The company hasn't evolved it's design (hw or sw) in way too long and it's shipping flagship phones in N America with disabled fingerprint sensors. Obviously the mobile division isn't where a lot of effort is going. I just happen to like this particular phone because it has a camera that does things no other phone camera can do.

The US government is also the main reason why Sony can't put fully working fingerprint scanners in their country. They have a deal with a US carrier that will expire next year and hopefully allow them to provide an update that would enable it. Still better than getting the inferior version of a phone in the US for the same price the superior version costs in the other countries *cough S8 cough*

Well, Sony had made a lot of missteps in the past, from the Z3+ to the X Performance. The XZ Premium is probably the phone which I feel is the first step in properly righting the ship. I hope they keep going with whatever made them decide to actually start making a worthy Sony device.

The price for the Sony Xz premium right now is lower than any of the other big phones. And the Xz premium has just about everything other phones have and perhaps even more to offer. Sadly it still won't get the respect it deserves. Super slow MO, 4K screen, headphone jack, water resistance, stereo speakers (front firing)..and Yes, so what it has bezels.

The HDR mode is indead so annoying! You can only do this in pro mode... Then the OIS is not in the normal slide of pro mode but again hidden in the settings.. WHY!? other then that fully agree. The 960fps doesn't get boring, But for me where the camera matters... I can't stand the XZ premium..

Concept Creator HDR is called *Backlight Scene" and it works properly on Auto and Manual modes. Why would you need OIS, which produces softness and blurriness on the corners of pictures/videos, when you can have Sony's unreal *Intelligent Active* digital stabilization. I'm as honest as I can be, take an XZ/XZs/XZp on your hands and try recording with Intelligent Active enabled. Compare it with another OIS recording from another phone and I strongly believe that there's no chance in hell you'll choose OIS.

Long-time owner of the Sony Z5 here. The build quality is faultless, the design was enough to raise eyebrows during my visit to the US (wasn't available there at the time), and the fingerprint sensor is so smooth, you forget that it's there when you're unlocking the phone. Nice to see that Sony have stuck to all this with the XZ series.

Bezel hater alert. We get the dual front facing stereo speakers and large front camera sensor, and the large bezel means big protection to the main screen. Drop your S8 now on a concrete for about waist height and show it to me in fully working condition with no cracks or dents whatsoever.

Ironically, my biggest issue with Xperia devices is the camera. Sony make some of the best mobile phone sensors, but their camera software is just not capable of really taking the best advantage of it. The camera app is not all that logical, and often times there are far too many trade offs: No manual HDR, the camera has a habit of refocusing just before you take a shot, the phone overheats when filming 4K video and crashes the app, etc.

And that's why the XZP is my daily driver, not my GS8+, not my Pixel XL and not even my HTC U11. This phone has character and personality. Most of the other phones don't. This is what counts to me.

Because the placement is so unique and a major US carrier put some deal with Sony to sell smartphones in the US for the cost of the lack of Fingerprint Scanner. Idk why is it a big deal though. Installing a different region ROM will enable it, or just importing theirs from another country. But no software trick can fix the weirdly placed fingerprint scanner and the memory lottery, as well as the inferior version of the phone that costs the same as the superior version in other countries.

Shame some of the software is still backwards and outdated. Looks like the software load has been ripped straight from the Xperia X & Z5 series, which I own the latter. The camera app on the XZ looks identical to the one on the Z5 which is a shame since it's pretty dated. Also Sony are pretty slow with rolling out updates, I only just got 7.1.1 on my Australian region Z5, so I presume the update situation will be very similar on the XZ in the future. Still though, the hardware is gorgeous as always, Sony know how to make a great looking phone with amazing build quality. Great review Michael.

Don't buy Sony phones is my advice. The build quality is the worst. That glass cover glue will peel off if exposed to above average levels of heat. Sony UI is very dull and has no soul. Only reason you would get this is for that slow mo camera, is it really worth it

Donaldo I can guess you used z3 which had hardware malfunctioning but just remember you will comeback to sony the day you use any other non google amdroid for more than 6,7 months and thats where you find lag on any other brand than sony

The UI being "souless" seriously sounds like an insignificant criticism. Normally I don't like having to use 3rd part launchers, but in this case that really is a simple solution, since the phone isn't terribly bloated and the parts that would stick through look fine. It's a complete nonfactor Don't get me wrong, this is a niche product, but for people who really want 900+FPS video, or a 4k display for that matter, this could suit them nicely

ibrar Adil It is quick yes but other than that the experience was awful. The glass catches fingerprints and becomes oily. and the other thing is Sony phones are the most difficult to customize and to put a custom rom on. Almost gave up trying to put twrp on the z3

Don't listen to this man. He's is probably one of the people who haled old touchwiz as featureful, while every other android manufacturer was slimming down their software skins. Sony's UX design is stock android, but with useful additions which vanilla android is yet to include. I've never heard a single case of heat ever causing a Xperia flagship to break apart and unless he can provide some evidence, I can only assume he has some personal issue which makes him want to damage the reputation of Sony. Also, 'glass cover glue' LMAO, don't insult our intelligence with such a bad bait.

