I have a same model, I bought it nonfunctional and brought it back to its functioning state. I would like a professional look and calibration done as you did yours. Where are you located?

I am going to have a WM-3 for Christmas and was wondering if you could repair it if it doesn't work? I live in Canada (I don't know if it's an issue).

Great video! Do you still take a look at people's walkmans for potential repair? Mine has some loud distortion when the volume is turned up, mostly on one of the sides, but both seem a bit messed up.

What is the name and model of that machine for cheking herz and amplitude?

It’s a Fluke oscilloscope. Most oscilloscopes will work. There is a tape playing with a sine wave recording on I and the scope is measuring it for accuracy.

Hi, I just found my original Sony TPS-L2 Walkman and put batteries in it and the one cassette tape I have and I pressed play the red operation light comes on but there is no movement of the cap stands. Any idea what the problem may be?

@@NicholsonNitroWorks It might simply be that the belts have become rigid with the years, and the rest is fine. Open it up to see.

How much would a full refurbishment be? I replaced the belts and clean the head after a few minutes the playback it'll start dragging to a crawl and eventually just stop but all functions work the fast forward, rewind, play/pause, hotline button, volume sliders but it can't make it through one song. I've tried adjusting the speed, different types, and new batteries but nothing seems to work

It does sound like a possible capacitor that is turning into a resistor because of age on the speed control board. Please keep in mind I work on them as a hobby and not as a business. I only work on them at a leisurely pace in my spare time. I also give no guarantees on services. Everything is at your risk and cost. They are 40 years old and never meant to last that long. I would inspect the unit and give an estimate on the repair. If your able to solder you might be willing to try to replace all the capacitors on the speed control board.
@blazer4448
@blazer4448 2 жыл бұрын
@@NicholsonNitroWorks I'm afraid of it being the capacitor because while I can solder I'm not too comfortable with that just because of amount of wires but at the same time if I don't try and test them then the walkman still be non-operational

@@blazer4448 What you want to do is take a lot of close up pictures of where all of the wire connections are on the boards so you can look back later to make sure they are in the right positions. It is a detailed process and it works. The more pictures and angles the better. Wires break off just because of the 40 years of wear. Since you really need to remove the capacitors to test them you might as well replace them. That will take time and patience.

@@NicholsonNitroWorks well I have time and the patience but I don't want to ruin the device, I will give it a shot because I'm going to service it in the future I should learn how to do it. Where could I find the capacitors and wires?
@NicholsonNitroWorks
@NicholsonNitroWorks 2 жыл бұрын
@@blazer4448 You need to look at all the capacitors you want to replace and write down the values. the voltage and the capacitance. Then shop for them online at Mouser.com you also have to make sure the new ones will fit in the same space as the old ones. Some new ones are not the same dimensions as Sony had to make a lot of things fit in the small space for the time. The industry has moved on to new technologies for capacitors. They don't use the old through hole style electrolytic capacitors any more so sometimes you have live with what's available. There is usually a modern equivalent though. The wires don't have to be replaced unless they are broken in half and it is now to short to make the connection. The wires just have to be replaced with the same gauge size wire which is very small in diameter but high in gauge size. Its like a 30 gauge copper stranded wire. Use a 6X magnifying goggle and a head lamp along with helping hands holders to help you. You should have great lighting also. Sony engineered the Walkman well so no parts have to be forced or muscled apart. They should all fit properly and move freely unless something is bent or broken. So do not force anything. Use tweezers and gentleness. Make sure the motor is functioning properly. you can directly wire the motor to batteries and let it run and make sure it is not slowing down on its own after a certain period of time.

@@NicholsonNitroWorks yeah. Here is a video I was sent from the seller illustrating the functionality. You can hear the warble. When I recieved it and tested it myself, sure enough it has that same warble in the sound. Every thing else works, though, including the hotline. Would this kind of issue be something you could fix?
