The side by side comparison would have been impressive if you had used the image from the same disc. The upscale feature is to enhance 1080P video. Instead of comparing a standard 1080P image to the upscaled image you compared a 4K image to a 1080P image.

The freezing issue is caused by the player dynamically updating Bluray/DVD info from the internet. Go to Bluray/DVD settings>BD Internet Connection and select 'Do not allow'. I haven't had any trouble since and don't care about d'loaded bluray info anyway.

I am glad I found this comment, I grabbed this on a black Friday deal for $150. Waiting for it to come in. I was wondering if the internet connection might have something to do with the freezing issues people are reporting. I plan on upgrading to the latest firmware, then turning the wifi/internet off. I want it for disc playback only anyways. My LG Oled has all the internet features I need for streaming.

I had the same problem too. My player isn't connected to wifi because there's no point to since I have a smart tv. When ever it freeze on one scene. I eject the disc tray. Then close it. Then it worked flawless.

This player has great SDR to HDR upconversion (Set HDR Output to AUTO). It enhances the dynamic range of SDR content such as regular Blu-ray without crushing blacks or clipping the whites. Its surprisingly good. This feature alone makes it the best budget 4K blu-ray player on the market.

I would suggest that you use your TV for upscaling as much as possible. Assuming you have a 4K TV, the processor in that is likely to have higher capabilities than this player. Secondly, you'll not want the player to have to push the upscaled signal through the HDMI cable. It's likely to cause stutters and such. Could depend of course depending on what hardware you're using.

There really haven't been many new 4K Blu-ray players in the last couple of years (other than the PS5 & Xbox Series X, of course), so don't let the UBP-X700's age stop you. It's broadly regarded as the best bang-for-buck 4K Blu-ray player on the market; it doesn't have the enhanced features of more expensive Blu-ray players, but it's usually the cheapest player that supports Dolby Vision.

The dual HDMI out lets you run video direct to your projector/TV and the audio output to your processor/receiver via HDMI also. This is the first player that matches the video image quality of my Oppo Bluray, which doesn't stream and has trouble with some new releases. If you switch receivers or speakers, use just the single HDMI to set up so you can use the on screen menu of your processor and when you get it the way you like switch to dual outs for no compromise viewing. You have to activate the audio only output in the 'Home' setup menu under 'HDMI'. I know the video signal isn't supposed to be altered in the pass-thru of the receiver but my OCD tells me otherwise.

Very in-depth video review! The biggest disadvantage of this player is the lack of Dolby Digital Plus support, which is a shame since Netflix and Disney Plus provide Dolby Atmos in a DD+ codec container. This means, you cannot access to their Atmos options. Atmos is supported "only" in a Dolby TrueHD codec basis on discs. Dolby Vision HDR needs to be "manually" selected to output it since the player did not support it originally. If Sony added DD+ support, this device would be the best money could buy. Why SONY? Why?

I've been thinking about buying this unit ... So, if I put my 4K UHD movie in with an Atmos soundtrack through my Atmos enabled 4K receiver, the receiver won't play that soundtrack? Or, am I missing something?

@@jimlev You can enjoy Dolby Atmos or DTS X object-based soundtracks encoded in Blu-ray discs (via bitstream). If you are planning to access streaming apps like Netflix or Disney+ you'll be out of luck with object-based soundtracks because Dolby Atmos is embedded in a Dolby Digital Plus codec which the player does not support as of January 2021. For streaming only I do not recommend this player until Sony firmwares a support for DD+.

@@jimlev I'm afraid UHD MKV films WON'T output Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD) via bitstream, it'll be re-encoded as regular Dolby Digital to obtain sound. MKVs with HDR10 and DTS X (DTS-HD MA) WILL play just fine through USB Port. If your library is mainly digital (MKVs) or you consume lots of streaming content then you're better off with an Nvidia Shield TV player. The Shield plays almost everything except discs.