Sony is focusing too much on gimmicks. A 4K display that is actually 1080p 99% of the time with poor contrast ratio and brightness? A 19 MP shooter that manages to be less detailed than 12 MP on S8 and Pixel? A slow mo feature that works for only 3 seconds in atrocious video quality? Yea, I think Sony is just interested in making the phone marketable rather than making an actually good phone.

Buy the US version, download FlashTool, and flash an overseas firmware - fingerprint scanner enabled, and because they are official firmwares, no impact to warranty. I've done that with the Z5 Compact, the X, and the X Compact - I like the CE1 (Central Europe) firmwares because they use the LTE symbol in the notification bar instead of UK's 4G. The only thing is, having a US warranty isn't much advantage - Sony's turnaround time is about two weeks, and they often don't get the repair right on the first try.

Hey MrMobile! I've recently made the jump from Apple to Sony after watching your "Alternative phones to iPhone" vid. I'm watching right now on my Xperia XZ1 and I can't get enough of this phone! IMHO, it's one of the more underrated phone of 2017. I hope you do a review of the phone soon, as it also deserves a video separate from its premium cousin. Cheers!

I would probably get that phone if it weren't so fugly! Sony really needs to work on their design. The Xperia arc is what lured me away from the iPhone 4. Sony really had design on lock 5 or 6 years ago...

I have this phone for 2 weeks now... US version.. I absolutely love it.... Camera 4k HDR at 60 FPS video... I was at a nightclub.. It's amazing....and Day time panoramic pic mode... Just wow... Speakers could be lauder but not that big of a deal...4gb of ram... It's freaking fast.... Biggest con... Battery life... Quick charge is good... But... Battery could be much better... Overall I recommend this phone....

It has eis / steady shot stabilization with intelligence mode but not iOS...but see the 5 axis stabilization which works as secondary camera and ois both You need knowledge for each and every technologies used by Sony !

I have this phone and I love it display and camara but I have some Draw backs I don't know if it's just mind or what but the design isn't consistent on mine I can feel one side rail and not the other one side is sharp other not. And that the phone makes creaking noses propz being picky but does anyone else have this problem!!???

This is the first XPERIA since the Z3 that I've been interested in. Still somewhat annoyed that it has some weird stuff that previous XPERIAs had like an iffy Superior Auto mode (that really isn't "Superior") but it seems to be a better overall package than previous phones. As for the OIS discussion, I have a feeling that many of those issues come down to the Superior Auto mode. If you go to Manual Mode, even with everything set to Auto, it seems to be cleaner. I don't know why and how this is a thing, though. It's weird.

That intro was the best i have heard And what to say, this phone is by far the fastest phone this year with snapdragon 835. That slomo, 4k screen are crazy. Watching this on Xperia XZ. Thank you for not ignoring it like other reviewers. Subscribed☺️

The most powerful handset right now (Galaxy Note 8 & LG V30 may change all that when they both launch)... Processing speed is a tad faster than the HTC U11, which comes in at a close second...However, major deal breakers are the absence of the power button-based fingerprint sensor on US variants, as well as some camera software issues with low light and lack of OIS...Best handset for wstching movies and making slow-mo videos though, if that's what you're into...

I really love Sony's Xperia line. However.... I don't know if the screen problem is ever going to be fixed. My Z2 magically cracked from falling LITERALLY 10 inches from my chair on to carpet. Sony would do nothing about it. So then I picked up an M4 Aqua as a temp phone... Same thing eventually. Except it didn't have to fall, it just had to stand lay there. But it is hilarious, the m4 Aqua took more punishment than any other phone I've owned(speaking of water). It apparently dropped out of my pocket one night while going back into the house.. It was raining fairly hard, too. Well.. I see it the next morning.... Still works. Nothing wrong, no distortion, or anything of the likes from speakers, nothing. I've only had water damage once before and it was on an iPhone 6; and that was literally a few droplets, but still killed the screen. I don't know why an Aqua is performing better than any other phone I had owned for less than half of the cost.

Light Reading had a chance to view this phone at MWC. Although no one was allowed to go "hands on" the slow-motion camera was a big selling point. Like any Sony product - a very media-centric phone design.
