I should be looking for if I find a bad one in a circuit. Do they test shorted, open, no capacity, low or high ESR??

I have it's cousin, the TC250a. It gets to speed just fine, but there is no audio. Faint audio out of the right speakers on playback. But no audio from the line in. Any ideas?

I would clean and demagnetize the heads thoroughly. On a deck this old, they could be filthy. That won't fix your line in issue, but playback should be much better.

I have the same exact model and when i dont have a tape in it it looks like it works fine once i put a tape on the resistance from the pinch roller and the reel collecting the tape gains alot of tension and the motor just stops do you know what i could try?

i had the same thing. i found i had to adjust the plastic band around each spindle used to keep tension. it was out of adjustment and would just pull the motor to a stop

can you buy from newtech on line? I just bought a tc 252 and mine runs too fast when in play mode regardless of what speed it's on

the speed problem must be due to frequency 50HZ or 60 HZ in the power supply , you can try changing the capacitor of the motor if your country has 50hz cycle then the capacitor value will be 1.5uf and if its 60hz cycle the capacitor value has to be 2.0 uf