I have a Samsung S95B 4K TV - it does not have Dolby Vision - it does have HDR10+ . I note that this Sony X700 does not have HDR10+ but it does have Dolby vision, which does not work if your 4K TV does not have Dolby Vision also. So what would be the best blueray player to buy to suit my Samsung S95B TV - this Sony X700 or say the Panasonic UB420 which does have HDR10+ as on my TV ?? Further, is there any advantage with the Sony X700, which has "Native 4K Playback" which the Panasonic UB420 does not have? (I understand Native 4K playback allows the blueray player to read/collect more detail direct off the 4K blueray disc - correct me if I am wrong?)

Im so surprised to see all the comments of people either just getting into 4K or have not yet. I honestly didn’t think that many people weren’t as even budget tvs are 4K and dirt cheap the last 5 years or so. I’ve been solely 4K since 2014. Now I’m strictly oled the last two years. Just getting back into discs as I wasn’t to experience the best my lg oled has to offer. I bought the x700 and about 30 uhd movies. It froze on the first two brand new movies I watched so I’m not thrilled with the player. If it keeps acting up I’m returning and buying the Panasonic ub820. I have ps5 and Xbox series x, but don’t want to use the console uhd player bc they don’t support dolby Vision which is a no go.

Get the UBP-X800m2 - it's currently priced just below $250 - does everything the X700, and X800 (predecessor) did + it supports Dolby Vision AND Dolby Atmos. Aside from 8K, it's relatively "future=proof !!!!!!"

@Yama Fanboy could be wrong but i think products using hdmi talk to each other ( of sorts) and know if atmos will work. So it may not even try to send the atmos audio ( discs with atmos still do 5.1 or even stereo) and in the off chance it did then it would just mix the atmos into 5.1 4k pass through I believe just allows the picture to pass through the reciever with out it adding or detracting anything from the original content. Personally I have had 2 of these and returned both. First one wouldn't do Dolby vision even after updates, froze multiple times, wouldn't play some chapters in movies ( 4k only) 2nd one woukd skip chapters, lose audio for entire chapters and voice sync was out when using Dolby vision I have a Panasonic DP UB820 coming Costs pretty much double but supposedly doesn't have any of these issues

@Yama Fanboy does the receiver have HDCP 2.2? This would be needed for 4K as it is the security protection. If not then you would want to use the video port to the TV, and the audio to the receiver. Atmos is just extra data to the receiver but is a TrueHD base. The player wouldn’t send the Atmos, or receiver would just throw it out. Atmos would not be mixed in.

so here's the thing, i already use a sony BDP S3500, i'm not sure if it's been hacked or if it was made by sony to be region free, don't know and don't care, it does exactly what i wanted it to do. however, when i played specifically the droopy theatrical collection, this weird, half circle, transparent type of interface would cover the screen at the beginning of each episode. i contacted sony support and they essentially told me how to disable all onscreen interface which doesn't bother me too much, there is the slight annoyance of things like searching for a specific scene and not being able to see something like the scene counter telling me i'm on scene 1/20 or something like that. is it worth picking this up, or should i stick with my current player?

So I have been using this player for a week now. 100% disc playing. I dont use the apps. My biggest problem is sometimes I can hear the audio from my sound bar, other times I cant and I have to switch to TV speakers when playing a disc. I am watching a disc now. I had to switch to tv speakers bc no audio from soundbar. But then i restarted the movie from beginning now all of a sudden I can hear the audio from my soundbar. Is there a fix for this?

Hi I have the UBP-X800M2 4K Blu ray player and before I had a Panasonic TV and now I have the Sony 85 X85K 4K LED TV 2022 TV and I used to use a standard HDMI cable I think it was HDMI 2.0 and now I have bought Ugreen HDMI Cable HDMI 2.1 Cable 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz Ultra High Speed 48Gbps and I was wondering if I had to change anything on my TV in the settings or change anything on my Blu ray Player in settings to get the 4K Picture to get the most out of my Blu ray Player and get the best picture quality?

Disc authoring for regular blu-ray has gone downhill since the release of 4k. The disc quality of blu-ray is now closer to DVD, so that 4k appears superior !

