The shrapnel/projectile index of this EOL is epic. The Sony shadow mask can often be heard singing as the tube operates. It comes from the individual wires vibrating

Over the years, I've had several Sony sets like this and most had weak picture tubes. I recall one that looked like brand new, from a cosmetic standpoint, but the R and B guns were dead, while the G tested like new. Raising the heater voltage and rejuvenation did nothing for it. With a hot tube, these sets produce an amazing picture, but finding one with a hot tube is a challenge. On the subject of people watching a set with a near-dead tube, I've seen it many times and the owners thought it had a wonderful picture. In fact, I usually wouldn't mess with the picture quality unless they requested because I've made a bad set look good, only to get yelled at for messing up the picture.

As a calibrator, I must state that brighter does not always = better/more accurate picture. If a night scene, from E.T. or such lights your viewing room up like the midday sun, it's time to examine your TV's picture mode, other settings.

Interesting thing with that Sony by 1980 most companies had stopped using slide potentiometers for their television sets. But here Sony carried on with it.

My parents bought a slightly used KV-1915 and that thing lasted forever. It looked almost exactly like this one. It had a fabulous picture. It was very bright and a had excellent contrast, with dark, inky blacks and rich color. When it was about 12 years old, I took it to work one day to rejuvenate the tube and the emission came right up and it had a great picture on it, for about a year.
@Ralphs-House10 ай бұрын
You should get an Emmy for the end of that video. Sat here watching in bed here in the UK last night and it made me grin from ear to ear - for the greater good naturally. Always watch your videos and mentioned you a couple of times in mine as I love your methodical approach to repair. I wouldn't go near a CRT set but I've learnt much in terms of tackling issues with old stuff from watching you. Thank you. Ralph's House!

Great video Shango, always a saturday treat when you post a video, out of all the 80's trinitons ive seen, its always the red emission that gets weak before green and blue, green always seems the last one with a tolerable amount of emission, but when the crt is in great shape they do produce a great picture, Andy in the UK

My grandparents had a 1970s Sears set with those preset selectors and the neon lamp indicator for the preset buttons, "sensor touch" or something like that. Sanyo apparently made the one Sears sold and the thing was a real beast to move around. They gave it to us when they retired and moved away and it worked fine until the early 90s. It was definitely high hour too, as they (and we) watched a lot of television.

The aperture grille is under tremendous tension. You can actually play a tune on the wires. That was a revolutionary CRT design which yielded much brighter pictures because of the minimal loss of beam current thru the grille. Thanks for an exceptional EOL!

Shango: EPIC -EOL! Actually jumped because I had the volume up. That was AMAZING and well-cut! Nice Job and Video! Anyway, the Monarch VOM was also sold by Radio Shack as model # 22-049, originally $16.95; I know because as a kid I wanted one of those so bad but never got one! I am sorry to say, but I have gotten one years later and all the precision resistors (and they are very odd values!) have deviated greatly from their marked values so they are not wire wound which maybe they did for AC and being able to measure sound at higher frequencies from say a stereo etc. I plan to completely re-do mine using metal-film ganged pairs and trim-pots to replace them. Many of the originals are high in value, so you can parallel meg-ohm level resistors across them in many cases (some you will need to trim, usually the lower-values). However, before you start, place it in the 30uA (0.03mA) range and check the movement for linearity with varying levels of input current. Some of these movements were either bad or can go bad essentially turning it into a 'shelf-queen!' EDIT: Also the extra insulating washers on the 1200V and 3000V can easily break or falloff (depending on the style they installed) so if loose, glue them soon! On the dirty filthy sets, we used to take all manner of electronics (esp. communications sets) to the car-wash and hose them down with soap then rinse them; anything that did not have paper dials or such was fair game--even wood cabinets. We would then shake them off, bring them home and use an air-hose to blow out any water from enclosed spaces. Then we would put them in either the passenger compartment or the trunk and let the sum bake them out. This takes time but many failures like frequency-drifting, high voltage arcing and other faults magically go away, plus they are so much nicer to work on or scavenge the parts. Also, thanks for showing the Trinitron mask and guns; I never saw them 'deconstructed'--LOL! Anyway, again EPIC EOL Video! 73...

Most interesting video thank you. I am a big fan of the old Sony sets. That’s the only brand I used in my house. Most still function just fine, not that I use most of them now. Over the many years I only experienced a couple failures, a couple I was able to repair. Sad the sets are worth nothing now.

Enjoyed the Video as always. The Sony aperture grille has 2 horizontal wires to minimize the vertical ones from vibrating. Some customers would complain about them one they saw it. Nothing we could do about them other than sell them another brand TV. They did have a great picture.
@FindLiberty10 ай бұрын
That vertical aperture grill can even become red hot and sag a bit, almost melting when driven too hard. I recall this was easiest to see with an alignment cross hatch pattern with a few bold white vertical lines.
@eDoc202010 ай бұрын
The number of horizontal wires also depends on the size and resolution of the tube. Smaller low-resolution TVs would only need one while large high-resolution computer monitors would have at least two.

Never use rejuvenate on a trinitron but you can turn the filament up and do a remove shorts. That will sometimes bring it back without stripping the cathode.

Continuing education... I was attending customer training last week at a major TV transmission equipment manufacturer. I brought up there is a big gap between what engineers consider a watchable picture and what viewers are willing to put up with. None of the "engineers" in the room had attended a Sgrignoli lecture on ATSC.

I had a similar tv set as my daily when I was a teenager. It had no Sony branding, instead it was branded UNIVERSUM which was a brand of a catalogue store in Germany back in the day. It had 16 channels instead of 14 like this one, but the design was pretty much the same apart from that. It had a beautiful picture for the longest time. I gave it to my father, who used it in Hungary on the SECAM system there until they converted to PAL. On both systems the set was working perfectly for many years. They only had to convert the audio offset frequency, because Hungary used a different one than Germany.
