Don't be sad about the 80% and 20%. On my main channel it's the same. However, I'm VERY content with that. The reason why is because that means that KZbin is rolling out your videos to new viewers. Which basically means you're getting a broader range of audience. Once some of those subscribe, you'll see the numbers fluctuate again. It's normal. I'd be pretty sad if it was 80% subscribed and 20% not subscribed. That would mean I'd have a very loyal fanbase, but I wouldn't reach new audiences.

Another suggestion for an AF ultra-wide on the A7C - the Batis 18mm f2.8 is very light and gives great image quality. I love that lens.

Great in-depth video breakdown Gordon. I was stuck between the A7C and the A7iii. I am now leaning towards an a7iii as this will be my first "real" camera. Venturing beyond just an interest in photography/videography to a daily passion. With the a7iii being on sale, I believe it is a better option to get that and a decent lens vs the more expensive a7c. Maybe even use that $300 difference and pickup a ZV1 as well for vlogging and product reviews. Love that product review function that is missing on the more expensive cameras. Hi I love your channel and it has helped me a lot. I have sold my old Sony a7 II because it was too big and heavy and afterwards I bought the Sony a7C because it is reasonably small and light and above all more discreet. Actually the Sony a7C beyond the same sensor has very few similarities with the Sony a7III. Some differences are very obvious like the single memory card slot and some others are not and require to study the official Sony 600 pages PDF guide. The less obvious difference are: The first curtain of the shutter is only electronic instead of optionally mechanical, the maximum sync speed is 1/160th sec instead of 1/250th sec, the maximum shutter speed is 1/4000th, instead of 1/8000th sec, no optional battery grip since the battery door can't be removed at all, the viewfinder magnification is 0.59x instead of 0.78X, no infrared remote control with many functions, four screws on the flange mount instead of six, the screen can't be viewed with polarized sunglasses, no Multi Frame Noice Reduction mode, no Panorama mode, no selective scene mode. I am an old Minolta a-mount amateur photographers since the late 80's and I have some a-mount lenses. The a7C was launched after the introduction of LA-EA5 new a-mount to e-mount adapter without the pellicle mirror for screw driven lenses and after the a6600, a7R IV which full support it, the a7C should be full compatible as a younger camera but it isn't. That made me very sad.

Hi Gordon. Love the videos and reviews. I recently vlogged a walk of the South Downs Way using the Olympus Em1 MkIII with the Olympus 9-18 lens. In my opinion this is the best set up for vloggers on the move who want to travel light. The stabilisation is incredible, it's robust and light (the E-M5 Mark III plastic casing is not up to it - I had one before). It also has CDAF. I don't know why no-one apart from Camera Conspiracies is talking about this camera for vlogging.

ZV-1 is 35mm equiv. 25.38-69.39mm f4.56-7.56, which is better than many larger cameras with kits lens that cost more than 2x as much.

I use mine with the M2 gimbal and the FE 28 F2. It works fine. Payload max on M2 is 720g. The A7c is like 520g by itself. So 200g is your lens budget.

Thanks for including the GoPro. I do think vloggers over think it. But I would love to see the Sony Zed against an iPhone 11 Pro or 12 Pro. Too many pro videographers dismiss the camera in their pocket. In my ( non-pro) experience, the recent iPhone video performance is spectacular. Please do such a comparison.

I thought I was crazy! I am going from ZV-1 to A7C and couldn't figure out why I can't get the camera to focus on things very close with the kit lens. Is another lens better for shooting close up? I guess I could continue to use my ZV-1 for those shots but wow that was a huge change for me to not be able to shoot close up after doing it for months on the ZV-1. Thanks for the review!

Very useful and exhaustive video about stabilization on those two cameras! That Samyang lens is on my list... And they have similarly small primes at various focal lengths. And I would never bother picking up the A7C's kit zoom. I'll be all set with a smallish 18mm and ~50mm prime.

I swapped from Lumix to A7c for the autofocus. It really makes a tremendous difference in my use case; gimbal work with eye track. Also get much better low light compared to my GX85 and G9 pair. But the stabilization on the A7c might as well not be there haha. After being spoiled by the god tier lumix stabilization, it almost feels like the A7c doesn't even have it. But hey, sacrifices, and I love the camera.

These are two very interesting cameras, that was a killer idea to compare them. The ZV1 does a great job for a 1 inch sensor. FF is better of course, but is it enough of a leap for the price/weight? Especially in this case if you have to buy a better lens. Your point about the GoPro is also a really good one. I don't do vlogging but it does occur to me that depth of field is a better, why would you want bokeh when vlogging outside? But the ZV1 is a good compromise. Or maybe the Olympus E-M5 III would be an interesting option? Although that would need a particular lens. Anyway, no worries on the subscribe button, I pressed that years back. Keep these videos coming :-)

Nice review man. I am looking at the A7C as a b cam to go with the A7iii. I did not consider the ZV1. I do have a question though when I saw your comparison at 17:06 I was a little shocked by the small difference in bokeh granted this is the kit lens. I realized where both cameras where set however and the ZV-1 is 35mm equivalent (assuming a 2.7-3.0 crop factor) of f/ 7.56-8.4 and 189-210mm. I don't think the focal length would work in my normal indoor setting because of this. Just curious how far away is the ZV-1 from the Christmas lights?

good review. the zv1 is brilliant. i'm weird. i want one to film the world, not me. mostly because there is no quality video on a camera that fits in your coat pocket...except this one. slightly bigger than a smartphone, but pocketable, it goes everywhere. and the video quality is far superior to any smartphone, even the I 12. but thanks for the comparison. i've seen that Brighton scene so many times now for so many cameras..LOL. how about going inland for a change on the next one. I think I'd rather see A7C vs A6600. I already have the A7III and A7SIII. I'm thinking about selling my A7III and buying the A7C. Today they just lowered the price of the A7III $300 USD. The A7III is now cheaper than the A7C. I'd like the smaller size for gimbal use and and I like the flippy screen.