I have this 4k player. I haven’t used it in a while and when I tried to play the Batman in 4K, it has Dolby Vision on the desk so the disk is Dolby Vision first of all you have to go in to settings and switch it to Dolby Vision instead of HDR. it doesn’t automatically do that which I think it’s terrible. Now, when I tried to play Adobe disc, it doesn’t play it correctly. Everything‘s all red and blurry and when I tried to stream Netflix, it was the same thing because Netflix uses Dolby Vision so I turned Dolby Vision off and put in 4K HDR format. It played all the discs even the Dolby Vision 4K discs fine so Dolby Vision is not working any longer. Also I tried for an update with the software and it was up-to-date so I don’t know what’s going on with.

If you only want to play a movie and you have the 4k disc then internet is not necessary but this kind of 4k players can also play Netflix and other services for which you're gonna need wifi connection of course.

This player was a nightmare for me. Al.ost every film on 4k would freeze about 5 minutes from the end of the film. Tried every option to sort on line but only a power off and unplug would work. Exchanged for the X800 M2. Bit more cost but has been 100% reliable.

It's because 8K is just a gimmick. To even notice the slightest difference in 8K, you need a 100+ inch screen and you need to be sitting 2ft away from it, which is just ridiculous.

The only thing that kind of sucks about this player is every time you switch between a dolby vision disc and a regular HDR 10 or 1080p Blu-ray you have to go into the menu and toggle the dolby vision on and off. It really is a PITA especially when you're 30 minutes into a movie and you try to remember if you left it on the right setting. Sony REALLY needs to update this through a software patch.

@@lobodosmares007 You will have to read the manual as I set it up some time ago. I believe the default digital data transmission is not "raw" which carries all the data (including the upper channels). The default data transfer is a processed version which maxes out at 5.1. Just read the docs.

Hi, I have a question regarding sound. I will be purchasing the Sony X900H tv, Samsung Q70T sound bar and Sony UBPX700 4k player. How should I connect all three? Some say to connect 4k player to sound bar then sound bar to TV (arc). Other say connect 4k player to TV and sound bar to TV. Keep in mind I want to use the Dolby Atmos (not sure if this changes anything). Also, the UBPX700 has two HDMI's (1 is video/audio and 2 is just audio), which one should I use? Thank you.

I own a One S and am going to buy a Series X as soon as one becomes available. I am still buying this. Reason being the One S and Series X do not support Dolby Vision on 4K discs. They only support Dolby Vision on games (Series X only), and streaming apps.

I bought this model and Sony says it does do Dolby Atmos, can’t prove it yet though , because I’m still waiting on my Vizio SB36512-f6 Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar. I’ll try to update when I finally get the sound bar from Costco.

I have tested out with the UBP-X700 to play a Dolby Atoms demo MKV On the USB and it does not supported the audio format it is very disappointing, I will hope Sony will do a firmware update to fix this.. I've been waiting for the update for almost two years

can it play all kinds of video files? I want to have a bluray player that can do that and also having 4k in it. This might be weird to some people, but all my dvd collections and bluray collection are being converted into files so that I can put it on my phone or tablet and watch on the go.

It's been 3 years. Is this still the best 4k player for the money? I paid $200 3 years ago and it seems like you need to pay $300+ now to get the same features. I thought electronics got cheaper over time.

x800mk2 is far better but an ordinary movie lover would be better off with an Apple TV 4K with 4K Dolby Vision iTunes films in all honesty along with its future proofing.

@@BarcelonasHotCrowd I agree but that means you have to have good Internet and unlimited data for streaming 4K movies constantly. So you can’t have any data caps which is expensive. The movies are usually slightly cheaper with streaming apps. So you might make up some of the difference.

I've owned mine for quite awhile and still can't see the complete menu screen to fit my TV (too large). Aspect ratio issue just on this device. Sony's customer support is closed due to covid.

Got this and I'm not so impressed with the UI. Apps can't be removed and are extremely limited and the text looks like a mid 2000's dvd player. Samsung seems to be king of the UI.

Yeah user interface is extremely lacking especially from a solid brand like Sony. Great capability and playability for the price though.
