Seriously, Sucker Punch was spot on with everything: story, artists, designers, and of course the musicians. What gem of a final game to close one of Sony's finest eras.
@origamifan55154 жыл бұрын
this game is definitely on my "to buy and try" list, but from what I've heard about its detractors, and from what I saw from gameplay, while the game makes an excellent deconstruction of the Bushido, and ultimately shatter the Paragon that Samurai were perceived as, the problem is, the mongols are caricatures of bad guys. the standard mobs attack civilians on sight, and the one fully fledged mongol character, Khotun Khan, is an unrepentant monster. It would have been nice to add moments where the mongols soldiers actually show mercy to the inhabitants of the island (like, say random encounters where mongols soldiers actually help citizens, like, escorting them from town to town or helping one fix his carriage and so on...) or having another major mongol character who would have been depicted in the game as growing more and more disgusted by Khotun Khan's methods (like a certain character I won't mention because spoiler), and eventually turning on him (not in the "I'm with you now, Jin Sakai" sense, in the sense where he actually send messages to his hierarchy back in the mongol empire to tell them about Khotun Khan's exactions), that would have depicted the mongold in a more realistic light rather than making them puppy-strangling machines, imo.
@ReblazeGaming4 жыл бұрын
@@origamifan5515 This is not a realistic game. The mongols did a good job at being enemies to kill. If I wanted to know what the mongols were actually like I'd watch a documentary but I see where you're coming from.

@@origamifan5515 The game portrays the Mongols better than how they generally acted in warfare. Besides, this is a historical fiction. Not historical fact.
@jjuan43823 жыл бұрын
@@origamifan5515 well actually there is a lot of depth with the mongols, like how in one of the camps you liberate theres a grave of a mongol, you can tell by the spear, sheild and helmet. And if you read the records of khotun khan you would know he isnt just ruthless but also intelligent, forgiving, wise and open to new ideas like Jins poison. I get what you mean about the portrayal but the mongols in history were really brutal with those who denied rulership and they killed millions probably stagnating future development of technology for a couple of years.

0:00 is a rendition of the Ghost of Tsushima theme, and it grows in magnitude until around 2:23, where a version of Lord Shimura's theme can be heard, signifying the two sides of the final duel. As the song progresses, it becomes more and more obvious that this is no battle fought out of a need to kill, or out of hatred, but of pure sadness and obligation, either to continue protecting one's people, or to uphold one's virtues and honor. These two individuals, like two sides of the same coin, are too opposite to be able to work together any further, and they both understand this with a grim revelation beginning at Castle Shimura, and concluding and enclosing their struggle in the Sakai cemetery.

I don't think Lord Shimura hated Jin, quite the opposite I would say. However, he held duty and honor above all as that was the way and he had a direct mandate from the Shogunate to execute Jin. In his eyes he had no choice but to do his duty as much as it broke his heart. That is why I chose to kill Shimura, not for Jin's honor but for Shimura. Because it meant a lot to him and him failing in his duty would have greatly dishonored him while dying in honorable combat was honorable. And given the way the culture was back then, he would have likely been ordered to harikiri for failure in his duty to regain his honor anyway even though that is not what happens in the game.
@archivedaccount20004 жыл бұрын
@@Kaous10 yea exactly. Putting ourselves in the context is important. Dying a warrior's death was important to all committed samurai and meant that they would be reincarnated as a higher level being. Though I personally chose to spare, to reflect the ghost leaving the flawed samurai code behind.
@Kaous104 жыл бұрын
@@archivedaccount2000 I can see why people would spare him but I think Jin loved him enough to honor his wish. Jin's honor was already gone so there was no regaining it for him. However, killing Lord Shimura was the selfless act as it wasn't for him but for Lord Shimura. Jin did what he had to do in approaching the mongols to save the most amount of lives I agree, but he really put Lord Shimura in a shitty situation by doing what he did in that society because not only had he broken the code severely, he had made the people lose faith in the chain of command and the Shogunate itself and that wouldn't be allowed to stand. Lord Shimura had put his name and therefore reputation on the line by asking the Shogunate to adopt Jin officially. Then by Jin doing what he did, he unwittingly dragged Lord Shimura's name through the mud with him. He backed Lord Shimura into a corner at that point and Shimura was honor bound to kill him to regain his own honor as the Shogunate saw him as the one who created this problem. Lord Shimura would have never been allowed to be in peace had he failed to kill Jin who had become an enemy of the Shogunate at this point.