I did think about doing the A6600, but the core quality and features are actually very similar. I wanted to show how a much cheaper, fixed lens model with a much smaller sensor compared, as well as showing how its extra features like Active IS and product showcase can make a big difference.

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm looking at getting the A7c, and after a lens recommendation to get around the minimum focusing distance issue you discussed. I film a lot of close up detail work. What lens would work best for that?

Depends how close, Dedicated macro lenses get really close, like filling the frame with something as little as 3.5cm wide. But for general product shots, you can get away with something else. I'd suggest looking at the specs of the sony lenses on their website for the minimum focusing distances and compare those vs the prices as there's a lot of choice.

Lessons from the stabilization section: (1) Panasonic G85 was way better years ago than either Sony is today. Pity about the crippled AF. (2) When shooting with a Sony, use a gimbal.

Sony’s IBIS, is as good as Panasonic’s autofocus. Getting my a7c this week, but if my results are similar to these, I’ll have to return it. catalyst sounds great, but it’s unusable if you want full creative control (slower shutter speeds).

I saw that KZbinr Stephen J Reid did some tiny deadcats instead of the media mod on the GoPro 9 and it seemed to work well. What do you think about this solution instead of the spendy media mod?

Well it depends if you're happy with using a built-in mic or not. I'd use the media mod NOT for the extra mic, but for the mic input which would let you connect a far better mic, or a lapel / lav mic.

Glad to say that after this incredible I’ve finally done it ✅ I was really interested in that A7C but was a bit skeptical because of the price and somehow limited features, like no 4K 60 or even 4K 30 is cropped?? So I was then thinking about that ZV1, which looks really appealing apart from that FOV. Finally, I was even considering to just upgrade my iPhone to the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. Since it has incredible videos capabilities and sorta good photo quality. In the end, I’m still confused 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for your videos anyways!

What about cameras that are too old for the gyro info to work for Catalyst stabilization? Can the garbage OIS on a Sony A7II be fixed to a comparable level with a gimbal like a DJI Ronin SC?

A decent gimbal will out-perform any IBIS or optical IS system, so yep, it'd work well with your A7 II. I'd suggest turning OFF your optical IS when using a gimbal.

I really consider to upgrade my video setting. Currently I use my iPhone 6s which is not bad for me in shiny conditions. But the quality don’t worth the work of video editing. On the other hand, I won’t upgrade my iPhone and additional appreciate a bigger censor for more dynamic in light. Years ago I started photography with a old camera with analog aperture and focus. Even the light meter was a separate device. Therefore I tend to a professional camera. Anyway, the price for a “professional” camera is to much. Rather I wouldn’t see the advantage for my easy video content. So I am really close to order the Sony ZV-1 Okay, maybe I can also buy a cheap full censor camera body and keep the Lenses by further upgrades. But it is still more money and a bigger camera. Not easy at all, but the Sony ZV-1 seems to be the best choice for me.

G-master (12:26) looks much better than (Samyang) 12:35 to me. Sharper an nicer colors. Seems like a waste using Samyang for a camera this great. Is the Sony 1.8 20 doing better than the Samyang?

The Sony 20mm f1.8 is an excellent lens, so yes I expect it to outperform the Samyang.

I also got a question you might be able to help with. All videos talking about quality of video in low light, always show tests in urban areas, but I need a good camera for video, low light camping, no light polution what so ever, if lucky only a moon shining down. Budget is not for the Sony A7C, I prefer something close to 1000 dollars, compact. What camera would you suggest? I use Insta360 one X 2 and Gopro Hero 7 because bulk and weight is part of the equation. The ZV-1 has caught my eye, but can not find any information about how it would handle the job camping.

Sensational review Gordon, simply the best I've found on KZbin. It's all about the money in the end, but pound for pound, it's clear the ZV1 is an excellent performer at this price point. I guess the more serious Video creator, will buy the existing A7 bodies, or this A7C (and a completely different lens) But this ZV1 is compelling/almost complete package, with few compromises. I currently use an OSMO Action, and despite it being and excellent tool, it does come with certain limitations, and I do find this ZV1 an interesting prospect to upgrade to. It would be good if you could make a comparison video like this one for the Nikon Z30 and the Sony SV-E10. I think that it would be the most obvious comparison. Adding a Canon APS-C body in the mix would be good too.

Nice one! Subscribed awhile ago! Question: While the A7c’s viewfinder doesn’t seem to compare to the A7iii’s... how does it hold up against the A6300 / A6400 line? Aside from the slight resolution differences on some of the APSC bodies, is the magnification experience about the same on the A7C? Or is it still worse than those smaller sensor cameras?

The viewfinder image magnification on the A6300, A6400, A6600 is much larger than the A7C.

Can anyone advise me as to whether Godox flashes work OK with the Sony A7 C camera. I am about to order the camera and have seen some reports of compatibility issues. As I only own Godox flashes it is important any camera I get works with Godox. Even if the flashes will work limited to manual shutter I can live with that but I can't find a definitive answer. Anyone out there using a Sony A7 C with Godox flashes who can offer advice? Thanks.

I wish Sony was bundling their often overlooked 28mm f2 prime lens with the A7C, instead of this new (and slow) kit-lens. I suppose most customers expect a zoom range in a digital camera, but I think the 28mm is just as compact, and compliments the A7C's video strengths much more effectively!
