Thank you for making these! There really isn't enough in-depth material online for CRT repair, and you really help to make the process seem more manageable.

Thanks for watching. I have more CRT's to service and I'll keep filming them as I go. Thanks for the feedback too. I've also got other videos about other vintage collectibles.

I’m so grateful for this channel! I’m about to open up my own Sony WEGA KV-27FS120 and I needed to see how to unfasten it safely. I need to fix the bend and move the yolk, otherwise the TV is in excellent shape and the picture is superb. Thank you so much!!

WOW Steve, I love looking at teardown videos and this one takes the cake. I feel that the popularity of your Sony TV videos are so popular, the Retro Tech channel should have a subdivision for itself. The "How to clean and what's inside unboxing" vid that you did was over in the thousands. Nice job Steve. Anthony...

Thanks Anthony. I've got a couple more CRT's that I'll be taking apart and rebuilding too.

Such a useful video. Out of everything with CRT repair the only thing that worries me everytime is re connecting the cables in their proper places even with images to help. Soldering, discharging even replacing a larger component like the flyback. None of it compares to getting the cables in the right places ha ha.

Awesome content! Any advice on adjusting a flat trinitron from the early 00's? All the local goodwill stores are stocked full of them, they look decent for retro gaming, but all have horrid geometry! With so many different options to adjust convergence and geometry its hard to figure out what to adjust first. Thanks!
@RetroTechUSA6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the great feedback. You should start by googling each of the TV's model numbers. These are on the back. That should help you find the features of each TV. Then just start by getting the best one of the bunch. After that you should see if the TV has any on screen menu that adjusts geometry. Most TV's don't have this feature though. You'll have to open the TV most likely and make some manual adjustments.

About a week ago I bought a 27” 1994 Sony Trinitron CRT. It worked beautifully for a few days but it unfortunately conked out on me. I wash watching Top Gun on the ole vcr when the tv abruptly shut off. Now, it won’t power back on. I’m very sad. This tv is beautiful. I took off the back and it was very dusty inside. Cleaned out a lot of the dust and took out/put back the power plug thingy (I’m not tech savvy). The tv still won’t turn on. Any advice?! Thanks for your time

Great stuff as always Steve. Long shot asking here but not sure if anybody's got any ideas about an issue I'm having on my Trinitron. It's been randomly shutting off and on by itself lately, and every so often it displays random sequences of letters and numbers across the screen (same font style as the channel numbers). I haven't figured out how to best describe this issue so haven't had any luck searching through google.
@RetroTechUSA6 жыл бұрын
Kevin H. Hey. Thanks for watching. The shut off part sounds like a voltage problem. However the other problem with the menu is not from voltage most likely. That may be an issue with the chip in your tv processing the OSD menu. Does the TV stay on long before it shuts off?
@kevinh.25096 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! Yeah, I am also thinking there must be something wrong with control or computer components in the TV. Likely not a simple fix. I would say the TV runs fine for about 10 - 20 minutes before I start seeing the random letters appear on the screen. Sometimes the letters just stay on the screen indefinitely, other times the TV shuts off by itself and comes back on and the picture is correct. But then the pattern repeats itself every half an hour or so, i would say.
@RetroTechUSA6 жыл бұрын
That's a tough fix. I would suggest you keep an eye out for a replacement CRT that is similar to the one you have. Then once you have a good one, you can take your current TV apart and try to either rebuild it or troubleshoot the problem and hopefully fix it.
@kevinh.25096 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I'll do that :)

Here's a surprise - the TV fixed itself! I really have no idea how it happened by I no longer have the issue. What I did was leave in unplugged for a few days, then with the TV unplugged, I held down the on/off switch for a couple of seconds before finally plugging the TV into the outlet again. I restart the TV, and leave it running for over an hour and have not seen the issue return. Very strange. I know in computers you can hold down the power button while unplugged to discharge some of its capacitors or charge-holding components, but is that the same with TVs?
@laumpolumpio4 жыл бұрын
When you were sliding the grounded screw driver under the suction cup, have you heard a pop?? no?? , I have news for you.... or most likely, you already figured it out, some CRT displays had an auto discharging mech so the repair techs didn't have to be discharging the crt everytime these were sent for servicing.

I have a very similar model Trinitron that I recently got for free. A friend told me these TVs in particular (the flat screen trinitrons) have some sort of anti-glare sheet/film over the front of the screen that really dim a lot of the picture down. And that removing that would improve the picture a lot. Any clue if there’s any validity to that? Great vid btw.

Breaks my heart, I was hoping to see some more work done on this set in-depth since mine has similar problems. I think mine can be fixed by rotating the yoke and adjusting the convergence rings, possibly the focus pot too. It seems like a simple job and I don't want to throw out my set being that I don't have a lot of options for good CRTs in my area, was lucky enough to get a 27S42 locally. Any safety tips you'd recommend for adjusting the yoke? About the same as in your convergence strip video? I haven't had time to watch it just yet
@RetroTechUSA6 жыл бұрын
Cybrisk Don't worry. There are going to be more videos on this set. This is how to take the TV apart so I can replace all the capacitors and add RGB. I'll be documenting that too. Then I'll put it back together and fire it up!
@RetroTechUSA6 жыл бұрын
Cybrisk I also made a 3 minute video about yoke adjustments and corner concergence about a month ago. I'll leave a link when I get to my PC, or just check through the CRT Quicktalks playlist I have on my channel. Thanks.

How safe is calibrating the geometry of a CRT TV... when turned on... and opened up... with the exposed tube? I thought I had to discharge the tube before moving knobs (potentiometers), but I have seen on some videos that the TV set is on while doing this... What is the part I can touch, and what is the part I must not touch, when doing this?
@SSBMDeekus Жыл бұрын
Underside of the circuit board has the hot part of the board clearly delinated. Don't touch that, but the rest of the CB is safe. You can touch the back of the tube with one hand if you need to but be careful not to make a circuit with your other hand and also wear rubber-soled shoes. Parts of the the neckboard itself are also hot, but probably won't shock you. Adjusting pots/convergence rings is fine as long as you're careful not to accidentally also touch anything that's hot.

Shouldn’t use your left hand to discharge. It’s closer to your heart. If shocked you’re chances of heart being affected are greater. That’s why even electricians that are left handed use their right hand when risk is involved.
