People underestimate how important it is to have a camera that just works when you need it to. I haven’t had many issues with my A7IV, but it has overheated on me before in the middle of an important take. There is nothing more embarrassing than being on set and having your camera overheat. That anxiety almost made me sell the A7IV. But the FX30 you can just rely on. I’m sure most people this doesn’t matter to, but it’s no fun shooting with a camera you can’t trust.

Almost two weeks ago I had the chance to rent the FX30 to try it out. I admit I had to get used to the flip out LCD screen. If Sony ever decides to release an FX40 with the same screen construction as the A7RV has, that is my ultimate camera. The crop of the FX30 is perfect. Together with my 12-24 and 24-105 we made some beautiful footage of my daughters horseback video on the beach. It gives you more millimeters to work with. The video is on my channel. I used a GoPro Hero 11 on her chest, the FX30 on the beach and a Mavic Air 2S. Working with LOG footage takes some time and experience. I hope I can make another run with the FX30 before buying one.

I would say that it depends on what you're doing. If you're doing even semi-pro work, the FX30 is what you need; it's got Venice DNA in it. I'm still trying to figure out what niche you'd use the ZV-E1 for. It's got the bigger sensor in it, but is that really necessary for a vlogger's camera? And to me it makes no sense that Sony didn't consider some way to mitigate the overheating issues that accompany a larger sensor in a smaller body. I would definitely get the FX30, even if it's got a smaller sensor than the ZV.

For sure the FX30. If you do documentary or ENG the FX30 audio handle should be emphasised. With smallrig cold shoe add ons to the handle you can easily mount wireless mic receivers on the handle. Can’t do that on the XLR adapter for the ZVE1.

Another great video, enjoying your content Terry. I’m still in limbo about which one. I shoot real estate videos, so the professional quality of the FX30 really appeals, but the full frame, low light performance of the ZV E1 is very enticing. I take a lot of short shots ranging from 5-20 seconds, so over heating shouldn’t be an issue for me, so I’m leaving towards the ZV E1. I see from previous videos you’ve shot some real estate. What you go for in this instance? Thanks

I have the FX30 and have the ZV-E1 on order. For me they are very different cameras for different purposes. The FX-30 for me is my "serious" work camera and the ZV-E1 is my personal take with me anywhere camera. I can't justify the FX-3 or the A7siii so for me these two cameras fit my needs.

You could literally get both the fx30 and zv-e1 for the price of either the fx3 or a7s3. This is coming from someone who's had a hard on for the a7s3 for the last year or so. I now realize that I don't need it for my current purposes but will either eventually get one once it becomes necessary or get whatever upgrade comes out in the near future.

Totally agree with you. FX 30 has more professional features. I can’t imagine myself running a wedding in summer with the zv e1 it probably get hot in 15 minutes in 4K at 24fps and I try my FX 30 few days ago in 4K at 120 and 60 fps and it never got hot.

The conflict for me is the Fx30 or the LUMIX S5iix… I already have pretty good glass for the apc c-mount system. Both with fans, one more cinema based, and the other a true hybrid. The pain is real… you’re never just dropping the $2k for the camera, there’s always more to buy. 😢 Either way it’s about to go down and my stack is about about to get $3-4k lighter. I’m probably going to get the S5iix for no other reason is I’m going to start photography classes and I really need what the fx30 doesn’t have which is a view finder

Great video! I already own the ZV-e10 and it made sense to get the FX30 because I already own crop lenses. No doubt the ZVE1 has amazing new features, however the killer for me is the overheating. The FX30 is so reliable for longer takes like yiu said, and it gives you that peace of mind.

The ZVE1 and FX30 are in the same top rank in video focus camera in their brackets. Its just up to what kind of field you are in. FX30 focuses more on cinema field.

Thanks, Terry - very useful. I do 1 to 2 hrs webinar live each week so I will go with the FX30 due to the better cooling, custom buttons, tally lights and more rugged body - (I travel a lot). And the full size HDMI matters to me also. This is a quality review !

PERCEIVED / ANGLE OF VIEW 🤓 Your one of the few who realize that the format of a camera sensor, Doesn't Change The Focal Length Of The Lens! Only The Captured Angle of View Changes! One may Perceive a 35mm on an APSC as a 50mm(ish) lens, but that doesn't make the optics of that lens change.

Definitely FX30 is the camera to go for. It’s an actual pro class body with the reliability you need. Now also has DCI4K, anamorphic desqueeze and file organisation like the Venice.

PS I’m shooting with the FX3 which I love. Thinking about B cam. The ZVE1 of course has the same sensor and would match my FX3, but no, my choice would be the FX30 all day. I’d like my B cam to be just as pro as the FX3 and the 30 fits the bill.

I think these AI "tricks" are the future. I wish the E1 came with all the tricks (which will become standard in all mirrorless cameras to be more competitive with smartphones) in a more professional package. Would love to see all this combined with an FX6. Imagine how powerful it would be with built in ND filters?