Jin's pain was massive, all the sacrifices he had to go through in pursue of the salvation of his homeland, but do not forget that Shimura suffered as well, and not a little: he fought in the name of honor and his legacy, but his legacy has always included Jin, his son who was willingly adopted by him. So seeing Jin following the path of the Ghost, seeing him sacrificing everything for Tsushima although he would be called traitor, not being able to help Jin in any way because as the jito he would have stained forever the tradition of samurai if he dared to follow the Ghost, all this hurt Shimura so much that he lacks every confidence in his last mission, put the tale of the Ghost to an end. In the end Shimura prefers to face Jin in a duel because out of all his options these were the best two: killing Jin in order to maintain the culture of samurai which have always maintained peace, or having an honorable death after a duel with his son, saving Jin. Neither of these are correct and Shimura knew this, he knew that things that he loved would be harmed anyway, was it his son or his country. Shimura infact never wanted to win this final fight, but loosing it meant bringing offense to his and his ancestors' legacy: in the end when he looses he asks for an honorable death to prove if Jin still believed in the samurai, but also to end all that painful conflict he had inside.

As much as I wanted to spare Lord Shimura, I chose to kill him to honor his final wishes. Lord Shimura wanted to die seeing his son honoring the samurai code one last time. The Shogun was already out for Shimura’s blood because he had already failed to kill Jin. Shimura no longer had retainers. He was poised to be replaced by another clan.
@kartikayysola4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And even in the mission where you sneak out of Castle Shimura, you can hear the other samurai talking about how Shimura's failures are starting to add up, and that another clan may have to clean up the mess afterwards. With that context, I just don't see how Shimura gets away scot-free if Jin spares him.
@LazzyVamples4 жыл бұрын
@@kartikayysola Yuna and Jin talk about it after the credits if you spare him and it doesn't seem like anything happened. Also, when you tell Shimura that you won't kill him, he tells Jin that he'll be hunted for the rest of his days for his actions, but he's suppressing a smile while he says it. sparing Lord Shimura is definitely the better ending.
@kartikayysola4 жыл бұрын
@@LazzyVamples "it doesn't seem like anything happened" Yet. I'd be willing to bet they're saving that for a sequel. And he didn't look like he was smiling at all in the spare ending to me. Why would he? He asked for an honorable death and his nephew refuses to grant even that wish. Now he's stuck with having failed to kill Jin TWICE, coupled with the previous defeat at Komoda Beach in the beginning of the game and the fact that it was Jin who ultimately took the Khan's head. With the new samurai clans coming in that owe Shimura absolutely nothing, it's just hard for me to see how he isn't living on borrowed time if he is spared.

This game left a really profound impact on me, especially given my time playing it was the peak of the pandemic. Everything was falling apart in my world, but not on the level of Jins, I got evicted from my childhood home (And I had to bail my very dear family member out financially, and I found out how bad her gambling addiction was) right at the start of Covid and right as soon as I finished unpacking in the new place, I sliced my achillies tendon and couldn't walk for almost six months. Given what I said earlier I was very bitter and isolated, and then this game found its way to me. Whenever I feel like my past is tying me down, I come back to this game and its amazing music to remind me of how Jin Sakai burn a path ahead and endured.

Although we all grew to like Jins Tio through out the game, killing him in the end is painful as fans but in theory it IS the right choice to make. If you choose to not to, his Tio probably goes back to the Shogun without doing what he was set out to do and more than likely he’d feel shamed more than he already had at that point. Jin has no “honor” as the Ghost but as the “son” to his Tio, the feelings are more apparent at that point in the game of what needs to be done.

If you spare Shimura, he's going commit seppuku for being spared by the ghost and return to the Shogun empty handed. I love this games whole concept of Honor and Tradition Vs Guerilla Warfare and dirty tricks. The samurai code has brought order to Tsushima, yet it made them rigid and predictable. The Ghosts tactics were effective but also brutal, savage and inhumane, but so were the mongols. If people look up to the Ghost and lose faith in the samurai, they would question their laws put in place by them and resort to governing themselves which could lead to violent anarchy. Never have I ever seen a game with such an interesting concept.
