Most likely digital audio processing. A lot of people think that running audio and video through a filter will magically fix and modernize older video and audio, but it obviously doesn't. Sony should definitely know better.

Really everyone on the show including the characters who were recurring or for one episode were great. Jerry is probably the weakest link but surrounded by the level of talent that he was around made him look great

Funny fact is that elain was never part of the cast. His father is a powerful man in media and explicitly asked Jerry to put her in the cast. So they included her and it turnout great. But Id argue that Kramer and George carried the film. George by being miserable related and Kramer by being a "free" soul free of burden.