I still think it's a lot of gimmicks in the ZV-E1, but that sensor....chefs kiss But give me the FX30 with product showcase. I think if the ZV-E1 had better thermals and could handle APS-C lenses, I would consider it. Still holding out for a new APS-C hybrid

Real talk, the newest camera is going to have hundreds of videos creating many views for creators. But most creators 2nd or 3rd video about this camera is some type of justification for why people should consider it. If you had a relative that had $2500 to spend on a video centric camera and lens. No. A7iv better value, imo. For me, a pro shooter/a7siii owner, I love what they stuffed into this body. I can overlook everything aside from the overheating.

FX30 is the answer and it isn't even close. ZV-E1 makes zero sense to me. it is full frame... that is the one advantage it has over FX30, if you even really consider that as an advantage with everything else thats BETTER youre going to get with the FX30

@@ChristianElia Maybe it's not close for you. But that rolling shutter performance (major diff) 4k120 slight crop (another major diff when updated), better low light and dynamic range....these are things that are very important for certain creators.

@@AnimeWill i hear you. however i think rolling shutter is presented as a much bigger issue than it actually is for most people. i built my entire career on a sony a6500. shot weddings, sports, corporate and everything else with it and it was never a huge issue. we are a bit spoiled today when it comes to cameras. i’d happily trade the rolling shutter performance for no overheating and a more well thought out body design. the low light is great, but not worth the price to me. FX30 is still very good in low light and so is the A7 IV. i’m not willing to recommend a plastic body with no pro features other than the sensor that’s $2200 to someone looking to create serious content. to each their own though!

Something I want to know is how it is the weather sealing of ZV-E1? It's kind of important for me, because I shoot primarily outside and if the weather is bad, and if my camera doesn't have good weather sealing, then it's not for me.

great video bro. the FX30 is the clear answer here. other than not being full frame, it is a better camera in every way. and the fact that is APSC isn't even a negative it can honestly be better as a B cam for that reason. it can accomplish different things. professional and better ergonomics, dual card slots, full HDMI, better build and grip... and MUCH CHEAPER! it isn't even close. just released my own video about this same question!

I wish someone would cover the ZV-e1 in a fixed install - powered by dummy battery,, recording externally. I'm running a.ZV-e10 with HDMI into a Blackmagic hyper deck for recording- I can record all day with no overheating. I think it'll be fine, less pixels than E10, bigger body, but it's a different sensor so maybe runs hotter?

​@@AnimeWill Thanks for the response, I only find reference to Gerald recording externally, no mention of a dummy battery. The battery (using or charging) can be a big source of heat, so replacing that with a dummy battery can make a big difference to runtime. I know it's not a super common use case but it's allowed my ZV-E10 to run continuously for many hours (longer than a full 8 hour working day)

Hi Terry, Always keeping it real. Appreciate it and thanks for the objective view on comparison between both cams. I shoot both Canon R5 and Sony A9/A74/A7S3. Having a lot of experience with overheating on R5, my workarounds were: - for short form less than 30min), it shouldn’t have an issue. - for long form (longer than 30min-1hr+), I use external recorder like Ninja 5/5+ and you cover overheating and low res LCD. For those who don’t have one, it’s more cost but for me, I already have a couple The ZV-E1 is starting to become more enticing. Otherwise wait for these to trickle to the top end cams (through firmware update, not hoping or waiting, or newer models)

I don’t know. If I would have to worry about camera shut down because of heat that’s just a no go. It’s enough keeping track of other things. If you only filming yourself not wasting somebody’s time, yeah maybe. But for paid work I would never ever ever recommend a camera that may overheat over one that doesn’t. That’s WAY more important than sensor size. Even a 1-inch sensor camera that doesn’t overheat would be superior to a FF camera that does.

All of the features in the world do not change the fact, that the EV1 shuts down due to overheating. End of story. Why should you buy this camera, if it shuts down due to overheat? 😄 If you live the Antarctic or cold regions, then go for the EV1.

What's Amazing is that Sony can actually everyonce in a while make a camera which has the filmmaker in mind. I love the the zv-e1. Has only overheated once during a 2 hour shoot at 4k/30, but then again it was like a 100 degrees fahrenheit out. The low light performance is nuts, and it works great on a c stand being so light.

I think in some ways also a hobbyist should go for the FX30. It’s just a much more solid camera that will inspire more and give more pride of ownership. That body on the FX30 feels such incredibly good and is the total opposite of plastic consumerist gadget like ZVE1. I mean the FX3/FX30 body has kind of like a Leica like build quality. That stuff matters

As someone who shoots video professionally for a living. I bough the fx30 and I use full frame glass on it except for one lens. I also own the A7IV and I primarily use the fx30 because of one reason. The A7IV has overheated on me….in the middle of an important take. As you said, the fx3 and a7siii didn’t make sense investment wise for me when I needed 2 bodies to have a backup. So have a camera like the fx30 that you can trust will work every time, is incredible. The zve1 seems like an awesome camera and I’m sure the overheating may be overhyped a bit, but the best camera is one that works when you need it to.

I shoot professionally with the FX30 and all I’ve got to say is: DO NOT BUY THE ZVE1 if you work with the camera. You dont know what you’re talking about if you’d risk camera shut down. Not to mention that fragile plastic body. I would choose the FX30 all day everyday over the ZVE1. It’s not even close. People get seduced by the ZVE1 being newer and that ff sensor, but the FX30 is so much better it isn’t even funny. If you have full frame lenses it’s a total non issue. Just move the camera a little bit.
